As someone who's starting out in documentary filmmaking, but isn't going to any sort of school, your content has been really helpful. I've felt like there's a lot of mystery around how to establish a relationship with your subject, how to navigate the moving parts of your film, etc... Your videos are answering a lot of questions for me & have honestly been a great substitute for film school. Looking forward to hearing more about this project you're working on.

In my short "creator" experience to date (2 years) I often doubt whether Ive deluded myself into thinking I can make documentaries, which really sucks and demotivates me. After using a canon 80D for years I've invested in a new C200, some lenses, some lighting, sound and some other non essential but useful gear. Whenever I watch one of your videos I feel motivated and I get back to being in the moment, simply enjoying what photography gives me, and the joy of making and editing a short video. Im now filming a short documentary on a migrant worker in Africa - a great success story with a lot of difficulties on this journey. Thanks for the inspiration, its exactly what a 55 year old guy needs who took a risk to invest in a sideline job!

Mark, every time I watch one of your uploads, I think it can't get any better or more appropriate for what I'm looking for right now. But then it does!! Ok, I only discovered you about 10 days ago, but wow, this was an incredible find for me, and what perfect timing in my life with the direction I'd love to go. Telling stories of others through film making. But yea, I'm 100% nervous about putting my all into my first big personal project. (but you're getting me to that point! So thanks!)

Totally agree. The more you understand the project you're shooting, the story you're trying to portray and the people involved the easier it will be. Unfortunately in the past, I've seen sent a brief, got my head around what's to be done and then an AP rocks up on the day with something totally different and I'm working to the back foot. Getting into a flow for me anyway is so important as I've found that most shoots have a rhythm to them...

You spoke about establishing shots, textures and the moments you wanna capture of the character. A great part 2 of this video would be about a compact list or “to go” lenses you use to capture this. Instead of carrying 6 or more lenses with you. What would be a good set of lenses you can use for multiple use. To be able to get the shots you need without constantly having to switch and miss those actual moments you’re trying to capture. Great video by the way.

Great stuff, as always, Mark. One of the topics that almost no one talks about that I would like to hear more about is how to cut footage. Do you have an overall philosophy about how to cut footage? Such as relying on the rhythm of music to make your cuts, or the dialog beats of characters to make cuts. How do you do it, and can you offer tips on this topic?
