Back during the great depression of 1928 my Grampa would cast his own 110gn bullets and load 30-06 down for rabbits, and cast 164gn loaded for deer and elk. Its an amazingly versatile cartridge. For the light loads he would put pieces of cotton balls on top of the powder to keep it from moving around and lying loose causing incomplete burns. My dad joked the cotton swabbed the barrel clean with every shot

I have shot and reloaded both of these cartridges extensively for the last 25 years. I can tell you with absolute positivity that there is nothing you can do with a .308 that 30.06 can't do just a little bit better. I like both cartridges just fine, but as a handloader, if I could only pick ONE, it would hands down be the 30.06. It's all about the case capacity.

Same, been shooting them for almost 40 years and I blessed to have a sporterized WWII bolt and a lever action from my father-in-law when he passed, a semi-auto and another “modern” bolt I use. I also bought one for my son and it’s what by Dad hunts with also. Three generations of big game hunting from 125 to 220 grain with that cartridge. IMHO, it can do most anything if the user does their part.

The 30-06 has a history of getting the job done for the U.S. military. Seventy or eighty years ago, match-grade projectiles were hard to get since not too many factories turned them out. Surprisingly, when WW2 and later the Korean War came, U.S. military personnel did not always have a reliable supply of match-grade ammo to use. So they improvised. Many precision marksmen utilized black-tipped AP 30-06 as a surrogate for match-quality rounds and it did pretty well. The top-scoring U.S. Marine sniper of Korea, Staff Sergeant (later Master Gunnery Sergeant) John Boitnott, used his M-1C Garand with a low-power scope (USMC scopes were found in 2x, 2.5x and 4x models) to score a confirmed enemy tango down at 1250 yards. His spotter was a brave man, because he'd jump up on the parapet and draw fire from the communists so that Boitnott would have targets to engage! Anyway, the old 30-06 got it done then, and can still get it done now - whether afield hunting, in competition, or on the battlefield. No army in the world has used the cartridge in many years, so we'll call it retired - but its record is peerless, WW1, WW2 and Korea, plus a host of smaller engagements and conflicts. Modern high-BC projectiles really transform the old warhorse into something special - and propel it into territory formerly the providence of magnum cartridges and rifles such as 300 Win-Mag and the like.

I have both. My 30-06 is an automatic and doesn’t have the same accuracy as my pump. With that being said, I don’t have any issues getting the automatic to group tight enough for hunting. The.308 Remington pump is not as accurate as a bolt but still works great for me.

I just noticed a farm behind the target. I want to build a good 3006. Have for quite sometime. I took an old winchester 670 to the range late in the day today. It made a small raged hole with old factory cor loks at 50 yards. 10 lb trigger and old weaver 4 power that didnt have enough windage in bad light. I dont want to adjust the trigger but i have to and new scope

Seeing how both are. 308 bullets but the 06 can hold more powder in the shell speaks for itself

You will think I'm silly, but I have driven 3. Hours from home to discover my shells are still on the kitchen table. I favor 30-06, 30-30, 12ga, 20ga. Because if a party store in the middle of nowhere has shells, this is most likely what they will be.

Probably shot over 100 deer with both and the deer didn't notice the difference. Shot a 308 Win 'professionally' for 14yrs . The 3006 is great but the 2506 is a better deer taker in my view.

@@markandsamafterwork Good shooting! I reside in NY state. I am not aware of any open land that one can use to shoot more than 800 yards. Most gun/sporting clubs ranges are 200 yards or less. I have been shooting firearms since 1952 and still at it rifle, shotgun and pistol. My latest focus is my Winchester 1885 Traditional Hunter 45-70. Good Luck with your shooting skills.

The 308 and .30-06 are both great rounds with both easily doing about anything a normal hunter would ever need.... but the 30-06 reaches just a little further out... Much like the 25-06 and 6.5 Creedmoore..... Out of the 2, the 25-06 cannot be beat (IMO) out to about 1,000 yards.... and the heavier bullet of the 6.5 starts shining... and if you need to be taking 1,000 yard and beyond shots on game? You're doing some things wrong to be taking irresponsible shots on that game...

i'm sorry to say but my .308 is good to about 850 meter, but the 30 US Cal 30 (30'06) is more accurate out to beyond 1200 meters. both are out of an M=1 Garand, and not an BM-59 conversion in the .308
