Mark Hamill was so invested in the character of Luke Skywalker and the universe of Star Wars. You can see his enthusiasm in the way he speaks. This was more than a job or a paycheck. He signed on for the sequel trilogy only because he believed George Lucas, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fischer would be with him to continue their characters' stories.
Sadly, Disney took Star Wars from George Lucas after the three actors were signed to contracts.

A fan film or fan re-cut is an interesting idea. I remember a fan re-cut of a Jar Jar Star wars where they mostly replaced everything Jar Jar said with giberish and subtitles, and it was a better film; so much so the owners of the Star Wars franchise hunted it down and destroyed it. But I can't envision a re-cut of this turkey that could save it. So just ignore it and go with the brighter future for the characters that is in the books.

Mark Sees well, Vader did that long before Luke was born and, Luke did use anger to defeat Vader but didn’t kill him. And still, Luke ultimately didn’t strike Kylo. Both characters had grown old and lost faith in the things they once believed in, but were convinced to come back to save their loved ones a final time, redeeming themselves and finding peace right at the end. Luke’s character in TLJ goes from believing that heroes don’t exist, because he - the greatest hero of them all - had failed, to embracing the fact that failure is a part of everyone’s life; the best we can do is learn from them and not give up. By doing that, he becomes a hero once more. Isn’t that more poignant and way more interesting than if his character had never made mistakes? Disclaimer - I don’t think the film is perfect, by any means. But I think of all the things worth criticising, the choice to strip Luke of his best qualities so that we get to watch him climb back up again shouldn’t be one.

Saw the original Star Wars in the Cinema in 1977 when I was 6 years old. All the subtle human elements are missing from the new films. The original trilogy may have had some clumsy dialogue and simplistic storytelling but they took their time to let the actors ACT and make the characters something more than the two dimensional pantomime heroes and villain we are getting now. Watch the iconic scene at about the 1:00 mark where Luke looks at the setting suns. LOOK at the way Luke walks awkwardly and aimlessly kicks at the ground in front of him. ACTING. Entirely missing from SW now where they just read the lines between explosions.

I'd say it's as much George's fault for abandoning film making during the 80s and 90s. Sure he collaborated with Spielberg and Howard, but honestly he was never the best "people person" and being a rich recluse who owned the best special effects studio in the industry was enough for him. Then when technology got to a point where they did the special editions, he tested the waters to see if Star Wars was still viable enough for the movie market which is the reason why he did episodes I-III, not because he had a driving, artistic passion to do those movies. His entire career he has been known to not be an "actor's director", all the way back to American Graffiti. Honestly he would have been happier to be an animation director, but he got tied in with Francis Ford Coppola, so he felt the pressure to produce movies to be taken seriously. But even his first few films were not challenges for him, he told stories from his own life, things that were familiar. And when he did Star Wars, he had no great expectations, most of the cast saw the movie as a joke, and by all accounts his first edits were disasters - the only reason it was a success was his wife at the time worked her butt off to save the film in editing. And she won the oscar, not George. That was what destroyed him. Successful by every measure, but not by his peers, and not even in his own mind. The prequels are as pure a vision of George Lucas' star wars as we will ever get. Messy, cluttered, unfocused, too much imagination without direction or purpose. And yes there has been fan hatred of Lucas, but I think it's more that he feels defeated by the industry as a whole. It's less to be spiteful of the audience, and more his way of trying to return to obscurity. Star Wars didn't need him after Return of the Jedi, and now he feels like it doesn't need him again. Kind of sad, but that's how I see it. Truth be told, I'd rather see what Lucas had in mind for Episodes 7-9 than what Disney did, but some things aren't meant to be.

