Its interesting everyone is saying this was awkward. Maybe its a cultural difference in the way we socialize and joke around. Im Mexican, and I find this completely normal, she is just joking around not being awkward. I have french friends and its very easy to get along with them, but it has been harder with Canadians and Americans for some reason (gives me the impression they can get offended a bit easier or something like that) Are you guys from the USA the ones that find this awkward? I guess it all boils down to Latin vs Anglo-saxon mentalities in this 'entertainment' context. 2:07 This is the absolute worst question you can ask an educated person from outside the US. I usually love Colbert but he made the very american mistake of asking that question as if talking to a child. It is like it's a foreign concept to americans that people from other countries actually know their shit. If we're going into things we *dont understand* about America (referring to the middle part of N-America) 1) what's with the two party system? How is that beneficial? 2) What's with the electoral college? (I know how it functions but it's supposed use eludes me) 3) Why do you have the need to spend so much on your military while your nation's infrastructure is crumbling and your only (self-created) enemies are in the middle east, incapable of mounting an offensive? 4) Oil. That's not a question, but more of a reference to the previous one. Greedy bastard government. 5) Why is is that you think that you are the only country with freedom? Most civilized countries have more not-gun-related freedoms than you do. 6) Why do you call yourself great? The only thing you're great at is having the most guns. Infant death-rate in the US is appalling and education is barely worthy of *not* being called third-world rate. 7) Why is it that you consider yourselves a "world police"? (see point 4 for answer) 8) And finally, what the fuck is up with you considering countries that actually have their shit together as inferior? Why does half the population treat foreigners as if they're still using typewriters and switchboards?( slight reference to point 5) Three questions I was actually asked when I've been in the US (I'm from Iceland) 1: Do you tame polar bears or just let them roam? 2: Do you have actual houses or just snowhouses? 3: Do you have internet there? It's this thing that connects computers together. (When I said "what?" in disbelief the lady went on to explain that computers were like calculators that did more than calculators) What we don't understand about the US is how the hell you can be so obsessed with yourselves while still finding the time to completely fuck up entire parts of the earth. That's the end of my rant. Yes I'm bitter, yes I'm an asshole but one can get fed up.

I've read the comments before I watched the video and I didn't find this interview as awkward as I thought it was gonna be. To me, she seems to be in a state of mind that is: "To thwart my anxiety, I'm gonna impose myself a 'whatever' attitude". To me, this is the reason why she seems a bit tired, or out of it. But overall, I like many things she said, and Stephen Colbert has definitely done a good job: diminishing as much as he could, cultural and language barriers to make it more comfortable for both Marion Cotillard and the native audience -- that is, according to me, a big challenge, and if, as a viewer, we don't take it into account, the 'awkwardness' answer will emerge. I like her more and more, and I really admire Stephen Colbert!

I'm confused though. Where in this interview does she say they were "not awkward". She never says that. If anything she actually eludes to it with her 'sex in front of the audience' analogy.

@timnichols40088 жыл бұрын
***** Stephen was asking if she celebrated Halloween in France, which she replied "you know it comes from Europe" which is honestly a bit of a stretch, it originates from Celtic practices in Ireland that were not really celebrated anywhere else. The Irish brought some of these practices to America, where it got mixed with some Scottish traditions and eventually over time became what we know as Halloween. So why you could argue that Halloween "comes from Ireland," our modern version of Halloween really comes from America, and it was America that popularized it. All this is irrelevant anyway, because the question was "do you celebrate Halloween?" Not "have you heard of Halloween," or "do you know where Halloween comes from?" And she even admits later on that Halloween is not popular in France, so where Halloween originated from was really kind of irrelevant to the question.
@FishoD8 жыл бұрын
In central europe we don't have Halloween, we have Spirits night. We don't go around, prancing in costumes, we go visit our lost loved ones. Instead of making it all about dressing as a slutty nurse and getting drunk, or children salvaging candy, we go visit graves, it's very nostalgic and sad, but also full of loving memories for your lost loved ones. Sooo yeah, almost every single country has their origin about spirit and dead ones. America just commercialized it, forgot the real reason and made it about candy and costumes.

Interesting moment there: I can totally relate to what she said about having a big world - maybe the entire world inside onself. But apparently, talking about such things in public is a no-no in America - even amongst intellectuals like Colbert. What a pity!

Just because Stephen looks sophisticated and isn't a complete airhead like Jimmy Fallon, doesn't mean he's an intellectual.
@taxiuniversum9168 жыл бұрын
Niamh , +Dove Night, +Benuryu: Yes, I consider Colbert as an intellectual - and I am surprised you take offense at that! Colbert delivers his oftentimes extremely witty social criticism disguised as jokes and "light-hearted sillyness", but to anyone not asleep behind the wheel it is obvious that the underlying motivation is serious concern. Who says intellectuals are not allowed to be funny? Who says they are not supposed to also entertain? As a matter of fact, I have since many years had the impression that often in America, the only ones society even TOLERATES to touch on serious issues are people, who's public appearance resembles a clown. Another good example is Michael Moore. There are basically two groups of people in America: Those, who are too clueless, undereducated / with too little practice in logical and rational thinking. Those folks are basically "disabled" in grasping complex issues. And the the second group: Those, who are witty, informed, aware enough to "get it". But even amongst this second group (Colbert clearly is a part of), many regularly pretend to be so much dumber than they actually are - which is PRECISELY what Colbert did here! And this really gets on my nerves and frustrates me. Why dod they do it? Do they not wanna "lose" the "idiots", who could not follow such concepts? Or are they embarrassed about their own potential to think deeper?
