Mariya Filippova - Brahms Rhapsodien op. 79

OMG OMG OMG! This might be the best live performance of the two Rhapsodies together l have ever heard. And l don't say that lightly, because his opus 79 is among my favorite compositions of all time. I so rarely see both of them performed together with such clarity and sense of musical direction. I had a whole list of specific things l was going to praise about the interpretations, but then l remembered how my mother taught her students to play the stacattos in the 2nd theme of the first Rhapsody and then l realized that you already know way more than l do about it, so l cannot add anything. But please, allow me to compliment you on your overall sense of touch and articulation, and how you unfailingly brought the most colorful and and important notes to the fore in every instant of the piece. Bravo!

And may l just add that upon a 2nd listening, l just love how you performed the development section of the B Minor Rhapsody without excess sentimentality but when the melody repeated, you took took care to subtely bring out the alternate melody which is there in the inner voices. I think this is a masterful interpretation, and allowed you to perform the entire opus together with the strongest emotional weight given within the G Minor Rhapsody but still with an enormous but subtle climax presented during the B Minor. Again, absolutely bravo. I don't really have words to describe how this moved me.

A superb and intense interpretation. Maintained the full energy of this piece with some lovely expressive touches. I would just slightly question the left-hand staccati octaves in bars 21 & 22 and bars 106 & 107 (and similar places) in the second rhapsody; they sounded a bit short as they're marked only mezzo-staccato (with a slur over them).
