Mario Kart 64 was the very first N64 game I played. When I was little, my dad bought some old games on our Wii’s virtual console. He bought games like Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and more. And one of those games was also Mario Kart 64. I have a nostalgic soft spot for Mario Kart 64, but over the years, I’ve heard many people say that Diddy Kong Racing is better. And once I finally got it in October, I could finally say that everyone was right lol. I’m honestly very impressed with how good this game looks compared to Mario Kart 64 despite the two coming out the same year (Except for the Japanese release of Mario Kart 64 releasing a year before Diddy Kong Racing) And how could you mention the tracks in Diddy Kong Racing without mentioning the four extra tracks in Future Fun Land?

To be honest Dave and I had over an hour of dialogue we were very thorough but I cut it down a ton to keep it in a watchable package. As I’m now partner I’m thinking of adding things like Member exclusive videos for people who want to become a member and I can post the entire raw unedited dialogue between him and myself with much more conversation, it’d just be us talking. Just a thought I’m having to add value to that :)

I played Mario Kart 64 as one of my first games, followed by Diddy Kong Racing, and I still thought DKR had a better and more diverse cast. We got all these colorful animals, vs 3 men in a hat, 2 reptiles, an ape, a mushroom, and a princess. But hey, I always liked animal characters more.

I mean I think the cast is great and bright and colorful but as far as characters go Mario and company generally are more popular with the exception of Diddy, Banjo and maybe Conker

So 2 things about the characters in DKR. I remember hearing that the roster minus Diddy Kong was a test by Rare to see who would get their own game. Also even though the game is named after Diddy Timber is actually the main character as the Adventure Mode storyline mentions that the island is Timbers home and after Wizpig invades he calls his friends to help him.

Another great video. I spent hours just messing around in DKR as a kid, Mario Kart was fun too but it was more of a "do a few races then switch to something else" game. I can't imagine what DKR would be like now if they remade it today.

Even that i have not playd dk raceing for a long time i still remember the volcano leve songl i have it go thow my mine now and then and sing and hum it but i never hade mario cart raceing and idk but i loved the mini games in dk raceing tough pick last man standing in the ice pearamid or the coin collection in the Castle

I still play both games and 100% both multiple times and I do in fact prefer MK64. I love the arcade feeling and physics. It doesn’t matter if DKR has an adventure mode and overall more content. It’s how a game feels to play that matters the most. Many prefer DKR for that gameplay feel but for me, it’s MK64.

The racing in DKR is unparalleled... Probably the best Kart racer ever made in my opinion, it has more diversity in mechanics and character styles. Intended driving mechanics, like letting go of A before you hit a zipper, breaking and skidding at the same time for super tight turns, tapping A cause your kart to drive faster then normal... Mario Kart is good but objectively worse to Diddy Kong racing... Especially with the rubberbanding... HOWEVER. Mario Kart 64 battle mode is still the best yet today. Highly competitive, screen peaking is part of the strategy.

I agree with all of these statements. I had to fight with my buddy Dave a bit about the cast because at the time even tho the cast is special with Banjo and Conker you just can’t beat Dk, bowser, Luigi all of those guys. We both knew DKR would win in the end tho as we talked. Variety is KING!

Is it wrong for me to say that Diddy Kong Racing is better than Mario Kart 64 even though I have never played Diddy Kong Racing before?? Like don’t get me wrong, Mario Kart 64 is great, but Diddy Kong Racing really took it up a few levels. I wish I had the opportunity to play this game when I was younger.

This was a good video and I enjoyed both games but in terms of content and music DKR definitely is the best and I agreed this deserves to be on NSO especially since Jet Force gemini got on it recently, Rare back in the N64 days was the best.

@@matthewbuckley7757 dude yes! Tooie and Dk would be great fits and even offer some more multiplayer options! I think Conker would be the definitive rare multiplayer experience though. I hope for that one!

Hot Take: The characters in MK64 look better. Sure they may be 2D. But they look way closer to the cover. Its a trick which also got used in DKC.

