HELLO THERE, I finally finished my first ever Star Wars video essay which is about Luke Skywalker, the Jedi and Non-violence. The essay will tackle Luke in TLJ specifically the scene in the hut with Ben Solo. In my essay i will analyse Luke's journey through the OT and episodes 7 and 8, primarily using Joseph Campbell's The Hero With A Thousand Faces, which inspired and helped Lucas write the first Star Wars. It took me 5 months to write and edit, I hope you guys will enjoys this. NO this video essay will not trash on TLj as i want to analyse the Rashomon Sequence as objetive as I can, because there are many who enjoyed TLJ and they have all the right to feel that way. Here is the link and please send feedback, leave a thumbs, share it and subscribe. Thanks!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5W6g6WgjtiajNU

I think an injustice has been done. To kill Mark Hamil off from Star Wars. Plus Han Solo. Pretty soon you're not going to have any star characters that made this movie great. Then to replace these actors that with actors no one has seen before. Disney its time to go back to the drawing board !

I know! In the next one, Luke wakes up and finds its all been a terrible Sith Lord mind trick, like the one given to Anakin Skywalker his dad, by the Emperor to betray the Jedi? He wakes up, and the story follows the one originally written by George Lucus, Han Solo survives, and Princess Leia is a political leader of the Alliance, not space Mary poppins.

The movie made no sense. It was bewildering to watch. Nobody had clear reasons for doing what they were doing, and there was no world building, or backstory to how we got there ( TFA sucked too). It’s militarily incompetent on every battle scene and the movie goes out of it’s way to diminish every heroic act (Finn) the characters might do. Mark was calling that out. I REALLY wish Mark Hamill could have directed this trilogy.... he knows what’s good for Star Wars and Luke’s story, no one other than George Lucas himself could do it better. And I feel George and Mark have a good enough relationship that George would listen to Mark’s input for the character, even though he is George’s creation, that they would be able to come up with something that worked well for Luke. Rian just ruined everything though and wouldn’t listen to Mark about how he feels this is not something Luke Skywalker would do.

Look at Ryan Johnsons body language. Especially in the last clip. He seems *out of his comfort zone.* As if he's cringing from every word Mark says. Like he's expecting Mark to call everything out at any second like we can tell he really wants to. We are frustrated and confused just as Mark Hamill was while reprising Luke. The character arc makes no sense. Right, so he would forgive Darth Vader, a mass murdering space Hitler, based on the faith that he still had good in him. But his nephew? The child of his sister and best friend? A boy who has never killed anyone? Nah, try to kill em in his sleep because he has a little teenager puberty angst and been contacted by Snoke. Get the fuck outta here, -Ryan- "Plothole" -Johnson- !

Joe Valenitni Funny you should say that, I watched a critic review of TLJ on a youtube channel and he explained that you can use the child test to see if the plot makes sense. A kid should be able to understand the story if it's sensible (of course extreme detail is not expected for a kid to understand, but the basic story) when you explain it to them. Kids familiar with Star Wars wouldn't understand why certain things happened in TLJ.
@AxiomApe6 жыл бұрын
Of course we love Star Wars and of course there were good moments in TLJ who can deny that? But the overall story and character arcs were so cringy and out of place that I just can't bring myself to get excited over it. I just want to say that Mark Hamill is a hero to me and many Star Wars fans. I believe he is truly a SW fan himself and seems that Rian Johnson’s image of Luke Skywalker in this film really bothered him. And I support his emotions strongly because me and many other fans feel his character should have been portrayed differently not used as a plot device. So anyone who wants to bad mouth Mark Hamill for giving the film negative publicity, please stop. He felt like if there was a voice to be heard in this fiasco it should have been him. I love you and thank you for being the champion no one asked you to be, Mark Hamill!! And if I met him at a Comic-Con event I couldn’t contain myself. I would be star struck the whole time. Thank you to anyone willing to read and appreciate this little speech I just made, and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Just clarify on the topic, I had problems with this film but it still had Star Wars elements to it. I’m still sold on Kylo Ren’s story, but I wish they didn’t kill off Snoke. He should have been the overall antagonist like the Emperor was in the original trilogy. The biggest question I ask is who is going to be main antagonist now, because Kylo still doesn’t seem 100% evil. Anyone have any theories on the matter please let me hear it, because I love talking and debating Star Wars.

