Mark Knopler turned a lousy pub performance into one of the greatest rock songs of all time. The Sultans of Swing are forever immortalized.
@yeahnah6712 жыл бұрын
The beauty of the song’s story is that the narrator kind of ends up enjoying himself nonetheless. He appreciated the musicianship of the band members, he finds something nice to say of each one of them. I think there’s a lesson here.
@jeanlehmann5952 жыл бұрын
The story sounds similar to the diabelli variations by beethoven. Beethoven took an almost unsignificant piece by diabelli and transform it into a magistral masterpiece

I think Sultans of Swing is the only song that I know EXACTLY where I was the first time I heard it... Nineteen years old, riding in a guy's restored Mercedes 350 SL convertible, on a forest road, sun shining through the trees, on the way into town in Jasper, Alberta. A GREAT song and a GREAT memory.

I really like how many of Knopfler's songs have this sort of storytelling background. He saw something or heard something somewhere and crafted a song out of it. We can say his journalism degree paid off.

Loved watching this episode. I love AC/DC and I love Mark Knopfler. I so believe these two guys are friends. Not just for the video, but outside as well: Brian dropped an almost glossed over "I've been to your house" in the full interview. But then they're both race car nuts, albeit that Mark is more into really old racing cars. And they both come from the same part of the UK.
