Hoppus is an incredibly underrated bassist. In fact his bass playing is an overlooked part of blink 182. Most people point out Travis’ drumming or toms over dramatic singing
@sloppy_hand4 жыл бұрын
seems like he used to play more chordal stuff back in the day... must be one of the reasons I like the early Blink more

Chordal? I just learned a new word. Hard to believe I took guitar lessons for 3 years
@sloppy_hand3 жыл бұрын
@@justinTime077 I don't know if you are being ironic or not.. I also don't know if there is such a word in english (my main language is portuguese), but I use it to mean something chord-oriented (against single note playing)
@justinTime0773 жыл бұрын
@@sloppy_hand I think arpeggios? That’s something they are known for
@sloppy_hand3 жыл бұрын
@@justinTime077 no. Arpeggios are when the chord notes are played one by one (in a pattern)... a chordal playing for me is when all notes of the chord are played together (like a strummed guitar). Think Lemmy or sometimes Lou Barlow.
@sloppy_hand3 жыл бұрын
@@justinTime077 an arpeggio, as I understand, is a way of playing a chord. Usually, bass players are more scale oriented (there is a relationship between chords and scales but bass players usually wont play a chord note by note, but some importantant voicings for a given progression/ harmonic content) and will play single notes. Mark used to play much like a guitar player would, specially when you think his greatest influence is Robert Smith (and also I believe the aforementioned Lou Barlow with Dinosaur Jr)... Again, I don't know if you're being highly ironic, if you're trying to test me or else... I'm selftaught, and I speak mainly portuguese, if the word "chordal" is non existant from a college musician point of view, doesnt make difference (unless you are a snob), as long as you get the point

He is a lot better bassplayer than what most people think, not the best in the business but clearly underrated. Barker is probably considered the best musician in Blink by most , and rightfully so. But just listen to Blink's songs with bass only and you realise how good he really is , and then add travis drums and you will realise how well connected these 2 musicians are

Anthem Part 2 and Rock Show shouldn’t be one here, and arguably Anthem too. Good songs, but not exactly up to Mark’s best. The former are really basic and the latter is as well other than the one section. 21 Days and Cacophony are pretty glaring omissions, and Stockholm Syndrome has a lot more to it than the two Anthems and Rock Show.
