@@Christian-Ray They didn't say that great white is metal they said the first album was. And it sure as shit was. One of the best from that era in fact. After that they went in a more pop / blues rock direction just like Motley Crue did after shout at the devil.

One of my all time favorite bands. Mark has a talent for knowing when to shred,when to add a subtle part and pair that with the riffs. Complete guitarist. Add in the fact that Jack Russell is a amazing vocalist. Amazing!! They had great success but I look at bands that were more successful commercially and they don’t hold a candle to Great White.Mark is humble to no rockstar attitude. I the band all the best thanks for being a big part of my life growing up thru today👍

That first GW album is unreal. I purchased it at 12 years old in 1985 and wore it out. To this day, I play the cd regularly and it has had up better than most from that era. Jack's vocals are just vicious and the songwriting is on another level for that time. The Out Of The Night E.P. is fantastic too. The first albums and E.P.s by RATT, W.A.S.P, Icon, Rough Cutt, Black 'N Blue (all 1983-85) are still killer, too.

I could not agree with you more. Those are all great mentions. Another '80s gem that holds up really well and is a favorite of mine to this day would be license to kill from Malice. Just like great whites self-titled album, it is a bit of an anomaly and a real standout in the bands catalog.

I went to see Judas Priest in 84 on the Defenders Tour,and there was these people walking around the parking lot plastering these newspaper looking flyers on all the cars…I grabbed one,and it was all about Great White,like a Bio and a bunch of pics..anyway,I was thinking ,who the hell is Great White?..Never heard of em…I didn’t know they were opening for Priest…I was blown away..Great White was amazing..That was the loudest show ever,but after that night I was hooked…I went the next day and bought the ST record….I still have the flyer too!!
@seangagnonProvidenceR.I.

I attended that tour as well in Providence , Rhode Island what an excellent show . There was something special about going to concerts in the 80’s , the build up on local radio , the flyers , just all of that to me it was more authentic and intimate imo . The 80’s produced some great music , my favorite in fact !

@@seangagnonProvidenceR.I. absolutely agree….Going to a concert in the 80’s was a very different experience than now….I went to that show in Biloxi,Mississippi…I was 20 years old,and it was my first big concert…I remember all the excitement,and how loud and powerful it was…That one show made a huge impact on me…it was life changing….Just the sheer power of it was something I had never seen before….It was great to be young in the 80’s…

@@scottpeters4401 Man those 80’s concerts were off the hook ! I was 13 and my first concert was Jethro Tull and I was in awe it being my first show, but then a week later I went to see Judas Priest with Iron Maiden and thought Tull was eh compared to what I just witnessed . Priest Screaming for Vengeance and Maiden Number of the Beast that one show changed my life it was epic I wanted it to never end . That concert is still etched in my head and will be forever . Most of today’s music really doesn’t do it for me , the 80s had so many great guitarists like Rhoads , EVH, DeMartini , Lynch and so many others , the stage shows were just incredible it was so much fun to see all these great bands. We’re lucky to have witnessed it the kids today don’t know what they missed out on !

For me, Great White is in the top five LA bands from that era. I think much of their music (mid to late 80s) still holds up today. The first album didn't really represent the kind of band they were. They were clearly trying to be heavier instead of more blues/rock oriented. Cinderella did the same thing. The first album was good, but then they made the switch to more of a hard rock/bluesy band. I still listen to Great White regularly, even the newer stuff. But I must say that it just isn't the same without Jack Russell. He had the right voice for that band.

They all started off as heavy because that's what was in atm, I'm sure the pressure from the label made them tone it down a bit and have some radio friendly tunes on future releases. The bluesy rock was always there in both bands as influences from the 70s

I saw GREAT WHITE open for TESLA in a summer show. “ Save All Your Love “ - was such a powerful tune. Live. Forget it. I even bought “ Full Circle “. Great release. Was going to see them in R.I - but it was 50 miles out of the way. Couldn’t. Thank God.

I love this interview. I've never heard Mark Kendall speak before. He's very warm, engaging and funny. Great guitarist too, of course. I saw Great White twice back in the day, opening for the incredible Judas Priest on the Defenders Tour in 1984. Back then, I kinda knocked them, but they were actually really good in retrospect. They rocked real heavy; I mean, they were nearly as heavy as Priest. I remember the songs "I'm A Rocker" and their cover of The Who's "Substitute." They definitely got much better (and more commercial) later-on by 1987 with their great *Once Bitten* album, but they were already pretty decent back in 1984.
