@@rumblefish9 It was always the intention, even back when Lucas only vaguely imagined a sequel trilogy decades ago, that an old Luke would return like Alec Guinness in the original film and hand down the legacy to a new generation. You sound like a kid who has only seen the prequels saying Luke steals Obi-Wan Kenobi's legacy in A New Hope.

That scene in a New Hope where Luke looks at the twin suns of Tatooine with John Williams’s music in the background gets me every single time. I’ve probably watched that movie over 50 times and it gets me every single time. Absolutely magical.

It is one of the most important scenes in the whole Star Wars series. I wonder if the movie would've been as successful without it. It's the first scene in the movie that really tells you the movie wants to be taken seriously, and not just be a comedic adventure romp. The tone established there may have been what inspired them to do the late script change of killing Obi-Wan, and then having him speak to Luke in the afterlife during the final battle. I think the original script just had Obi-Wan speaking on the communicator to him from the Rebel base. Also, that tone seems to be what The Empire Strikes Back leaned into heavily. They had the benefit of seeing how well the scene worked in the final film by that time.

I don't even think Lucas realizes how important that scene is --- it literally inspires you to find a zest for life and go on adventures! It has the same effect that looking at the ocean had on people like Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan --- wondering what was beyond the horizon. Such a perfect scene for the dreamer in us.

not just your life mate, but mine also. I was 8 back in 77 when i first Star Wars in the ABC Cinema in Walsall West Midlands, it was a saturday afternoon, i think it cost like 20 pence or 30 pence back then. I was that blown away i ran back outside and got back in the queue to watch it again. That film created what would later become my moral and ethical compass in life. I`de love the chance to shake Mark Hamill`s hand and say `Thank you`, it truly was a magical time in cinema history.

My Mom died in the summer of 2020. Later in the year I was watching the end of the second season of the Mandalorian, when suddenly I saw an appearance by, unspoiled to me, a younger (CGI'd) Luke Skywalker. And I cried like a baby, in a good way. It was like a surprise visit from an old friend, something happy to help me a little with my grief. That's the power of that character, and I'm glad that Mark seems to understand that kind of reaction from people.

Your words hit me hard in the chest. My Mom passed away around the same time as yours, and ever since, in both TV shows and film, even music… there are certain scenes or moments where I have this overwhelmingly emotional reaction. I always have a flicker of thought as to why i feel it, but I think I try so hard to constantly repress the sadness and woe and grief to the point that the true reason I feel something in that moment is almost confusing to me. Almost embarrassing because I think I should be stronger than it, I should be a rock because everyone goes through loss on that scale in one way or another. I felt the same thing when Luke showed up. I was embarrassed, watching it with my wife who had never really been a Star Wars fan, and letting out a whimper trying to stifle back tears and being so conflicted as to why I was embarrassed to begin with, or why I held back my feelings. Im sorry to ramble. You aren’t alone in your loss. And with how cold and distant the world seems lately, it’s nice to know that I am not alone in my feelings sometimes. I hope you find peace and longer stretches of comfort as time passes. I know that time passing and reflection of the good times, what I can share with my own little family, are the only bandages on a wound that will sit heavy forever.

I got to meet Mark Hamill at a meet and greet in Cincinnati many years ago. He was getting blasted by Star Wars fans, and even my favorite character from him is Luke. I couldn't help but not mention Star Wars and instead talked to him about voicing the Joker. I had brought my 1999 Master Replica Luke lightsaber with me so he could sign it. I didn't bring it to the counter because I didn't want to be another Star Wars nerd like 95% of the others. However, he seen the lightsaber when I got it back from my parents and he stopped me. Told me to bring it over and he'll sign it without me even asking about it and even put "May the force be with you" on it. My little kid eyes swelled up, I started to cry, and he gave me a hug. He such a nice man and is willing to notice his fans much more than 99% of other Hollywood celebrities.

He seems like enjoyed played Luke and got along well with Alec Guiness, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. I'm glad he went on the voice roles. One problem. Cal Kestis is 13 years older than Luke. Cal survived Order 66 while Luke was just born. Honestly, Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor have amazing story. Finishing Jedi Survivor feels a lot like The Empire Strikes Back. The game made a better story than the recent trilogy. If the old Extended Universe weren't de-canonized, Cameron Monaghan would have made an excellent Ben Skywalker, Luke's son with Mara Jade. Ben was a redhead.

