My father was a local singer and guitarist in the Scottish Highlands (Alistair McKenzie) and both he and I truly adored this song. As emotional as it makes me now after his untimely passing in 2020, so too does it bring a warm glow to my heart and a smile to my face when I hear the inimitable beauty of Emmylou Harris’s voice. A true legend, just like my Dad was to me…x

This is Emmy’s signature song. No one can sing this as poignantly as she can. All her pain is expressed in this song. She is absolutely devastating in this version.

Phenomenal, that she can sing that good after all these years, with such emotion. Wonder how she can do this song without shedding a tear. Notice how Mark Knopfler doesn't do anything to get in her way, he just adds a little something when it is someone else's song. A match made in heaven. My favorite singer and my favorite musician.

Growing up in Birmingham and living in the same neighborhood as Emmylou I have known and enjoyed her music a long, long time. This song is one of the most soulful tributes ever written about the loss of a soul. RIP Gram. And Emmylou, thanks for everything you’ve given us, your fans.

I don't want to hear a love song I got on this airplane just to fly And I know there's life below me But all that you can show me is the prairie and the sky And I don't want to hear a sad story Full of heartbreak and desire The last time I felt like this I was in the wilderness and the canyon was on fire And I stood on the mountain In the night and I watched it burn I watched it burn, I watched it burn I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham I would hold my life in his saving grace I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham If I thought I could see, I could see your face Well, you really got me this time And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive And I come to listen for the sound Of the trucks as they move down out on 95 And pretend that it's the ocean Coming down to wash me clean, to wash me clean Baby, do you know what I mean? I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham I would hold my life in his saving grace I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham If I thought I could see, I could see your face If I thought I could see, I could see your face Thank you

@@orlaskeffington8170 - Gram had his fatal overdose just after finishing most of his second solo album. He had watched Emmylou become more comfortable and more confident while working together, which made Gram's young wife really jealous - she was convinced that the two were having an affair. It's too easy to imagine - both were SO good looking. But Emmylou was a divorced single mom and was careful; and Gram could easily find easily available sex partners and would've been careful to not mess up the relationship with Emmylou, who was obviously going places. Emmylou wrote this song soon after Gram's death, and it's still one of her best. Her odd path to a music career gave her a unique perspective towards music and the music business, which she was smart enough to use to her advantage. Even if it meant less security, she's stayed independent and unique. She's an American National Treasure. She's lucky she worked with Gram, and she was smart enough to keep her distance - and she can smile at the legends that've generated almost spontaneously about the "Great Love Affair" between them.

Wasn't sure if you were asking or already know. The song is about losing the charismatic Gram Parsons, who died age at 26 after recording two albums with Emmylou. Boulder is where she sang her first concert with Gram, and Birmingham is Emmylou's birthplace.

@@davidroga6508 No, except Boulder certainly was significant as she says she fell in love with him on that rollicking road trip. Otherwise just what songwriters do, I guess. Artistic licence. It is a long way between the two places. For example, people in Waycross Georgia, think Gram was singing about Georgia, not South Carolina, in Hickory Wind. Carolina just sounds better. She truly is phenomenal. Wonder what they would have written together.

@@margaretross9150 Txs for your insight and explanation. They were truly gifted and amazing together. But she is amazing with whomever she sings with. Perhaps it's time to move some Boulders. John 11:39 says “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Despite everything evil Communist Russia has done, I still think Sting was 100% accurate when he sang, “The Russians love their children, too.” Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. By the 1300s, many Roman Catholics felt that the Church had become too worldly and corrupt. Too frequently, Church officials failed to live up to their role as spiritual leaders. For example, priests, monks, and nuns made vows, or solemn promises, not to marry or have children, but many broke these vows. If we read the parable of the sower in Matthew 13 we read that Jesus said a farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up - Anarchy. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root - State Ownership. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants - Corporate Ownership. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop-a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown - Family Ownership. Whoever has ears, let them hear. Anarchism advocates ‘no ownership’ of property and the means of production. Socialism advocates 'state ownership' of property and the means of production. Capitalism advocates 'corporate ownership' of property and the means of production. Distributism advocates 'family ownership' of property and the means of production. “The family that prays together stays together.” - Father Peyton - The Rosary Priest All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. -- Acts 4:32-35

I would rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham I would hold my life in his saving grace I would walk all the way from Boulder to Birmingham If I thought I could see, I could see your face If I thought I could see, I could see your face Thank you Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Bill Danoff / Emmy Lou Harris
