The great Mario Lanza with this beautiful rendition of 'Come Prima'. As a kid (late 50's) this was my very first introduction to Mario Lanza, singing this particular song in this particular film, 'For The First Time'. All these decades later it's still a favorite.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but is it possible that rather than "I was in rapture" that the lyrics are "I was enraptured"? I'm fairly certain that is the lyric. Enraptured meaning to give intense pleasure or joy to.

Lanza preparaba cada canción, cada aria muy concienzudamente. Era un perfeccionista y lo daba todo en escena. Su vox te llegaba a todos los sentidos porque trasmitía entrega a los demás, al público. All rules have exceptions. Not many operatic singers can sing popular songs. Just as popular singers can’t sing opera. But Mario an operatic singer is the exception to this general rule.

There were many great operatic singers who sang very well popular Music. Mario was one but also Eileen Farrell Kiri Te Kanawa José Carreras Jerry Hadley Rise Stevens Paulo Szott Renee Fleming Kelli O Hara Nelson Eddy etc .The tecnique is the same but its the way you sing each song. Listen to Eileen Fareell singing Wagner and also a jazz duet with Louis Armstrong. Its the same singer with the same te níquel but she knew how to.use it in diferent ways as always did Mario Lanza. Of course popular singers cant sing opera and when they did were bad like Michael Bolton.But it was an excepcion when Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson sang the La ci darem lá mano from Mozart opera Don Giovanni. Grayson sang opera on stage after her Hollywood years but Sinatra was a popular singer who had good vocal tecnique and could sing it well.

Es una canción que conozco bien y me encanta y la he escuchado por muchos tenores, el es el que mejor la interpreta a pesar de su pronunciación y con una fuerza maravillosa que te llega al alma. El propio compositor de Granada, el mexicano Agustin Lara estaba admirado de la fuerza de la interpretación de la misma por Lanza. When he asks them what opera music they'd like to hear, one of them asks, 'don't you know anything good?' So why is she enamoured with a character that is primarily an operatic tenor in the first place?? As with most of Mario's films, it's the outstanding singing that stands out, and perhaps the only reason for watching the films.

By the late 1950s, Music centered movies were falling out of favor with moviegoers. A listers like Howard Keel and Gordon McRae suddenly stopped getting movie roles. I think Lanza had an appealing screen charisma about him separate from his fabulous voice. I wish he'd been cast in at least one movie where the plot wasn't built around his singing. Shirley Jones, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin did successfully act in movies where they didn't sing. With his muscular, stocky build, Lanza could easily have been cast as a working class guy.
