Another point is the concealment factor, snipers tend not to last real long when they are found, so having a 20mm Lahti the size of a Prius sitting out in the middle of nowhere probably isnt the smartest move
@theVulcanGuy4 жыл бұрын
But then you have the intimidating factor: who in their rights mind would attack a position defended with a Lathi? Just dropping the bolt causes morale issues in the enemy, to say nothing of the incendiary rounds used to start forest fires. Truly a weapon to surpass metal gear.
@fanta48974 жыл бұрын
Who said it would have to be used by sniper? The argument was just that it could be used as sniper (possibly by the anti-tank rifleman himself, like with the MGs with scopes). Besides, theoretically speaking, if you have 500 more meters of distance form the enemy (because you have a damn anti-tank rifle), someone could easily think that concealment would become less important (you'd be out of effective range of infantry rifles, and you'd be farther away to be spotted as easily). I'm not saying that it would work, I'm saying that someone who would think it would work would argue like this.

If they suppressed machine gun pillbox long enough their job was done. But successful hits, probably owning more to chance/skill combo on shooter side than to gun accuracy were done.

Sure, but my point was specifically about Vasily Zaitsev adding a telescopic sight to a PTRD with the intention of firing through machine gun firing slits in pill boxes and the like. I'm sure Soviet infantry used the frankly devastating fire power of the PTRD and PTRS for destroying and suppressing all kinds of targets outside of tanks. My point was that when an attempt was made to use one in a precision role, it wasn't precise enough, or not precise enough to warrant using a telescopic sight.

Mind you, we're talking about a series that had 7 classes in first game. And fuckers were so lazy nowadays that they couldn't make separate classes for GPMGs, AT rifles and mortars. Resulting in those having no drawbacks and in their dumb spam. Meanwhile you can't do shit to tanks in BF since 1)game doesn't support armor thickness and components on vehicles. You can't get an elevation from upper floor of buildings and just shoot into lightly armored engine compartment ventilation grates. 2)the game has no setting, neither for sides, nor for period. In comparison Post Scriptum had now introduced Battle for France where EARLY WWII equipement can be used. BF uses the same round based lobby system, but devs aren't interested in adding just a few extra models and limiting player equipement choices. So unless Red Orchestra 3 comes out, Post Scriptum seems like best choice. I can't talk about Verdun and Hell Let Loose, haven't tried them yet.

The closest we have is the DMR i guess? But it isn't a dedicated sniper. They'd still be somewhat useful against grunts and jackals and I'm guessing they'd be much easier to carry around than the classic sniper rifle which seems pretty big compared to the average marine. Anti Materiel rifles are still actively used in anti-sniper roles. There was this pesky sniper who always hid behind small holes he drilled in concrete walls. Tanks and aircraft weren't authorized to fire so command decided to lure him out by sending us in armoured vehicles. In the meantime a camouflaged special forces unit trained with Barrett M82s waited for intelligence on his whereabouts. The rationale was that the chance of hitting him with a normal marksman/sniper rifle was too slim, so they specifically requested anti-materiel rifles. It wasn't a direct hit, but from the video we were shown afterwards you could see how the .50 BMG bullet shattered the concrete wall in his face and sent him running. Polish wz. 35 anti-tank rifle - "Ur". Until now, in order to penetrate the armor, the shells had to be not only harder than it, but also as massive as possible. Anti-tank weapons were therefore getting bigger and heavier. Poles followed a different path. It turned out that armor penetration is not necessary! An ordinary lead projectile fired at very high speed hit the armor plate, "stuck" to it and gave it all its energy. On the other side of the armor, the stresses were so great that the armor broke and formed a swarm of debris that injured the tank crew. The bullet itself, after hitting the armor, literally melted in the air - that is, it sublimed and turned into gas. Historical fight: Probably the most famous episode in which model 35 took part was the battle of Zaboreczno, when it appeared as a sniper rifle. The target was a German officer commanding an attack on guerrilla positions. One can only imagine what the effect of hitting a man looked like with a speeding soft piece of lead, flattening on impact. This officer lost whole head. The attack broke down, and the Germans were convinced that they were fighting a unit of Allied paratroopers armed with weapons of an unknown type.

