Since it isn't mentioned in the video, for those of you who want to know the finishing time. It was 22.33, a new world record. The meet was held on 16th February 1986.

Not sure how you came to confuse a meeting quite clearly held in the USA to a meeting held in East Germany but you have. This is not 23.33 which was a 200 metre time run on an oversized track, this is 22.89 over 220 yards on February 28th 1986 during the US indoor championships.

it makes me angry that you talk like this about athletes who without any shadow of a doubt have cheated throughout their careers; that the GDR has doped any sporty woman from an early age, and for about three decades, even the walls know it, and that sport should be a hymn to doping, I'm not in! obviously not only did they cheat; in Eastern European countries doping at that time was a common practice, but even the Americans were not immune, and among the established facts such as the positivity of Lewis and De Loach in Seoul, and other very probable ones, Griffith is certainly no exception indeed she, like Obelix, fell into the cauldron and drank all the potion! Today, however, everyone is suspicious, those who arrive ahead and even the last ones, that the culture of doping makes converts even among amateurs, who, in order to win the Sunday race, put their lives at risk, a stupid risk! if this surrogate is the Sport you want, here you are served!

@jakkeday1 Many respected commentators would tell you why they consider Marita to be the greatest sprinter, male or female, of all time. Let me spell it out for you. No matter the era, EVERYONE, is on a level playing field, and yet, over 200m and 400m, Marita was still almost invincible. As far as I'm aware, she only ever lost 1 200m race, the 1979 World Cup in Montreal to Ashford, and 2 400m races, the 1977 World Cup to Szewinska and the 1981 World Cup to Kratochvilova. Just 3 competitive losses over 200 and 400 in 10 years of racing that included relays as well. (As far as I'm aware, she also won every relay over 4x100m and 4x400m that she ever participated in). She broke WR's over 50m, 60, 100m (an indoor WR of 11.11 that still stands today) broke the 200m multiple times, the 400 multiple times and still holds it, both of the relays multiple times and she is still also the unofficial holder of the 300m WR (34.1 made during her 400m WR). Therefore, Marita Koch, is the ONLY athlete, male or female, who has held, or still holds, EVERY regularly run sprint WR. People always talk about drugs etc, but, if it was just a case of drugs, the other GDR athletes would have been next to her as well and doing the 50-400 distances too. But, they weren't good enough to do so. And in all of her events, she still pulverised the rest of the GDR girls as well. Even if everyone in the world was 'clean' they'd have still metaphorically finished miles behind Marita. She is an utterly unique talent, a once in a lifetime athlete. She is more than a legend. She is the unquestionably the greatest sprinter, male or female, of all time. (For comparison, Graf lost more than 3 matches and if memory serves me correctly, she had a losing record against a younger Seles. If Seles hadn't been stabbed then Graf wouldn't have won as many majors as she did. I'm not even going to bother comparing Dreschler to Marita because it is just laughable).

Best runners and swimmers that pharmaceutical science could create. Kornelia Ender, perhaps the greatest woman swimmer of all time, was very outspoken about how their athletes were never told what they were taking, after the Wall came down. And even if they did, they had no choice but to follow the program. Life in the DDR was grim for ordinary people, and sport gave them the opportunity for privileges and to travel to the West. I'm actually surprised that their officials allowed Marita to be interview without one of them being present. But make no mistake, both she and Koch were naturally gifted athletes.

Flo Jo had never beaten Marita Koch over 200m during her lifetime. And the East German was smart enough to retire before dope testing became more stringent. She wouldn't have been able to set all her world records had she been clean. Her staggering 400m world record of 47.60sec set in 1985 still stands after 30 years. And even till today all the world's top 400m runners are struggling to break the 49 seconds barrier, let alone 48 seconds. The only one who came within 1 second of Koch's world mark was Frenchwomen Marie-Jose Perec. But what makes it more ironical was the fact that Koch's coach, Wolfgang Meier was also Perec's coach. Doesn't that ring a bell?? And she juiced her way to two 400m Olympic golds in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 as well as the 200m gold for good measure. She tried to attempt a treble in Sydney 2000 but was forced to widraw at the eleventh hour when news surfaced that she could be tested positive for stanozolol.

It was Florence who retired before random drug testing came in, in 1989. Perec winning time in Atlanta was 48.25, which is 6 tenth behind Koch time. And Perec's withdrawal was not forced, we don't know why she decided not to run. And in all reality who cares. No of the women's running record are clean - none.

Probably true, but if we look at the men, who also took steroids in the 80's, there are only 3 records remaining. The answer isn't just steroids, because there have been plenty of undetectable performance enhancing drugs available since the 90's and yet no one has come very close to those records. There is a talent side to running that I think you are forgetting about.

Thank you for that information! I was looking at the fastest recorded times at 400m and was surprised that there was one time from Perec in the 90's. This explains a lot (regarding having the same coach as Koch). Haha I am fascinated about the womens lap times in 100m 200m 400m and 800m, especially the record holders such as Kratovchilova (spelling) and Marita Koch. Well, it's been 31 years, do you they know if MK beat VBH yet? By the way, my older sister once beat Diane Dixon on that track. It was an 800 though, not a 400 which would've been epic. For some reason when my sister was in 8th grade she could run an 800 faster than most male high school seniors. It was sort of weird that she could do that at 13 years old. @@mattwad9738 You said Koch over Flojo! There are documents outlining the German state sponsored doping program and Marita Koch's drug regimen. Of course we don't have any official evidence but it's highly probable that Flojo doped for about a year. It's the rapid increase in her performances from 1987 to 1988 that suggest this. In this 1986 race, I doubt Flojo was on anything whereas Koch was already benefitting from years of doping. In any case, Flojo had many advantages over Koch & every other woman in the history of the sport as a sprinter. She had the fastest foot strike in recorded history, meaning her foot was in contact with the ground for the least amount of time. Her combination of cadence and stride length, particularly with her lower leg forward motion was unmatched. At her peak no sprinter, male or female, could match her relaxation. If we recognise that the vast majority of female sprinters benefitted from drugs at some point (and even discount the 10.49 which was blatantly wind assisted), Flojo was a marvel!

it makes me angry that you talk like this about athletes who without any shadow of a doubt have cheated throughout their careers; that the GDR has doped any sporty woman from an early age, and for about three decades, even the walls know it, and that sport should be a hymn to doping, I'm not in! obviously not only did they cheat; in Eastern European countries doping at that time was a common practice, but even the Americans were not immune, and among the established facts such as the positivity of Lewis and De Loach in Seoul, and other very probable ones, Griffith is certainly no exception indeed she, like Obelix, fell into the cauldron and drank all the potion! Today, however, everyone is suspicious, those who arrive ahead and even the last ones, that the culture of doping makes converts even among amateurs, who, in order to win the Sunday race, put their lives at risk, a stupid risk! if this surrogate is the Sport you want, here you are served!