I actually love both games. They're both N64 classics as well as childhood favorites of mine. My favorite levels on MK64 are the desert, jungle, and rainbow road. There's a ton of things I love about DKR. You could argue that it completed the birth of the Rare universe. Problem with DKR is that it's much harder than MK64. MK64 was a piece of cake but DKR doesn't let you win that easily

I mostly agree that DKR is superior for similar reasons. In fact, it baffled me somewhat when I did a Top Games collab with a variety of people and...MK64 won, mostly based on nostalgia alone [it was still fun tho, and I like MK64] One thing I've noticed about items in DKR, tho, is that the balloons are in specific spots and victory can be achieved if you know where they are, in contrast to MK64's essentially random item acquirements that help even a novice get 1st place.

That’s true. I think Dave gave a great point when he said those elements add strategy. It’s pretty cool. If you get good you’re good. But also why I personally prefer MK items because they’re game breaking sometimes. Kind of can go either way depending on what you prefer.

Mario Kart 64 was the game with which I tried the N64 for the first time in my life at a school friend's house. I remember the moment when I first picked up the N64 controller and the feeling of playing with the analog stick and the Z button. It blew my mind. For that reason alone I would have to stick with Mario Kart, but... over time I got to know the N64 catalog and became a true fan of everything Rare did for this console. And as a loyal fan and defender of Rare's gems, my verdict is that DKR is a better overall game than Mario Kart, despite the love I have for this classic.

Idk about DKR tracks being better cause there’s only 5 track themes and a good chunk of them are either a oval or a simple shape track. At least the track quality improved in Mickey’s Speedway USA and added actual difficulty on later cups.

Dang I LOVE the DKR tracks! Sure there are only 5 themes but every track is fun with well placed boosters and secret routes. Plus you even have variety with planes-hover-cars it changes it. I’m a big fan. Mickeys Speedway I need to replay to see those tracks I only remember a handful. MarioKart64 tracks are a mixed bag. Some are top tier and some are pretty meh. If we were talking Mariokart DS or Wii or 8 I’d totally agree but with 64 I don’t think so. But I respect you feel different! Thats what’s cool about this is we can all have different takes!

@@jiggylookback Frantic Finale might bring some flashbacks. Only way i had to make DKR interesting was using TIMETOLOSE in the Magic Codes menu, cause knowing the mechanics makes the whole Adventure mode too easy.

@@apagan0075 ok I could see that. Once you really nail the mechanics it does get easier, but imagine DKR on switch online with others with skill now that would get crazy! Haha I’m still hoping it comes

DKR doesn't lose in any of the categories. My brother got it when it came out, and we didn't touch MK64 ever again afterwards. And I assume you left out multiplayer and other game modes because it would be too one-sided.

I think DKR still loses in terms of characters and cast but wins in everything else. I'm glad you also feel that the multiplayer modes are better in DKR. The amount of times me and my friends played on icicle pyramid is crazy!

@@tomhammond3495 Hm, I honestly don't see the big appeal of the Mario cast. At least back then, they really didn't have much character to them. I did know them all from previous games I had played, but I really never had much of a preference for either of them. And the select screen really doesn't help that any. In MKWii I used to like picking Rosalina, because I liked the idea of that star princess putting on a race suit and driving through the muck. But for DKR I had read the instruction manual and was absolutely in love with Pipsy. She probably wasn't the best character, especially in boss races if memory serves. But I stuck by her. But I think all of the characters just jump off the screen. And yeah, I remember Icicle Pyramid too. I'm not sure if I could pick a favourite, but we also played the fortress one a lot. Where you had to pick up bananas and bring them to your chest.

I find myself repeating this quite a bit because i feel so strongly about it, but Diddy kong racing is without question the far superior game, i find it difficult to find a single thing about MK64 that I prefer and find it difficult to understand the reasoning behind someone prefering it over DKR, I can only assume its from a place of nostalgia over anything else, because there really is no contest between the two. DKR is in my top 3 n64 games of all time, MK64 probably isn't even in my Top 20

More power to you, I still feel the items are better in Mario Kart. More variety. Although I do like the implementation of how you get them and can upgrade in DKR!
