Munich 15 March 2019. A Saint-Saens Third Symphony of spectacular power, poetry and valediction, magnificently structured, with very possibly the mightiest sustained ending you'll ever hear - C-major at its most glorious, to be cherished. Likewise watching Jansons reaching for infinity in the slow movement. Jaw dropping.

It is, after all, a symphony that happens to have a pipe organ in it. The music itself is simply magnificent as is this performance of it. Yes, the organ could have been a bit more prominent, but the overall effect of the performance (as well as the sound and video recording of it) is superb. What a joy to hear such beautiful music played at such a high level of expertise.

I'm a regular visitor at classic concerts since decades. When there is one thing I can't stand is this that kind of people who can't wait until the last chord has faded away to begin to clap and/or to call their zealus and hasty "Bravo!" as the first one. Yes, look at me! I’m the real connoisseur!. It’s as they wanted to show that there are the greatest culture people and experts of art. But in my eyes the opposite is the case. People who really love music come to a concert to listen to every note and each nuance of sound and watch the musicians and the conductor performing with all the passion and expression. Speaking for me I try to be concentrated for the entire concert and I soak up every note and gesture inside of me to relish and to save the most amount of details in my memory. And I wished every time at the end the other guests would have the patience to wait until the last tone has died away and makes place for the still. Unfortunately there are really rare moments that this happens. By the way I think a conductor could manage this by a gesture i. e. if he holds the tauteness for few seconds until the quietness sets in. Then relaxing and taking down the arms would be a clear signal that now is reached the end. But I know that’s a case of luck and you can’t always get what you want. The stupids are among us.

Calm down! If live music upsets you so much you should just stay at home and listen to studio recordings. Others commenting here are mourning the passing of a great man. You are just bitching about stuff that, in the grand scheme of things, really doesn't matter. You are indeed among us and if your hobby upsets you so much, you should get another hobby.

I think you should allow that some people are so swept away by the music that they cannot show the discipline to wait the amount of time you would like to begin showing their appreciation. It's entirely possible that they cannot help it.

(Good) music resonates differently on each individual - 'to each his own' - but as long as we show appreciation - earlier or later - the job of the orchestra and its conductor is done - to me this is Maestro Jansons's swansong with the BRSO - an orchestra I greatly respect and appreciate

Why spoil your point with all the hyperbolic nonsense? I agree that audience behaviour can be irritating and occasionally disruptive - we've all wanted to pull a gun (metaphorically) on the moron who claps in the wrong place or coughs loudly during the ppp passage and there are several well-reported instances of conductors stopping performances due to ringing mobile/cell phones - but there is nothing new about it. Listen to a historical live recording (something like Beecham's Sibelius Second from 1954) and you'll hear plenty of coughing and a bit of bravo-ing. It's a fact of life and if you can't live with it you'll need to stop going to concerts and listening to live recordings

@@davebarclay4429It is undeniable not all concert patrons are true blue aficionados or who are sufficiently knowledgeable to savor each performance not only for the music but also the virtuosity of instrument players guided by maestros - that said - Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 3 Movement No 3 ending would catch most unaware similarly Barber's Adagio scripted sudden silence in the middle of his piece - long story short - let us enjoy the music (sic) and let others catch up - my 2 cents

@@cliveso It is indeed. The acoustics of the main auditorium of the Gasteig are notorious, and the acoustics of the hall are actually part of a pipe organ. Klais built a new organ there in 1985, and immediately rebuilt it in 1988 when it sounded unsatisfactory, In 2010 the whole organ was revised again, with little improvement. When he was asked what might improve the sound in the Gasteig, Leonard Bernstein is supposed to have said "Burn it." This is one reason Mariss Jansons was so determined to build a new concert hall in Munich. It looks as though his efforts will have been successful (tentative completion date 2024) -- but the tragedy is that Jansons will never see or hear the results.

This is an astonishing, celestial rendering of the Organ Symphony. I have never listened to Mariss Jansons or the Bavarian Radio Symphony before. What a loss to me! I will rectify it immediately! Their rock-solid unison, effortless ensemble, and jaw-dropping dynamic range bowled me over. And Janson's architectural reading of the Saint Saens revealed so many things I've never noticed before, both small and large, in the music. Thank you to Ms. Apkalna. Of course this is not a vehicle for spotlighting the organist or the organ, and she plays with perhaps more restraint than I would wish. I think that an organist should conduct this piece, and give the organist more rein in registration. Especially at the end, I long for the organ to rise above the orchestra and truly thunder. But that aside, this performance was a spiritual experience for me. Thank you so much to all involved in bringing it to us!!
@dizzyology7514
@dizzyology7514 4 жыл бұрын
I agree on all points, although the fact that the organ sound gets swallowed by the orchestra is probably a limitation of the Klais organ and the acoustics of the hall, rather than any fault on the part of the organist or the conductor. Try listening to Ms. Apkalna's rendition of the Poulenc Music for Organ, Strings and Timpani in Frankfurt. The strings and the conductor in that performance are not in the same league as Jansons and the SOBR, but the timpanist is very good and the Schuke organ sounds wonderful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqSppHWEdtJ2mpI

