When we asked Hamill how it felt to revisit Skywalker after all these years, he said he was terrified. Expanding on that, he reminded us of the vitriolic criticism hurled at the prequels, and how he was concerned the new movies could suffer a similar backlash.

Well, I am going to guess it has something to do with the cognitive dissonance that must have arose from Darth Vader being so cute and rambunctious at that age. Maybe they were expecting him to have a more somber character. That's not an unreasonable complaint but they seemed to forget that Jake Lloyd was a real person and Anakin Skywalker is not. Ultimately, it is George's vision but they should have analyzed themselves before dumping criticism on anyone else.

Ahmed Best, the actor who voiced Jar Jar, was pretty crushed too. Of course he was an adult, so it was a different thing. But he was stepping into a loved series and was so excited to be part of something awesome. He had all this positive feedback and was kind of blindsided by HOW harsh the backlash was. He later contemplated committing suicide on a bridge. From the data it does look like a lot of people are in a bad place and "opportunity" arises, and they kind of impulsively go for it. He later went back with his son and thought about what he’d have missed if he had listened to that urge. I think the video that best summed it up and took it seriously was SoulPancake about a year ago. People are so vicious. Hate the character all day long. Think someone is a lousy actor. But they’re PEOPLE and they feel the hate given to them, especially when it’s never ending for years and yelled.

And yeah, kids can be mean and vindictive, but many adults never get past that and can be much worse. "You ruined my childhood" is a sentence I am tired of hearing when it comes to nostalgia. If you had fond memories of something, then those memories shall remain as they always have. It be a bad movie sequel, book, game, whatever it is, I see no reason why it should alter your ability to enjoy what came before. Also, there is something about that sentence that comes off as self centered to me, as though one's childhood is sacred and should come before what could potentially be entertaining to other people. Those are my two cents.

For this I respect George, he doesn't let hate bring him down. When people saw the sequels, they realized how much they had taken the prequels for granted.

I mean you don’t have to be an actor to know bad acting… but it’s not okay to make fun of a kid. People not liking a character after times a sign of a good actor. Plus often it’s the writing, directing, casting director etc. honestly I did not like the character of anakin as a kid. But it wasn’t Jake Lloyd’s fault. They just gave him kind of a full personality and no humor, plus the pod racing was dumb. I mean compare his character to Leah in the Obi Wan show. Yea, Lucas is a shitty script writer for romance scenes, everyone can agree on that, but the prequels are really good movies. PM is lighthearted and yet epic, AotC is just downright badass and sets up the story very well, RotS is honestly amazing in every way. Hayden Christensen nailed his scenes as Anakin in that. I personally love the Galactic City scenes in AotC, and the podrace in PM. Stop being overcritical, world, they're fun and entertaining movies :)

AcidGlow you absolutely right, especially KZbin is a place where a lot of hatred is channeled towards many things, movies, music, video games, politics etc. Some people are lost in nostalgia, a feeling that exaggerates the “good old times” and some are just spoiled shits that go insane when they don’t get their personal will. It’s impossible to satisfy everyone and each taste as each one of us is different and has different expectations but they are our expectations, in other words it’s our problem and we have to learn to get along with ourselves. That’s often the problem with hatred, especially when it comes to fan reactions, and it’s mostly mirrored in fan fiction where people express their personal wishes about how they think things are and have to be. But on the other hand “ it’s just their opinion man”. The only thing that really shocks me and has driven me to almost quit every social media participation permanently is the self justice people commit without taking a look in the mirror and seeing their own flaws. I remember quite vividly how my opinions on the prequel trilogy changed as I grew older. When I first saw them, I really quite liked them, being enamoured with how much fresher and newer everything looked alongside the Clones and genuinely enjoyed them, even going so far as to cheer Jar-Jar on (I was a dumb baby shit at the time, so this was to be expected); but as I was exposed to more of the ire towards the trilogy during my teens, I adopted much of the views I found and I never watched the trilogies again, except for one time when I found the Phantom Menace insufferable (guess why) and Attack of the Clones being an improvement but still awkward and childish, with Revenge of the Sith being the only good one of the bunch. But then I... matured, I guess and didn't care for others opinions on things. I thought maybe I was wrong about the Prequels and softened on them a bit - among other topics, but that's another story - and decided to entertain them again. And while I couldn't say they weren't for kids, they were markedly better than I remember and didn't cringe once. Whilst watching them recently, I'm reminded of a meme quote drawn from a Phantom Menace picture book, being, "I smile at the silly Gungan. Maybe he is not so bad after all."