i would disagree that he didnt want to show 1 -3 episodes and made them for money. Lucas always believed that the whole story is about tragic life of darth vader, he was the main character, so if bacn in the days he simply had not enough money to make all 6 episodes, in the future when he got the chance he finally finished what he wanted and if he wanted money he woudl make more episodes, but he believed that this is suppose to be the end of star wars, he said in his interview he didnt see the point in makin more movies coz the story was told. It wasn't that he didn't have the money, 4-6 made him all the money in the world. It was that he felt he didn't have the technology needed to tell the stories the way he envisioned them. The main problem, I gather, is that he was never really sure what Star Wars was going to be. Like he told Mark Hamill after making the first one, he talked about another trilogy that would take place 30 years later and would have him playing the Obi-Wan part, passing on Excalibur to the next generation. Other than that, and a vague idea about the first trilogy being about Darth Vader's and Obi-Wan's younger days, I don't think he had a grand plan for the story of Star Wars. I base this on how many times Lucas changed the story while working on Episode V, constantly going back and forth between whether Vader should be Luke's father or not. Vader was a henchman in Episode IV, his importance to the story was as a rival to Obi-Wan, not some galactic force of change as he came to be. And Leia being Luke's sister didn't even factor in until Episode VI's story. Lucas did not have a grand plan from the start, he made up a lot of stuff on the fly - which is a fine way to make a movie, but it creates a bit of a mess if you are trying to make a space opera. I put the new movies in with the prequels. I don't find much merit in any of them.

It certainly appears as though he uses force choke on the guards, however there could be various scenarios here: (1) He did in fact force choke them, and either killed them (thus showing some dark side tendencies) or he choked them for a short period of time making them lose consciousness (something i believe). (2) He used a force power to make them think they were choking just to force them back away from him. This may have scared the guards causing them to run away from Luke. Obviously we see nothing after the initial choking moment to back this up. Really just comes down to what you want to believe. He was very calm while he used his force powers, making me think the pigs probably lived to see another day.

This film quite literally threw away all the lore about being a jedi (because of Yoda?), Luke became a coward that got beat up by Rey, a 15 year old Ben Solo, and ran away to a remote island to die of old age (which eventually of coarse he did), the "love" between Rose and Finn was just as bad as Annie and Padme (maybe worse considering they knew each other for less than 18 hours), Snoke can't sense or even hear that Kylo is moving that lightsaber to kill him, the "humor" in this film were nearly on the level of the Phantom Menace, and now all we have to look forward to in this trilogy is the idea of Rey turning Kylo to the lightside or Rey killing him. This film may be the worst Star Wars movie I ever saw, and I laughed when Leia flew through Space into a broken ship and survived yet Luke can't handle creating an illusion of himself (when Snoke could easily manipulate Reys mind from the same distance).

Luke uses the Dark Side to defeat Vader after he threatens to turn Leia, then he turns back after realizing he may turn completely. So we know that Luke has darkness inside him, that it can come out and he immediately feels regret over it because of his innately good nature. So how is VIII not a reflection of that character? It's exactly the same thing with the fight against Vader, the small darkness festering inside Luke came out for a brief second and it destroyed everything he built, so of course he would hide away in shame as a failure, it's a natural progression from where we left off in ROTJ.

I think you probably misunderstand based on your interpretation of ROTJ. Luke is tempted by the Dark Side throughout the fight from Palpatine and Vader. There is conflict within him. However, after he cuts of Vader's hand and looks at his own and Palpatine says, "Your hate has made you powerful. Now fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!" he realizes what has happened. He repudiates the Dark Side. He says no to evil. "Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You've failed, your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me." That's the most powerful moment in the Saga. Everything over 3 movies (or even 6) has built to that point. It's a baptism by fire so to speak. The conflict within him is now gone. "So be it....Jedi." Palpatine knows he has failed. The completion of the mythic Hero's Journey that Luke had started on in ANH. It's his explicit rejection of the Dark Side. That's not a misinterpretation. It's clear in both actions and words. That's what Lucas intended for the scene. That's how Marquand directed the scene. That's how Hamill and McDiarmid played the scene. And it's why Hamill had issues with this characterization. It was all out of character for Luke.

You're mostly right, except when you dichotomize the Force and assume people can only be turned one way or another fully. You can use the Dark Side or the Light Side without being turned fully, which is how Luke defeats Vader. So clearly Luke can still use the Dark Side but he's ashamed of it and never feels it for more than a little bit. So we have several facts established, 1: A Jedi can use his anger, use the Dark Side, without turning to the Dark Side fully. 2: Luke specifically is not perfect as he demonstrated his use of it in ROTJ. 3: There's no evidence that he purged the Dark Side from himself at the end of ROTJ, only that he is tempted and rejects it immediately. 4: Until his failure with Ben, he was a Jedi and even tried to revive the Order. So with all that established, it's not at all out of character, in fact it is very much his character, to be tempted and to immediately pull back, which is exactly what happened in the movie. And with all those deaths on his hands, of course an innately good person like Luke would seclude himself so he could cause no more harm, and would of course realize the inherent flaws in the Jedi ways that led to his father's downfall, his temptation and failure, and Ben's descent into the persona of Kylo Ren. So tell me how Is he out of character, given all these facts? Or if you'd like to dispute any of them I'd definitely love to hash it out, I feel like lots of people don't notice these little things and without all the tiny details I can see how people would see this as out of character.

