No one on this thread has any idea what they're talking about. BG and JP were both fighting for Cav's wheel and JP had position (bars in front) of BG the whole time. It was a clean sprint. People seem to think you get assigned a lane at 250m from the line and have to just go straight. That's a misunderstanding of the rules. Not deviating from your line does not mean not fighting for a wheel. Sprinting is about fighting for position and whoever gets it usually wins.

As above, you need to maintain your line but only after you have launched your sprint. Cav launched early, and Phillipsen grabbed his wheel. That's done all the time. Sprinting is a contact sport. Always will be. Girmay got bumped off a wheel. Happens.

Philipsen did nothing wrong. I used to race bikes, u have to hold that wheel or someone will take it from u. Cav went by Bini and a gap opened and philipsen snuck in that gap and then around Cav. That's how sprints go....

I have never raced bikes. A couple of members of my family. I am no expert but have watched almost every TDF for the last 30 years and almost as many Giro's plus Veulta's. It's a thin line but I think philipsen did the wrong thing. Cav done well but may have gone slightly to early. Girmay should of won. He had position and probably legs but he's should of stayed on the wheel more that way philipsen had no reason to cut across.

Everyone out there is trying to win while cranking out 2000 Watts on their bike and fighting to get position and get on a wheel. Picking the right line at the right time is extremely difficult in such chaos. It'd be quite shoddy to relegate him. Philipsen has the ideal leadout train. Everyone else is at a serious disadvantage. We've seen that same scenario over the years. Fast guy plus ideal leadout is almost impossible to beat.

Lmfao they went from 72 km hr to 59 km hr in 3 seconds that’s some hell of brake sets they have. Unless you have absolutely no wind or cross winds you will never reach 59km hr and that still requires a massive train pushing you along, notice they are now enclosing the finishes so they can be helped from the tunnel effect. There is also sped up videos where they are clearly deceitful trying to make them look faster, watch out for the viewers hand movements you can tell if the video is sped up.