I'll be honest, the hate for both the sequels, and before that the prequels, is pretty toxic. I personally still prefer the sequels, but I'm tired of arguing with people who don't want to change their stance and just can't find anything they like about the sequels. I'll admit a few good things I like about the prequels, and while I don't think they're good, I can see why people like them. Just don't like the fact that some people turned heads on the prequels for no reason. The fanbase in general has been incredibly toxic since TLJ. It was toxic for a while, but TLJ was the breaking point.

I liked the prequels. I think Hayden played the perfect Anakin. I think the problem was what people EXPECTED Anakin to be. He had to be an emotionally broken mess that was all over the place. Borderline Personality Disorder comes from lacking an identity and Anakin lacked the identity of balance because there was nothing that resembled balance, except for say Qui-Gon, who died. So he substituted the Jedi for balance and the Jedi was NOT balanced. So he felt the pull to balance, but there was nothing representing balance and the only thing in the direction of the pull was the Dark Side, so he resisted until his reasoning for being a Jedi melted away with his distrust of the Jedi. Because there was nothing representing balance, he moved to the Dark Side and immediately felt the pull in the other direction (towards balance) and resisted it again, doubling down on committing to the Dark Side, choosing not to betray his new master. So yeah, Hayden's character being emotionally all over the place was consistent with how Anakin was meant to be portrayed.

@Logic Police I'm well aware of how bad the things cut were. Guess why it was cut! That's how movies are made. It's difficult to see because most movies aren't written about as much as Star Wars is, but movies typically have thousands of terrible ideas that are thrown out. I know Star Wars was saved in the edit, but who looked at the first cut and thought it was horrendous? Lucas. It's not like he was happy with it, but was forced to change it by someone else. He hated it and thought his career was over, fired the editor and hired someone he trusted more (his wife). And the edit didn't change the dialogue. Harrison Ford thought the dialogue was garbage, but it's still his dialogue in the movie.

Obi-Wan, Anakin and Luke are my favourite SW characters, each fantastically complex. I was 10 when TPM came out and around 16 when ROTS came out. Social media was in its infancy back then, e.g. Facebook was only marginally popular at the end of my senior year of high school. I wish others my age and I could've told Ewan and Hayden back then how much we loved ROTS, so that they wouldn't have felt so bad about the critics' words. I'm 33 and still a big SW fan. It's been so long-awaited but immensely satisfying to see Mark return in true Luke form in the Mandalorian*, followed by Ewan and Hayden in the Kenobi series. Here's hoping that all three will continue to reprise their characters in future years. *I'm aware Mark also portrayed Jake Skywalker in the Sequels.

Mark Hammel is like a breath of fresh air after all the toxic vibes around Star Wars especially now. Hearing his take on all things Star Wars, how he always tells the truth and is unbias and positive. Really feels like hearing from a positive wise Jedi master. That which he is, Grand Master Skywalker of the Second Jedi Order. 🙏 I especially love how Dinsey can't shut him up because he is one of the people who pretty much is Star Wars.

I always actually enjoyed the clunky dialogue of the prequels. "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away." Even the hate against jar jar, I had no opinion on him either way when I first saw the movies as a child, he just seemed like another character, I was even worried that he would die in the parts where he almost died. I had no reason to hate him. I think people hate jar jar just because they are so worried about what other people will think that they don't even realise their own reasons for hating something. Jar jar's personality would be pretty disliked in anything resembling adult society but that type of dislike is learned, you aren't born with it.