This is one of the top two I've heard. He doesnt rush the tempos, but makes sure one can hear all the counterpoint and hidden parts well. Nearly every one I have heard is taken way too fast, like the conductor is pandering to the socialites who cant stay very long. Only other I like is the DeWaart with the S Francisco symphony.

Much as I admire Mariss Jansons I admit to finding this a bit slow. Hearing the counterpoint and hidden parts is all very well but not at the expense of momentum. There are a couple of points particularly in the second half of the first movement where it feels as if the whole thing is going to grind to a halt. Personally I think there are better memorials to Maestro Jansons than this performance. The recording by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Berj Zamkochian playing the organ is still my favourite despite being 60 years old

The opening is insipid but the strings resurrect the themes gradually; the second movement needed more spine and the scherzo more bite; where Jansons and Apkalna score is in the organ finale and in particular; the final cadence). My recommendations : {L'ORTF/Jean Martinon - Detroit/Paul Paray - Boston/Charles Munch - Philadelphia/Jeno Ormandy Blau - Los Angeles/Zubin Mehta - Vienna Symphony/Georges Pretre}. Jansons takes seventh place.

@@MrBohuslav Thank you. But César Franck was belgian and, may be also a dutch by his birthplace.
@MrBohuslav
@MrBohuslav 4 жыл бұрын
Franck being Dutch is as absurd as Mahler being Czech. César Franck was born in Belgium (although there was no Belgian state before 1830), but, of course, he is a very important milestone in the story of French music, having lived in Paris since he was 13 and becoming a French citizen in 1870. His D minor Symphony, written in Paris and premiered at the Paris Conservatoire, belongs to the history of the French symphony. Nevertheless, if we are looking for "germanic" French symphonies, some are more germanic than Saint-Saëns' 3rd: Chausson, Dukas, Magnard (3rd) and even perhaps Bizet, Gounod or Saint-Saëns' 2nd (the "germanic" reference being there Mozart or Mendelssohn).
@HamzaBaqoushi
@HamzaBaqoushi 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrBohuslav Well, the French still consider César Franck as belgian may be just to not upset their neighbors, which makes what you said still relevant anyway. As for the _germanism_ (sorry for the term) of the 19th century french symphonies, that's also a common trait to many of them since Berlioz, but what I really meant is, that the Saint-Saëns 3rd has a fine balance between _frenchness_ and _germanism_ , in other words, the _Dies irae_ theme makes it very rooted in catholicism thus very french, while the organ and the fugue bring something from J.S Bach and protestanism to the mix, all without any influence from Wagner during his prime! All these ingredients, in my opinion, make Saint Saëns 3rd the most germanic of all *true* french symphonies. I hope now, you can get what I meant. But let that aside and tell me about *Alois Haba* instead. That's a more important topic to me, if you are willing of course. Alois Haba microinterval system may be useful for us Arabs to write piano and large Orchestra music using our native music system, what do you think?

Couldn't hear the organ bearly. Not a great performance. Heard better.

Jansons did not look well at the end of the performance.

He was exhausted. He had suffered heart problems for many years, including a heart attack which almost killed him in 1996. But he threw himself into his conducting with ferocious intensity, and some of the orchestra members admit that they sometimes prayed for him to survive to the end of a performance. He died less than nine months after this concert.

Yes, clearly exhausted but eminently happy. Maestro loved what he did and shall not be forgotten. So much spectacular music made over a spectacular career......until we meet again!

It is not an organ concerto but a symphony with organ. The composer inscribed it as: Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue" (with organ).

The early bass lines of the organ can hardly be heard. You would think these noisy people would learn to cough into a handkerchief or coat sleeve to they didn't make so much noise. But where is common sense these days. Same place civility and respect. 30:10 no organ??? Same around 34 - cant hear the organ. The title is "Organ Symphony" 36:52 - Where is the organ? 37:00 in the bass notes going down - No Organ - The final chord is all orchestra. This performance, as far as the organ is concerned, is pathetic. Wimp. chicken..... Terrible. Yes, I dislike this video.

Reading this alongside some of your other negative "reviews" of KZbin videos makes me wonder (a) why you bother watching at all and (b) what it would take to make you happy.
