She was up against 4 living legends, & she was the "baby" of the group. Since then she's become a legend in her own right. Comedy is often harder than drama, & Tomei can do both...sometimes in the same scene!

@@tombryan1 In retrospect, Marisa was the rightful winner. Judy was very good though still quite stilted, but the other three (especially Plowright) were doing their typical British grand dame routines. Vanessa was hardly even in her movie. Helena Bonham Carter deserved the nomination more than her. And Miranda Richardson was just being a typical British wife.

@musicaltheatergeek79

*Richard Cleveland* it is very much a supporting role. She's absent for parts of the film whereas Vinny remains the central focus throughout. Thus, he is the main character. Not every film has a male/female lead; sometimes a movie has just one lead. Some people consider Mona Lisa the 'female lead' in this movie because she is the female character with the most screen time and significance. But the movie is very Vinny-centric. In the end, he wins his case with her SUPPORT. Her entire role in the film is to SUPPORT Vinny in every which way.

I would say she earned it, the cast of Lisa was immaculate. She had the right emotions to the feedback she got, Vinny was sort of stressed out and out of his depths, but Lisa did love him but she wanted a good man that could provide and give her a baby, something she herself wanted in the movie. Sort of self obsessed with a goal, she wanted a man with a steady income (something he could at least do) so she could have children, or maybe just a single child, whatever what Lisa wanted. And she played Lisa like a fucking god. What you notice during the film that there is very little foreshadowing of her acumen into automotives, except like minor things but also told us that she knew what she was talking about, but nothing that gave her away as an expert. She was also 100% human, she was believable very much so, and for that reason i think she absolutely deserved this award!

Maybe a couple of words with the accent, but it actually reflects better acting that she did the movie with an accent that wasn't her natural one and didn't slip up at all.

I used to go clubbing in Bay Ridge in the early 90s. Bentley's was the biggest scene. Marisa Tomei nailed every Italian woman I used to see there, especially the way they went off on their boyfriends. And those outfits were cutting edge at the time. Whoever dressed her was genius.

Мариса заслуженно получила приз. Посмотрел фильм. Конечно, многое зависит от сценария и режиссера, но она сыграла свою роль бесподобно!

Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore were not only fellow Oscar winners but portrayed best friends on the soap opera As the World Turns. Meg Ryan was also on the show right before either of them. Somebody in that show's casting office knew what they were doing.

I remember this win being a huge shock. You had Judy Davis (arguably overdue from A Passage to India), Vanessa Redgrave in a beloved Merchant Ivory film, Joan Plowright (acting royalty and widow of Sir Laurence Olivier) and Miranda Richardson (star turns in Damage, The Crying Game and Enchanted April). All five were great but Marisa Tomei's win was an inspired choice by the Academy. It was cruel for her having to listen to rumours that existed for years that Jack Palance read the wrong name out. She has proven her worth by following up with two more Oscar nominations (In The Bedroom and The Wrestler).

They treated the poor woman like shit. Trying to come on and say she didn't earn it. I was an actor in New York for twenty years and I am here to tell you that comedy, as an art form, is TEN TIMES as hard as drama to get right.

Exactly. The Oscars tend to favor dramas, but it has been claimed by many actors that comedy is harder to pull off. It is easier to make someone cry than it is to make them laugh.

After the La La Land fiasco you could see how it would've been handled had Palance said the wrong name. You could see in this video Palance wasn't disoriented & read from the envelope & not the teleprompter.

It's no surprise that Marisa got the Oscar. She received the most audience reaction when the nominees were being read. It's obvious Jack Palance didn't read the wrong name. He said both her name and title of the motion picture.

Marisa Tomei said recently that those rumors really hurt her. Anyway, it's been confirmed 100 times over that the story was false. She won legitimately.

I disagree. Enchanted April was a brilliant film. But it was Josie Laurence who should have been nominated for best supporting not, Joan Plowright. Marisa should have still won but Josie's performance made a mark.