So even though I disliked some things, I didn't go around protesting and downright persecuting the people involved in the production, that's what most Star Wars fans did though and for me this only makes me fear people. I fear that one day if I make something that people like but then I disappoint them with the next installment, I'll get persecuted just like Jake Lloyd and George Lucas were lol. Everyone can hate the Star Wars movies, but looking at the saga and Star Wars as a whole, there’s for sure been a lot more good than bad releases since the originals back in the day. The hate I believe stems from the fact that Star Wars is a universally loved series by people of all ages, and that age difference splits the fan base too, nostalgia is a heavy force. I’m just glad I grew up in the era of the prequels, just as much nostalgia as the OT for me, but I love them both

I think it's important for all of us to remember is that Mark Hamill has experience working with George Lucas so he has an understanding of why he makes his movies the way he does. When it came to the prequels, Jake did not deserve so much harsh treatment. He was probably already incredibly nervous just being in a big budget Hollywood movie and he did his best. I feel that anyone who likes the prequels should not be condemned for admitting that they like them. When it comes to a series like Star Wars, hardcore fans tend to have impossibly high standards for future installments so in the end, George Lucas had to make the movies he wanted to see. He created something great and had a vision for it. The fact that he was able to make it a reality is amazing in itself. When it comes to his harshest critics and fans, they need to remember that without George Lucas, they wouldn't have Star Wars to begin with. Better to go into the next movie the way everyone should, to sit back and be entertained. Go in there with the mindset of not knowing what's going to happen and with no unreasonable expectations. Going to the movies is supposed to be fun and I'm sure the next Star Wars movie will be.

The biggest issue some hardcore fans had was his acting and dialogue. Personally I thought the movie did a great job with establishing how the Skywalkers are such great pilots. It all comes down to what I wrote in my original comment. Unreasonable expectations and standards. Everyone has an idea of what they want to see in a Star Wars movie and basically petition the producers to go with their ideas. They forget that while the studios are well aware of appeasing longtime fans, they also have to cater to a broader audience that may just be a casual fan or new to the series altogether. Sorry if I rambled but I hope it explained everything you were curious about.

I disagree completely, I grew up with them and I know why people hate them, and there were for things I hated too. 1) The plots were kind of confusing and convoluted. For example; Wait so the Trade Federation is attacking Naboo because..... some guy in a hood told them too? What did they want? Why are they going to him for directions? Ok, so Obi Wan did some detective work and tracked down the Bounty Hunter to a planet which was deleted from the Jedi Records and arrives being told he was expected because that planet, which he did not even know existed prior to that day, had been building a clone army of that bounty hunter..... Like they never bothered to reach out to the Republic at any point? The Jedi then take the army anyway, no questions asked, an army which, prior to that day, never even knew was being built. This probably would've helped if they didn't spend so much time on that crappy drama, which leads me to the next point 2) The crappy romance. Other than it being a little creepy that Anakin has wanted only one woman since he was 10, the dialogue does not sound like how normal humans talk. It sounds like someone read Shakespeare a couple times then decided he would try to rewrite it. That would be ok, if it didn't take up most of the movie. This is more Attack of the Clones, which is the worst movie of the prequels. Anakin isn't even remotely attractive, he comes across as a school shooter type. He's creepy, obsessive and a complete psychopath. "wow this dude just admitted to murdering a bunch of innocent civilians, has been staring at me when I told him it makes me feel uncomfortable and talks about how I'm all he thinks about, I'm gonna have his baby". This wouldn't be so big had it not been a major focus. 3) Honestly the worst part is that they don't take advantage of being a movie. You have the opportunity to SHOW vs TELL. There is so much sitting and talking for no reason. For example, Obi Wan arriving on Kamino to talk to Aliens. CGI ALIENS! So apparently there was this Jedi called Sifo Diyas who bought an army for the Republic? Why not do something like show some security footage of Sifo Diyas building the army? You live in a universe of holograms after all, why not just show one of him? As a result the audience is kind of confused half the time. This is part of the last part 4) We're never shown why the CIS is evil, or really what the average person thinks. Why is the CIS evil? I mean, they didn't attack the Republic, they were attacked. They were never shown to do anything evil, it was just implied. In Ep 4 we see why the Empire is evil, but also why they think they're good. It's clear that they want security and view utter brutality as a way to get it. They execute people who won't cooperate and blow up planets. Did the CIS ever do anything of the like? They just united a bunch of systems which were angry with the Republic. Sure they look evil, have a bunch of shady leaders, but did they actually do anything wrong? The Jedi and the Republic seem like villains in this case. There's also no context for what's going on, we never see what the average person feels about the war or the Jedi. That would've really helped the climax of the Birth of the Empire, but nothing seems that bad. Ep 3 starts with a huge battle over Coruscant after years of war, yet there's no devastation. The city looks just fine. Like what the hell? They seemingly forgot about the fucking invasion. Wouldn't it have been better if they had some scenes showing the suffering of the average person there? Collapsed buildings and all? Maybe some guys begin circulating rumors that because the Jedi Temple was relatively intact that the Jedi were traitors and tried to get the CIS to kidnap the Chancellor so they can take over. That would've made the turn towards Empire far more convincing! The OT did these relatively well. The Empire is demonstrated to be evil, the romance felt more normal (ok ignoring the accidental incest) and the plots were fairly straightforward. Hell, most movies do this well. The Prequels had good moments, as a Kid I just wanted to skip all this crap and go straight to the fighting. Who cares about Anakin and Padme, I want to see a giant Clone laser blow up a star ship.

