It’s amazing at how different Choco Mountain is from it’s N64 counterpart. You wouldn’t even recognize the original design unless you compare the two and see that the cave didn’t exist in the original version, but also the broken bridge part after it. Out of all the courses brought back from the N64 era, Choco Mountain has been heavily redesigned more then the others and it’s amazing!

I love the new tracks so much, especially the tour originals, it’s so cool that the course changes depending on what lap you’re on! The only gripe I have is the grass/ cliffs. I really wish there was more work done rather than the grass being just textureless green spots on the ground (there are a couple of flowers or bushes but it’s super obvious). Other than that this release is a steal for the $25 price point, I hope they retain this level of detail with their future waves!
@Odyanii
@Odyanii 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, overall I think they actually look pretty nice, and some details (like the brick mural in Coconut Mall on the downward u-turn) are really nice additions. But the greenery is noticeably low quality looking. Which is odd considering how nice plants look in the base game! I don't know how difficult it is to add existing assets to these new tracks, but one would think they could just transplant some of the trees/bushes that already exist in the base game. Coconut Mall could make use of the palm trees from Animal Crossing's track for example. They clearly used some base game assets already with the TV trucks and some of the billboards. Also I don't know if this is an oversight, but for some reason the bushes in Tokyo Blur and Sky Garden have a texture on them, but the ones in Paris Promenade don't?

@jessicastoker8932
@jessicastoker8932 2 жыл бұрын
This probably happened more for balance. The Speed Boost Pads are missing from that area as well, and Mario Kart 8 seems like it's more interested in you Drift Boosting than using pads. The cars driving back and forth would have made it super difficult to Drift Boost, so the Boost Pads were there. Dropping the Boost Pads meant dropping the cars... OR - some weird technical difficulties arose - OR - they just wanted to do it like that. There's tons of reasons why it could have been changed. "It's exciting for the cars to go back and forth and for you to boost through!" "We have the flying part right before this now, so we've already got an exciting thrill ride moment." Who knows. Unless Nintendo were to outright say one way or another, it's just an aesthetic difference. It was a weird change. Or, if you meant the other aesthetic changes - the escalators being changed, the curved drop and raised sections being turned into retro Mario backdrops - then... I would say the escalators being changed was for readability. The other part was just flavor. If you don't like it, that sucks, but yeah... the cars getting downgraded was the most weird. I personally don't know that I'd say downgrade. I'd just say "it's not the same, and I may or may not enjoy how it plays now better than before." Time will tell.

I was so excited for Coconut Mall since it's one of my favorites but when I played it felt didn't feel like coconut mall. The map itself felt so empty and generic for some reason. And what got me the most irritated was the car is at the end of the map they just sat there not moving or anything like that which I thought was really dumb because it's what made the map hard sometimes. Also I don't like how the escalators look I liked it that you had to basically choose which one to go to and just hope that one is the one going up. It was less obvious and then now.
@Robbie_Haruna
@Robbie_Haruna 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who has dumped hundreds of hours into Wii and has this as his favorite course from that game, that's genuinely mostly nostalgia talking. There are less people without Miis padding out the cheering audience, but that never made the map not feel more empty. Literally the appeal of the map was because it was more empty, but with a bunch of different paths to take, a handful of extra characters cheering at some points wouldn't change that. The escalators in the original weren't hard to tell apart, but them being given arrows is probably to make the game more accessible, (and the change to ramps is an obvious improvement because going up a down escalator in Wii was super janky.) Also the cars were never hard to avoid, usually just resulting in free boosts anyway so it's not really accurate to say they made the map hard either. As for why the cars don't move anymore? It's probably a combination of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being more focused on drift boosting (which the cars would get in the way of and the boost pads would make redundant,) and 200cc making them more of a pain.

The tracks look a little better than Tour, but not by much. Coconut mall has lost a lot of it's charm without the miis, shroom ridge did not get much detail added in the conversion from the (as of this point unreleased) tour version to 8, and there is an obvious difference in quality with the DLC compared to the rest of MK8. The lighting engine in 8 is doing a lot of work to at least make these tracks comparable.

Some of the courses like coconut mall are just a little too different to the original texture wise. I mean I don't expect them to use the models from the Wii game (or whichever game the courses are from), but I'd expect then to ATLEAST keep things like the colour schemes and types of patterns on the textures the same. Changing things like billboards is fun, but completely changing colour schemes, patterns, background objects, and even how the actual course gimicks work is kind of a massive buzzkill for me. Sure some extra detail is nice, but completely changing almost everything other than the layout just doesn't do it for me personally. Some of the Tour stages look much nicer though

This set of courses is overall pretty good. I noticed that the main issues regarding texturing has to do with the floral aspects mostly, such as grass, trees, and bushes... which is odd. They have already reused the grass/plant textures in stages, including the original set of DLC courses. Outside of that common criticism, plus no anti-gravity, my only complaint has to do with Coconut Mall. Man did they butcher its ending. No arcs (I miss being able to stand on them : ( ), the glide segment is WAY too short of a gap now, to where you had to go grounded almost as soon as you launch, and the cars are so... lifeless. They did a mostly good job on the others, but man they really shouldnt have brought Coconut Mall back if this was their plan for it the entire time. (Unpopular opinion, I know, but Its not nearly as enjoyable as its past iterations to me)

Hate how Coconut Mall got changed so much aesthetically- in my opinion for the worse. And Sky Garden still feels like a lot of wasted potential vs the previous GBA to MK8 DLC upgrades. Everything else is either way better (all Tour tracks and Choco Mountain), or very similar/subtly better as a track but a tad washed-out (Toad Circuit, Shroom Ridge). Overall satisfied enough with this. I still wish they went for a quality over quantity approach, though. They're definitely still just Tour tracks with mild improvements instead of full MK8 quality upgrades.

The only thing that really confused me was how there is no use of anti-gravity whatsoever despite quite a few opportunities (Choco's boulder hill section, CM's upper floor just before the jump could've been done vertically a la Twisted Mansion, Sky Garden's layout completely changing would have been fine if it had some slight antigravity like SNES Rainbow Road [ ETA: I'm dumb and SRR has no AG lmao], etc), particularly given how Nintendo was very anti-gravity heavy towards the base retros.