The scar on Mark Hamill's face was from a near fatal car crash. The accident happened before Empire Strikes Back. He was driving on an LA freeway and almost missed an exit off ramp and lost control of his Ford Mustang. The scene where Luke Skywalker gets attacked by the ice planet Hoth snow creature in Empire Strikes Back George Lucas thought that would be a great way to explain why he got the scar.

Mark Hamill's one of the most kindest, nicest, and most legendary actors to ever walk the planet. More of him, each year, makes my heart beam with pride. I'm sure Carrie Fisher is smiling down upon him, each and every day, too. 🤟

Mark Hamill is an icon of the entertainment industry, which makes it all the more shocking that this report completely misstated his latest on-screen appearance as Luke Skywalker. You could be forgiven for essentially ignoring his de-aged appearances in a 2020 episode of "The Mandalorian" and a 2022 episode of "The Book of Boba Fett," but he directly reprised his role in 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker."

Never understood why he didn't have a bigger acting career. He's a great actor. Was he typecast? BTW he was on the Pilot of "Eight is Enough" when Star Wars became a hit, he tried to get out of the show. They wouldn't let him out. But then he got into a car accident which almost killed him and they had to recast the role of DAVID. He's in the pilot episode and I think he would have been good on that show if he stuck with it,
@Crunkboy415
@Crunkboy415 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the car accident did extensive damage to his face, which may have affected his ability to get leading man roles. If you notice his facial features up to the first Star Wars, he closely resembled another actor who ten years later would rise to fame and become the biggest A-Lister in history. Yes, I think Mark Hamill could have been Tom Cruise before Tom Cruise became Tom Cruise.😮

Mark Hamill was done with blockbusters after Return of the Jedi because of the crazy scheduling, workload and (back then) danger. It's a very stressful part of the business. Hamill also said before that he was always much more comfortable doing voice work and theatre. Very few actors actually want to do franchise films and blockbusters, they do it for the paycheque.

He was typecast as Luke Skywalker after the films, but didn’t age well after Return of the Jedi. In village of the damned with legend Christopher Reeve, he did not age well by 1995.

It’s really weird to me that for whatever reason, Mark Hamill is in my mind forever Luke Skywalker. While Harrison Ford on the other hand, has been able to act in several different roles and I never really looked at him as “JUST” Han Solo. I don’t understand why that is. But it is.

I am still ANGRY to this day over the way he was treated by Ruin Johnson in The Last Jedi. LUKE should have been the HERO of the Sequel Trilogy and TRAINED Rey for future trilogies. Rey was NOT ready to be the main character yet.

Agreed!✅ I was 20 and on tour in the Northeast that winter/Spring. For a solid month, I avoided all the newsstands or media until I got home a good week after ESB had opened. Even still, a tiny hint of a ‘shocker’ escaped and like a little kid, I held my fingers over my ears humming when unable to escape. I was standing in line at Ciné Capri to see it that next night after getting home hearing plot details publicly and plugged my ears (I’d forgotten my Walkman) while humming and staring them down. I think they got the hint - haha. All those opening credits loud befuddled gasps of “Episode FIVE⁉” were indelible memories. So glad that scene in Empire was not spoiled - as well as cliffhanger answered in ROTJ. I pretty much figured out that Ben had kinda told a white lie in order for it to logically be true. We had to wait another 3 years to have our answers back then. I was the premiere and the audience ROARED with approval. Fantastic cinematic experience. Almost as good as the Rebel Blockade Runner chased by the Imperial Star Destroyer opening scene in the original.🥰

Wish this interview could of been longer. Always a delight to hear Mark Hamill discuss Star Wars and his career, hearing his honest opinions and critiques. George Lucas’ story of hope and redemption will always resonate with people, and Mark Hamill’s portrayal of Luke Skywalker is an integral part of that story. Just a shame that George Lucas relinquished control of his creation. Mark Hamill, and Luke Skywalker, deserved better from the sequels. Shame on you Disney for what has been done to this once iconic franchise and Lucasfilm.
