Two things i love about this interview: First, I love how this conversation is actually relevant. They're not just talking about something meaningless like famous people usually do in interviews, but they are using their voices and their influence to make people aware of a very important issue. Second, I love how even though they both have been raised Catholic, and Stephen still is, they accept the faults of the institution they have been a part of. It doesn't affect their belief, but that doesn't take away the fact that they are acknowledging the truth and saying that what the Catholic church has done is completely wrong. Thank you for a meaningful interview Colbert and Ruffalo.

All your wonderful words and you fail when it comes to why you put your faith in a dark place ..... put no faith in any man, but into God (whom Jesus Christ said we could lovingly call Him, Father). So why call it a religion .....Jesus said He was one in thought and way with the Father .....therefore it is a thought and way .....support where you are informed about the Father ....read the letter God gave to you. You see it is a one on one thing with God .....understand what it is He says about living in Truth and Justice. There is an ending to the world as we know it. Read and learn. The old Testament (throughout) tells of the end days and Jesus Christ told you how to live that you may have another life after death. You are not a body with a spirit ..... you are a spirit with a body. The body will die and if you are not wise you could experience a death of the spirit. It is not evil to be rich, but it is evil to have ill gotten gains and to live life with perversion as your master.

Nut Suarez, are you naive enough to believe that certain leftist elements in Hollywood don't have an anti-Catholic agenda??? They do. Their bigotry is very much alive and has been since Roe v Wade Jan, 1973. If you look at how movie characters who happen to be Catholic or how clergymen were portrayed prior to this date, you will see a difference, Bing Crosby in "Going My Way," "Bells of St. Mary's," Karl Malden in the Oscar-winning "On the Waterfront," Preminger's "The Cardinal," and all up to Friedkin's "The Exorcist," were mostly positive without being sugary, portrayals. After that, you would find anti-Catholic commentary, whether it be part of the story as in "The Verdict" (1982) or "Priest" (1994); or simply a gratiutious snide remark like an indignant Rob Leiberman in "Norma Rae" saying: "What are you, the Catholic Church?" or Sam L. Jackson quipping "They reproduce like Catholics"(substituting for rabbits) in "Age of Ultron." Like Mark Ruffian, I am left of Center myself. UNLIKE him, I am not of the identity politics faction.

Instead we have infotainment, clickbait, and propaganda disguised as news that confirms our bias.

For so many people out there it actually sullied the place that would have been a solace for the kind of heart break or the psychic damage created by the immediate abuse of the priests. Or the people who now when they go into a church feel guilty for going into a Catholic Church that could allow this to happen because 17,500 children were abused in the United States and those are the numbers from the Catholic Church itself. *It is a terrible story for the Church BUT the only possible way for the Church to heal is for the truth to be known.* This is why I love Stephen, absolutely beautiful!

I think the church needs to go back to the pre-Vatican II days and bring back the valid Mass. There were numbers of priests and cardinals present at Vat II who did not agree to the changes forced on them, and because they objected they were basically kicked out of the Church. The ones who were left were probably the pedophiles who had existed for a long time and liked the "freedoms" Vat II allowed. Many of the priests and cardinals kicked out said that they could feel the presence of Satan in the room. As a Traditional Catholic I can't even attend what is now the Lutheran Catholic of today. Thus, it's not Catholic.

BUT, and this is a big but, the church finally did come forth and we need to move on and keep our faith in Jesus who established His church and told us that He knew there would be problems. Those who are guilty will have to answer to God. Just as prisoners are rehabilitated, so are sinners. God forgives, and so must we.

I am a devout Traditional Roman Catholic. Big difference between that and the Lutheran Catholic of today. After Vat II the Catholic Church strayed and left behind the sacred dogma and liturgy and started up a whole new event completely different from the valid Catholic Mass starting with the big change with Holy Orders which was the sacred ordination of priests. Priests are no longer priests, they are Presiders, thus they do not have the blessings given to them to be able to consecrate the Eucharist. As a Traditional Roman Catholic I cannot attend the Lutheran/Catholic of today because it is not valid.

I grew up in the Greater Boston area. My sister was an alter girl and my father took us to Church every Sunday. When this story broken he stopped taking us and took my sister out of the alter program. He could not sit us in front of a man that was telling us how to lead our lives morally, when he was apart of this injustice. We still went to Sunday school to learn about our faith but that was our only interactions with the church after 2002. My father and his seven siblings were alter servers and had an uncle who was a priest in the Greater Boston area. I wonder the Irish guilty and anger my father must have had. I understand for many people the Church and its clergy are a solace in hardship, but I feel lucky that I was removed from the Church at a young age and was able to learn about God without the corruption of the Church. It is unforgivable that the Church remained silent for so long (at least 60years), and still remains to do very little. This is a global issue.

