When I was seventeen (in the summer of 1970...), I won a radio contest and got to see the band play The Fillmore East, and afterward I met them all backstage-all great guys: very patient and welcoming to the skinny, sweaty little fan in their midst who stood speechless and gawking at Mark's crazy looking guitar (which was lying on the floor...), and how tall Don was (like 6'4" or something)! If Don & Mel can get their heads outta their butts long enough to bury the hatchet with their old pal Mark (who, btw, IS Grand Funk Railroad...), these guys could easily fill Madison Square Garden for two (maybe three) nights of kick-ass music. My old man, a HUGE GFR fan, got me into their music. These guys kicked some serious ass back in their day. One of the greatest power trios EVER! You can't talk about late '60's or 1970's music with out GFR being a huge part of the scene. As many others have said before me, Mark Farner IS GFR. I'd love the chance to see him at least once before he calls it quits.

Don Brewer what can I say, Mark is the talent and your a fixture of the element. If I see the name Grand Funk I get excited thinking of Mark. He is Grand Funk. I will always see this picture. If there is a venue of a band called Grand Funk it will not be attended by me or anyone I know. This name is now De_Funked. I look forward to a venue that is listed Mark Farner the man who earned his fame.

Paul, as we say back in the day, Right On Brother! Funk is ALL about Farner. Brewer is a hag rider, and parasite leeching off Farner's talent. I like quite a bit of Farner solo too.

Here are the current ages of the original three band members of GFR: Mark Farner (66 years old, 67 on September 29th); Don Brewer (66 years old, 67 on September 3rd); Mel Schacher (63 years old, 64 on April 8th). If Don & Mel wait even five years to reunite with Mark Farner, then I fear it will be too late, because these guys will be mostly in their early 70s by then. So Don & Mel, PLEASE make things right with Mark & give the fans one more reunion tour, before you all pass away. Bravo, Mark Farner!

First off, I am a Farnerite and he is my #1 guitarist, voice, song writer and I truly admire him. According to Marks' book, he demanded getting half of the pay instead of dividing into 1/3's. That doesn't sound too much like he really thinks GFRR is the "3 Amigos" as he says. Also when they were promoting that tour with the three of them he was still boldly talking, in your face style, about his Christian conversion in Grand Funk interviews with Don and Mel, that's what I heard in their Youngstown Ohio interview. I'm a Christian too and I don't know anybody who is converted with "spotlight in your face" preaching to non believers, especially the bandmates sitting next to you in the interview. Mark HAS cooled his turbos in his witnessing and is focusing much more on Love & Forgiveness now. He's much more a "soft glow" now and is, IMHO, a greater force for God. D & M waited 2+ years for Mark to go back and tour with them. He refused. D & M are pricks and I'm disgusted with their refusal to get back together, especially after Jessie got hurt, but Mark did his share of shoving too.

John Doe JD: Farner is Grand Funk, except for We're An American Band, admittedly their biggest single, but Farner wrote 90% of the songs, and all of the best ones, sang them and played guitar. Brewer is nowhere without Farner. Nobody knows his name without Farner, Brewer is a hack musician and a mean spirited dishonest creep. Farner is rightly proud of, and should take ownership of Grand Funk's success.
@JohnDoe-tu7ho10 жыл бұрын
bluegoldspirit I agree with everything you say and Don is a prick. I just wish Mark would have continued as Grand Funk instead of going on his own again walking away from everything. He went solo again because he IS GFRR and kindof thumbed his nose at D & M for 2 +years because he could get away with it. It wasn't until the court judgment against did he want to get back together and then he wanted a 50% take instead of 1/3 as it was previously all the way through GFRR history. What D & M are doing is awful and morally bankrupt, but unfortunately for us all, it's legal and we're stuck with it. My point is that Mark shoved too and D&M did a big time kneejerk reaction.
@jonholcombe10 жыл бұрын
John Doe JD: I would love to see Mark with GFR too. If he demanded 50% take of profits, based on his contribution to the band, that would seem appropriate to me. And, if the story about being deceived by Brewer and blindsided with signing the papers that gave Brewer and Schacher control of the GFR "entity" is true, my sympathies are wholly with Farner. Some may think Farner naive and overly trusting, but his faith in his friend Don Brewer would seem to me to be a truly "Christian" virtue (although I am many years past my association with my Church). Brewer's action were self-serving and diabolical, with the intention of harming the person who in fact gave him his claim to fame. On any level, Brewer is just a sleaze. I listened to the audio clips of "Flint" on Amazon, and my ears hurt.

Yeah the proof of that is their follow up band, Flint, after Mark left GFR, which was just GFR minus Mark, went nowhere. They released one album which was mostly covers and I don't think it even made the charts. If it did, it was just barely. I listened to it a long time ago and remember that it didn't sound too bad, but it was like listening to GFR with something missing. Of course the name of the band didn't help either. I know they thought naming the band after the city GFR and they originated in would be a good idea, but it wasn't. Flint, it sounds like a symphony or a choir or some shit.

GasserGlass ...What did Don and Mel do? Their real problem was Terry Knight their manager..He was ripping them off and when the band found out, they told knight to take a hike. Granted they only had a few months till their contract ran out, but they wanted him gone. So I don't see where Don and Mel were the problem.

Mark Farner's solo output has done no better in terms of commercial success, or lack thereof. You're right about the name FLINT--ugh!! I don't buy this "Mark Farener IS GFR" bullshit. GFR was a great band when they worked together, and unless they all get together again, someone else can have my seat at their shows.
