In the 1980's I knew Dire Straits very well.We went to all the shows as they gave us backstage passes and Mark Knopfler is a really great guy .He is still as talented today as he was back then !!

My goodness, a penny has just dropped. I've realised that I've completely misunderstood the significance of this line until now. In the context of the woman about whom this song was written, it becomes clear that "to the stars above" is a bitter play on words - Holly Vincent was cynically using Knopfler as a vehicle to advance her prospects and always had her eyes on larger fish, bigger stars than he was at the time. What a line.