You guys are ridiculous. For starters, the people with the strongest dislike for the prequels are most likely older people who have a more refined, intelligent taste in movies. There was a time when I liked the prequels...which is when I was a dumb kid. Secondly, this notion of assuming that people are hating "because that's the cool thing to do" and not because they actually dislike it is a massive copout. Its like saying "I'm going to ignore your argument because I know you don't really believe what you're saying." There is a staggering amount of information on the web describing why these movies are terrible. Have you read or listened to any of these reviews? There is a solid argument to made that the prequels are not well made movies. I'd like to set the record straight that I was 10 when the special edition of the OT came out and 12 when TPM came out. It's fair to say I grew up with ALL of the first 6 star wars movies. I watched and rewatched all of them countless times and loved everything star wars. Now at the age of 30 I only like a new hope and empire. Those are the only 2 movies out of all of them that I actually think are good movies and I enjoy rewatching.

I loved the new movies, it made me feel like a little kid again but then I go online and see everyone absolutely thrashing it. It just feels bad.. and now you can’t stop yourself from purposefully looking for anything that could be a problem and ranted about. At that point Its no longer entertainment. In my eyes if it ENTERTAINED me then it did it’s job. But everything has to be absolutely perfect for the fans and while I understand that these are huge franchises and a lot is expected from them it seems that no one can just take them at face value.

I think its important to know that George wanted to make the prequels a whole different era and setting. Which is exactly what happened, it didn't feel like the original movies, which looking back at it, is a good thing. The problem with the sequels from the past few years is that they only focused on using nostalgia from the original movies. I havent seen the newest few movies and probably never will. I have to say that as amazing as SW is, the fandom may be the most reactionary hate-filled one I've ever seen. This prequel hate, the utter fanboying of Ep 7 immediately turning into "It's horrible, it ruined my childhood", the bashing and ridiculing of everyone with a different opinion. Just the other day I saw this video of Mark Hamill playing pranks on Star Wars fans by walking in on them recording famous lines. Mr. Hamill talked to them, asked them what they liked about the movies and such. One girl said her favorite SW movie was Rogue One. The comments on that video were filled with "She's not a real fan", "She should die in a fire", "She must not have seen the originals", and that's not even mentioning the misogynistic responses of 'girls not being able to enjoy real scifi'. Such pathetic responses, really. Can their fragile egos really not deal with someone liking something they disliked? Someone not worshiping the original trilogy (which had plenty of flaws itself) like it's the Second Coming must die in gruesome ways and can't be allowed to have fun?

Tony Felgueres Let me tell you crybabies something from an adult perspective: it does not matter at all who shot first because either way it ends with Greedo dead and Han going away. To quote Harrison Ford: I don't know AND I DON'T CARE.

Francesco Brosolo That argument is beyond petty and ignorant..I'm with you, who gives a shit? Han shooting some random alien bounty hunter "first" somehow defines his entire character? Ridiculous.

Tony Felgueres And people wonder why Harrison Ford is so done with this fandom's bullshit...

Your comment, especially the first part is so unbelievably true. I've never seen such a toxic fanbase, where peolple are insulting others for having a different opinion and where "fans" are constantly trash talking movies, actors, directors and other fans. The majority of the fanbase consists of bitter, hateful morons who spread negative vibes without a pause. Star Wars fans should stick together and celebrate the franchise they live but the sad truth is that the fanbase is deeply divided and I don't think that will ever change.