The poles didn't invent the concept of HESH shells lmao.
@marcinos3034 жыл бұрын
@@CassiusGreen I did not write that it was the Poles who invented HESH ammunition. Simply as one of the first, they used a deformable shell without an explosive insert in such a small caliber. W-Z 35 fired 7.92 ammunition, but longer. The rifle itself is not much bigger than the usual Mauser Kar. 98. Note that both the Soviet PTRD and German rifles of this type are more than twice as large and heavier and they use anti-tank, "hard" ammunition. What I meant more about was that in favorable conditions, however, you can use the anti-tank rifle as a heavy sniper weapon in a limited way. Of course, there are other examples of using other weapons as snipers. For example, British and Australian soldiers used the excellent BREN rifle, which was extremely accurate for LMG - all too much. One bullet was inserted into the chamber, and an observer was sitting next to the shooter, and giving the correction, because the shooter himself could barely see the target and shoot at the coordinates. Where Lee Enfield was unable to report, there BREN proved himself as an improvised sniper.
@jackmcslay4 жыл бұрын
Also the impression I get from some cases is that using a gun way overpowered for the task can actually result in less damage than another that's properly scaled for the intended target, because too large bullets at high velocities have very high inertia and will disperse relatively little energy on the target while it overpenetrates. Notable case being Saburo Sakai, who got shot in the head with a 50 cal, managed to regain enough conciousness to fly over 40 minutes back to base, get patched up and ultimately died of old age

The mise en scene gives me the impression that Ian was just casually sitting at his desk with a cup of tea, saw a book on his shelf about the Browning M2 giving him the idea to discuss this topic at length in one take just to kill some time.

You’re right about the video game theory. I couldn’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had about this because of “call of duty” . Call of duty world at war , sniper classes had very basic bolt guns like the enfield etc. that would take usually two shots to kill the enemy but when you got to the highest rank you got the PTRS41 unlocked . Big long monster of a gun with a huge scope that would take down enemies in one hit usually. Then other call of duty games stuck with that progression, beginners got the Remington 700 and the L96a1, but then higher ranks got the Barret and the cheytach intervention.

Lahti L-39 was sometimes used in a sort of sniper role targeting enemy pillboxes or dugouts, especially during the trenchwar period of 1942-1943. It was also used in a counter sniper role with exploding rounds.

I think you’re right about this coming from video game “experience”. In games they keep increasing mobs toughness to force you to grind to keep upgrading your weapons. It starts to get absurd when it takes Twenty head shots with a 50 cal. sniper rifle to drop a “human” enemy.

Yes and no, a few points he made are irrelevant for sniping, and he forgot a few pretty relevant points. First of all, it does not matter that you cannot carry much ammo. A sniper does not get in prolonged firefights. He gets there, takes his shot and tries to get home. Maybe he fires a second or third shot. So a sniper does only carry a few rounds any way. He also forgot about what happens after the shot. That sniper wants to get home after his shot, and an anti tank rifle makes itself KNOWN when shot.

Video games really distort people’s perception of all sorts of military equipment. Hit points don’t exist in the real world. The player doesn’t have to lug the weight around or feel the recoil. They don’t have to try to focus on a target when winded or tired

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Only the most dullest of videogame players think games are realistic. No one thinks you can take 10 bullets in the chest then wait 20 seconds and you're good as new. Videogames don't cause desensitization to violence either as has been shown time and time again. The modern military is full of people who play games and they aren't doing any worse or better than pre-videogames. Honestly, next time you should think before posting such an inane comment. I hope this is a low point for you and you improve in the future to save us all from the confusion such stupidity will instill in us.

10:16 Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is pretty accurate in that any bullet impact to the torso or head, bar the light buckshot at range, will kill. I think a lot of games are wising up to that fact.

As far as I remember, there was attempts to set up PU scope on PTRS/PTRD (I don't have links, that discussion was long ago in LJ). Well, Ian had absolutely correctly described the results - zeroing usually went to shit right after first shot, and scope did not last long enough to make it worth.

I would like to add that anti-tank rounds depend on high momentum to penetrate armor. For that reason you want to be reasonably close because supersonic rounds loose velocity quickly. Hence iron sights are sufficient. If you want to hit a tank from a distance use a tank or other artillery. People that think regular sniper rounds are insufficient: go watch a gel test of a 308 or above fired from a rifle (e.g at Brassfetcher). If one thinks they could survive that, they must be Superman.
@PutesValdovas4 жыл бұрын
In the video he talked about why anti-tank rifles weren't used as sniper rifles to kill infantry, but I am interested in the question why anti-tank rifles weren't used to fire at armour from a larger distance using scopes, and I am guessing the momentum would be a problem too, though an in-depth explanation would be interesting.

See Peter Sennich's classic book, "Limited War Sniping" from way back in the Seventies. The next step after the "tweaked" M-2, was the "hot-rodded" Boyes and PzB 38's and GrB 39's. The usual chambering was the classic.50 Browning. Ammo development followed the rifle development. Not sure when these things really took off, but Mr. Barrett seems to have taken up the challenge fairly early. It was U.S. civilian long-range shooters like the "Fifty Calibre Shooting Association" did a significant amount of work on barrels, recoil-absorption systems, (muzzle-brakes, buffers, etc.), bullets (like machine-turned, solid bronze), precision reloading dies AND suitable presses.

I was watching an interview with a spec ops sniper that served a few tours in the middle east. His standard rifle was chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I do not recall the exact rifle offhand other than it was bolt action. He liked it simply because it was good enough to get the job done and easier to shoot at long range than some other ammo types because of its speed. Seemed reasonable to me.