+Blak It's very simple: he still believes in everything the Church actually stands for, and believes that the sacredness of the institution will allow it to heal from any wounds dealt to it, even by itself. At the same time, he recognizes that official members of that Church, none of whom have some magical "Never sin again" spell cast on them when they are ordained, were flawed human beings who ended up doing terrible things, which in turn were covered up by other flawed human beings. It's the same thing as being proud of your nationality, while acknowledging that awful things your nation has done.

+Blak Colbert's faith has always confused me. He's a kind cynic, but has somehow managed to accept Jesus Christ as the answer. If it keeps him grounded, great, but having a conversation w/ him about religion would be amazing! In some dream world, he invites me to the show so I can ask him about how religion has helped kill millions of people, yet still doesn't realize the men behind this are the same as the ones who wrote the books. #godiseveryone

lenn9o9n See, they're not though. The people who started the Spanish inquisition and the crusades are NOT the people who wrote the Gospels. Those people preached peace, tolerance, mercy, and understanding, not slaughter and torture. It was blasphemy of the highest order to even consider committing such atrocities in the name of God, and none of the early Church would have condoned it in a million years. Not even Paul, and Paul was a pretty wound-up guy.

Investigative journalism is vital to culture....but it seems only if it promotes a certain agenda. That's what infuriates me about actors that talk about the importance of integrity in investigative journalism because they turn the other way when its inconvenient to the agenda, political party, or ideology that they endorse. Hypocrisy is rampant everywhere.

As a practicing Catholic, of course I am someone exposed the atrocities being committed and covered up in and by the Church! My comment was meant to highlight the hypocrisy in Hollywood. They praise investigative journalism and make those stories into films...but only in the cases that would benefit their own political agendas. I don't see Ruffalo starring in a film about journalists who work to expose the corruption of one of his favorite politicians or organizations.

Ardent Fan And you seem to misunderstand me. Whether it's the fantastic film, "All the President's Men," or the one featured in the interview above, objective investigative journalism is vital to our society. What these journalists uncovered about the Church was so important, and I am so grateful that they gave voices to the victims. I am, in no way, criticizing the journalists (or the filmmakers, for that matter) for exposing the atrocities committed by those pedophiles, or the Church for trying to cover it up! I don't know of any Catholic who isn't glad this was exposed. And, in the real world, there are objective journalists (maybe not as mainstream) who work to serve the public and the People at large. I'm just not going to hold my breath waiting for *Hollywood* to make an Oscar-contending film that would go into depth about journalists who would, for example, expose any of the Clinton scandals or those of liberal politicians and/or organizations. I would be curious if anyone could name more than one acclaimed film that was made that followed the journalistic efforts to expose a politician, organization, or government that was liberal and/or more left-leaning. To think that Hollywood reflects the objectivity real world journalists have is, quite frankly, incorrect.

I am a Catholic, and I try to remain faithful to the Church, even the controversial teachings, and I feel pretty anxious and upset whenever the subject of the scandal is brought up. But my feelings and views on the subject ultimately go back to Dante, in which he encounters corrupt clergy in the Inferno, saying "Shepherds like you the Evangelist had in mind when he saw the one that sits upon the waters committing fornication with the kings." (this is a reference to the Whore of Babylon from the book of Revelation) But throughout The Divine Comedy, he continues to speak about how everything about the Church to the core was sanctioned by God, such as apostolic succession and sacraments, and he says he is still bound to them. And on another note, there's a TV movie about the Catholic Church's effort to help people persecuted by the Nazis, focussing mainly on the Vatican official Monsignor Hugh O'Flarhety, (played by Gregory Peck) who saved a great number of people. Pius XII (John Gielgud) explains to him at some point that they are moving the treasures of the Church into the catacombs in fear of Nazi attacks on the city (the Church does act as a museum, too). When the war is over, Pius approaches O'Flarhety and tells him he was wrong about the treasures of the Church, and he said the true treasures are people like O'Flarhety, who will adhere to Church teaching and morality when everybody else has abandoned it. This is pretty much all I have to say.

Raised catholic Italian, 6 or more priests from my parish in little Washington Pa were a part of this scandal: My aunt was a sister of Mercy, I knew the ins and outs of many of the priests as they were frequent visitors to our house and my grandmothers house, where we held mass and we were frequent visitors to many convents. I was married by one priest who was an accessory and had my children baptized by one who left the Church. My Mother was a devout Catholic and lived 18 years with cancer. Not everyone was willing to step up to admit it happened to them. I want more to be done for the families that were all affected by this misconduct. Discipline was good at our school, but we were all brainwashed. The Catholic Church still does not take responsibility for all the $$ they sucked out of their supporters and their hand in causing diabetes at the alter. My story would rock all worlds, both the Church and the medical world. #DivorcingtheChurch #changingmedicine #hiddensecrets #nowineforbreakfast
