Mark Harmon, Star QB-turned-actor, recounts UCLA Football's win over No. 1 Nebraska in 1972

Before he was a star actor, Mark Harmon was a student-athlete at UCLA, where he was the starting quarterback for the Bruins when they upset No. 1 Nebraska in 1972. He sat down with Pac-12 Networks to recapture that unforgettable day.

As a die-hard UCLA fan from the upper Midwest, I still think a lot about the great 1973 team that Mark Harmon was on that would put up 50-60 points in a lot of games that 1973 season. Although Nebby got revenge on us in Lincoln, the season boiled down to the regular season finale against our crosstown rival USC and we lost 23-13 and our chance to go to the Rose Bowl. To this day I grieve over that damn game.

As a junior at UCLA in the fall of 1972, my college roommate and best buddy was Efren Herrera, the placekicker hero of this huge upset victory. I often reflected upon how wonderful it must've been for the UCLA Football announcer, former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon, to call this game (and the others for the next two years) of his son Mark's Bruin career!

I spent 4 years in the USAF at Offutt AFB in Nebraska (graduated from UCLA and got my commission) and all we heard about was Johnny Rodgers, Bob Devaney, and GOBI GRED (Go Big Red) Nebraska Cornholers). I got off of active duty in May of '72 and damned sure I was going to be in the Mausoleum for that game! When Herrera hit that field goal and the remaining 22 seconds ran off the clock, we all went wild and were down on the field mobbing up with the players. What. A. Night!

I had no idea he was that good! I’ve never seen old footage of Harmon running down the field like that. I was five years old when that game was played.

After two consecutive National Championships, Nebraska was due. Had to listen on the radio as there was no TV coverage here. Congrats to “Gibbs” from a lifelong Husker fan. (But we got you back here in 73, lol!)

It was a figurative crime back then with ABC-TV having a lock on NCAA football that several matchups between major college powers were never televised, as the network was very restrictive of how many telecasts they'd do for any college football team in a season.

@ i remember the university hoping for two regular season games and it was a luxury to get three. They paid well but had to share tv revenues with the conference.

He was one of my young teen boy sports idols...I looked kinda like him and wasn't overly big but ended up playing QB at my HS as a 5'9" 150 lbs kid with very good foot speed and a decent arm who loved to compete.

The Nebraska quarterback in that game David Humm is from my hometown Fayetteville, NC but I believe he recently passed away. Correction it was not David Humm it was Terry Luck who QB'd at Nebraska in this time frame who was from Fayetteville, NC

I remember my dad, and the press too, talk about him [and *his dad*] in occasionally reverent tones for their football presence in LA - they seemed dynastic. (Similar to earlier respect for Kareem’s presence in UCLA basketball.) I paid less attention to Bruin football than my family until I moved on campus and had players as dorm mates at Rieber Hall in ‘79.

I was at Kenny Rodgers fund raiser back in the 80's when he brought in athletes, movie stars, and just famous people and play golf, tennis, basketball, etc., and got to meet Harmon. He is not a star in his mind. He is just a normal guy who happened to do what he loves to do and was successful doing it.
