one thing that opened my eyes up to this was a comment i saw a while ago on a similar video. it said that Mark hoppus plays bass like a rhythm guitar. Mike Dirnt plays it like a bass. That’s why from mark we get less technical riffs but we still get memorable and great sounding riffs. I also prefer mark’s style because his bass playing is there to support the song and amplify it, while mike’s is often there to show how good mike is at playing bass.

Both are really underrated musicians. As a "former" bass player, my preference goes to Mike, because he takes inspiration from a wide range of sources and is really capable of translating it into his own style - not that Mark doesn't do so, but I feel like he's been influenced by Mike in doing this. Anyway, both of them showed the big audience that punk is just not all about speed, but also about technique and melody. For me they have been the gateway to my now-sacred beasts of the instrument, like Matt Freeman, Roger Lima and Les Claypool. Thank you for this video!

Dirnt is a far better bassist, both technically and melodically. It's no contest. Dirnt is almost the lead player in the band. The guitars were mostly power chords but the bass underneath was far more dynamic and his fills were perfect. Hoppus wrote some decent standalone riffs but his playing during songs is relatively boring. Then there's their live performances. People use the fact that Mark sings and plays, but not on every song. And even then, he usually missed his vocal notes and either plays his bass parts more simple or just messes up. Whereas Mike is almost always singing harmonies to Billie Joe and hitting them spot on every time while never missing a note on the bass, a feat that's far more impressive considering he has more complex bass parts to play while singing harmonies (which can often be harder than singing lead as you're not trying to match instrumentals but rather the lead vocals and using either higher or lower notes). In short, Mark cannot hold a candle to Mike.

I am a bassist myself and I grew up listening to Blink-182 and one of the reasons I picked up the bass at the first place was because of Mark Hoppus (the other being Flea, obviously, lmao) I play in an indie rock band with only 1 guitarist and due to that I feel like I need to take the space that usually a second guitar would. So I really look up to Mark in regards of tone and texture, and especially technique (even though I would consider myself to be a more technically proficient guy and not only play alternate picked 8th or 2-string chords), but I borrow his two-string technique in many verses, where my guitarist/vocalist would sing and play just a couple of notes here and there, and I would lead both the bass frequency and guitar-like chord sound. Also I like to use Chorus and flanger because of that, adds even more space. Second thing I look up to is playing simple, yet driving lines underneath the lead guitar. Messing with octaves, etc. And his bass tone from untitled and neighborhoods is flawless. P-bass with that meaty mid growl and spanking metal string sounds, but still with plenty of bass. Love that guy and he is a huge inspiration to me musically - I just try not to copy him, but add his influences in my own playing. When it comes to Mike Dirnt - well... I'm not a huge fan of Green Day (even though Dookie is neat and American Idiot is a GREAT album), I know couple of his bass lines, I stole a few of his licks here and there, but to me he sounds a bit generic as a bassist. Which is not bad, he does great by not overplaying and actually adds a lot to music, but could be it's just the music of Green Day not being fancy enough to me. Blink is more about those maj7th and 9th harmonies in guitar and bass (also with Tom later adding a shit ton of FX); Green Day just plays casual punk stuff in regards to music MOST of the time, so Mike doesn't really have so much space or melody to play around with.

@@kleinkaufman8940 That doesnt mean anything tho, Mark is a great songwriter sure, but his musicianship overall is lacking, although his songs are catchy and cool, he mostly sticks with the most basic fifths/thirds formula on his basslines and every single song he has written only have power chords, on the other hand Mike Dirnt has written much more intricate basslines that dont consist of only adding thirds or fifths to the root and he often defines the tonality of GD songs with the nuances he adds. Besides playing guitar is not hard once you get used to playing an instrument, in this case bass, both of them can do that.

Soooo, lets mix myself in this discussion. Blink and green day are my favorite 2 bands ever. But as bassists, they fulfill a different role in the music. Most of the time, tom plays riffs, while billie plays chors progs. So the bass has to adept to that. But I have to say Mike is what inspired me to start playing bass, but Mark really grew on me. I like them both, they’re legends😊

I never saw Mark Hoppus as a bassist as much as I saw him as a frontman so the comparison is interesting to me. Blink 182 are a 3 piece with 2 vocalists and that had to have an impact on his songwriting as his focus was split between the bass and vocals; one of the great things about Blink 182 is that they have 2 great frontmen that shine in their own respective styles. Mike Dirnt is more technically capable for sure and his bass stands out alot more in Green Day songs but his role is different and Green Day tends to be more focused in their musical direction so I don't know that a direct comparison is really fair.

i think of mark hoppus as a pianist on bass, and mike dirnt as a bassist. mark hoppus is able to create much more vivid and interesting structures with chords that flavor up the guitar’s slower bits, while dirnt is able to perfectly add to a song and make interesting bass parts that add a bit more flavor to green day’s songs, keep them moving. TL;DR, why not both?

As a fellow bassist myself, I really dislike the idea of comparing these two bassists competitively against each other. I literally can't choose, because both of them are super awesome within their own rights. Now, I'll admit that I'm way more into Blink 182 than I am Green Day. However, I do still highly enjoy both bands, and most certainly take influences from both of these guys!