You misunderstand. As MauiDave74 pointed out, Luke was tempted and indeed gave in to his anger to some degree, but before it was too late, he stops. He decides against the dark side. It doesn't mean Jedi never get angry, nor that being angry means you're using the dark side. Giving in to that anger, to the emotion of it, is what leads to the dark side. Acting out of emotion rather than reason.

My view is that anything produced in the name of Star Wars without George Lucas's involvement is simply fan fiction on a big budget. Shakespeareans wouldn't accept some random people continuing a classic like Romeo and Juliet so why should fans of the originals and prequels accept these new stories as part of the story? Star Wars was always at least half about the universe imagined by Lucas. Laser blasters, light sabers, droids, starship analogs of ww2 battles, active religious magic, and genuine evil existing in the hearts of the powerful, that's the setting that is being stolen from the characters that helped introduce us to the universe. Those characters portrayed classic hero and villain traits and we all fell in love with the entire concept of the universe and the people in the struggle of that setting. Now the people have been killed, disgraced and killed, and drastically altered in ways that have undermined our relationship with the foundation of the story altogether AND they are screwing up the universe at the same time. If an X-Wing is capable of light speed why not use a dozen or so to take out even a deathstar? The scene where the escape ship is turned on the chasing imperial ship and lightspeeds through killing it is well executed, but invalidates every other space weapon imaginable, especially if a light speed capable ship can be made to fly unmanned. You could just put a hard nose on a light speed engine with a guidance/aiming mechanism and ballistics says death is at hand. No need for further discussion, any ship not moving at light speed itself would be dead once in range and targeted. An entire planet of interplanetary Las Vegas drunken weapons developing aliens can't see that? And that is just the technical side of just one of the problems generated by this movie's physical world errors (bombers require gravity). So basically, the writers are failing at upholding the universe, killing the relatable characters, and coating the stories they are telling in preachy political nonsense that has no place in the universe we use to escape from our own.

The STORY feels like it was done in a weekend, but the FX should take at least 3 months to do all that spaceship stuff. Maybe less, if they got the "make animate button" working properly.

The voice actor for Ackbar died so it makes sense....but not even bringing up his death was insulting. "It's a Trap" is so famous that most Star Wars fans recognize him and to kill Ackbar off in such a way was not acceptable. My view is that anything produced in the name of Star Wars without George Lucas's involvement is simply fan fiction on a big budget. Shakespeareans wouldn't accept some random people continuing a classic like Romeo and Juliet so why should fans of the originals and prequels accept these new stories as part of the story? It gives me peace of mind when watching the new movies but even when looking at it from the perspective that is is a fan fiction movie, it doesn't make the movie anymore enjoyable.

Last Jedi is getting at something more difficult than a forever-virtuous role model: the courage to acknowledge when you're wrong and need to own up to it. For Luke, one such moment was in the backstory when he realized he was actually about to kill Ben Solo. Another is in the film when he realizes that complete renunciation is going overboard. The entire film is about how to deal with failure, both personal and strategic.

As far as I'm concerned, the Expanded Universe is far more legitimate than anything Disney's churning out. Lucas gave his direct blessing to stories such as Heir to the Empire and Shadows of the Empire. Disney doesn't have that.

The treatment of Luke is a sad reflection of what our society is becoming in degrees: emasculated. On top of that, very little in the movie makes sense, as many others have observed. I am more of a Doctor Who fan -- but that too has been ruined in much the same way. The franchise has gone over to the dark side of identity politics. This video above is a lamentation for Luke, a funeral song, to lament the passing of his character and the entire Star Wars story, which has been killed by extremely bad writing.