Luke was a more complicated character than you are trying to make him seem. Absolutely no one - especially one as burdened as Luke - would stay in a a situation where he has completely failed everyone and every thing he loved. You are saying that Luke would just be like “ Hey Leia, I turned your son to the dark side but no harm no foul right?”. Luke became disillusioned with the Jedi order because according to their ways, killing any Sith is the right thing to do and so killing Kylo was right according to their ways and so he discarded their ways and escaped the fallout from what had happened to instead revert to the simple life he once had as a farm boy - quite poetic.
@alexrydin4 жыл бұрын
Coding Time yoda and obi-wan list everyone and everything they loved at the hands on Anakin. Like Obi-Wan said, he was like a brother to him. They both went into hiding, but neither gave up. Neither changed who they were. You can have dramatic arcs without completely rewriting the character.
@codingtime17114 жыл бұрын
Alex Rydin Yoda changed dramatically and Obi -Wan matured. My point is that this Luke isn’t completely rewritten and his recognizable impulse showed when he tried to kill Ben and his childishness showed in his scenes with Rey. This isn’t Luke rewritten, this is just a different side of him; a different direction other than the archetype hero we started off with and as far as I am concerned, that is great!

So Rian Johnson missed the blatantly obvious reason why luke was on the island which was staring him in the face? The idea that he went to the first Jedi temple in order to train in solitude and discover buried secrets of the Jedi and gain new powers like yoda did? Nope? Not ringing a bell there Rian? God damn, how did that float over his giant round head?

It didn't fly over his head but as Mark says at some point in this video (when Hamill was talking about the "Evil Luke" theory for example) Rian Johnson just scorns the idea of doing anything the fans may have predicted already and sadly what you are saying would be far too predictable for the likes of the esteemed Rian Johnson to follow. Like the man scorns the idea that fans can be smart and creative so he rejects all the fan theories for that reason, but if you are going to do something different at least make it believable. RJ seemed to completely fail at that and the interactions between him and Hamill in these interviews seem to make it clear that Hamill saw this train wreck coming and RJ simply is too much of an arrogant asshole to adopt good fan theories and would rather do something with shitty writing as long as expectations were "subverted"
@Denzel_Greene5 жыл бұрын
The Chainsaw Squirrel There’s a few huge flaws with that. A: In TFA Han said that he disappeared because he blamed himself for Kylo. B: Even if he were training, he’d have felt that shift from Kylo and Snoke gaining more control and from Han dying, so if he wasn’t disconnected from the Force it would seem like he’s actively ignoring the problem. C: Luke had already rejected the advice of his old Jedi mentors on wether he should kill Vader or not. If Luke got physically involved, he’d have to put Kylo down which is something Luke could never do. RIan Johnson didn’t just decide to make Luke a recluse, J.J. did. RIan had to write a way that puts Luke on a secluded planet for a good reason. To that end, he went the Lucas route and put him In self imposed exile for his failure in order to explain his absence as he did with Yoda

No. He is pandering to ComCon fans, almost regurgitating their comments. This is the same guy who approached Lucas about Luke killing Vader and taking his place and being hurt when Lucas said no. There is a reason Hamill hasn't successfully written or directed in his career. Hamill is bitter and, like I said, being savvy in getting the crowd on his side. I've never understood fans who place Luke above all else: these post RTJ views of him. Maybe if I liked his character and saw him as the savior I'd maybe understand. But Vader or rather Annakin brought balance, not Luke. Vader, as a parent, recognized love and thus an act to save. Luke, as Obi Wan knew, was a piece and part in Annakins story. Those are the nuances of Luke Hamill either missed or in his fan seeking adoration pushes aside. Realize that Luke learned about the force when he was too old. He always had anger issues and was impulsive. His father saves him in the end...the father and son bond. The idea Luke would go on to be this perfect, strong jedi is not only nonsensical but lazy. Rian nailed Luke, and in part played up Hamill's own personal bitterness and the Luke fanboys in a brilliant way. I think Hamill would do well to go back and read some Joseph Campbell.

Many fans of TFA and TLJ realized this and now do not like those movies or the third one.

It's so telling in that first interview just how off center Rian was from what JJ intended. I can guarantee that Mark figured he was going to mentor Rey and be like her Obi-Wan and pass the torch to this new generation. The joke about the scripts was because Luke is only in TFA for like 5 seconds, but it's clear he was excited for what was to come. That was the whole fucking point of getting the main OT cast back! Luke gets his Obi-Wan moment and grand send off. Instead he's reduced to a hermit coward.

Yeah it's pretty cliche but it would've made sense for a Star Wars film. Even if you take Palpatine and anakin out the picture dooku and the separatist were waging war across the galaxy. After order 66 the empire took over and the jedi order was no more. How was the jedi the problem here? In the sequels even though kylo killed the other jedi and went to the darkside the galaxy at large wasn't fucked up because of the jedi, or kylo personally, the first order was the chief offender.
