When I was a kid I shot a very old 45-70. I couldn't hit anything at 100 yards. I made the excuse of it being old, etc., and made the comment no one could hit hit the broad side of a barn with it! The old man who owned it took it and hit a squirrel on a post more than 400 yards. I had to nurse my pride and my shoulder. YOU sir are a true marksman. Thank you for all your videos, and bringing back an old memory!

I really enjoyed this video. I used to compete black powder long range. I had an A series original Sharps rifle with a 1.375 " heavy barrel. The farthest we shot was 1400 yards. Shooting a duplex smokeless-black powder load. I believe you were Shooting better at 1650 yards than we were at 1400 yards. Well done!

Mark: If you want to see something curious, sprinkle a layer of talcum powder on the top barrel flat and shoot it offhand. It'll show where the barrel nodes are. And that's where you should rest the barrel. It's kind of bizarre but it works.

My 45-70 is in a Marlin 1895 pre-Remington purchase. It is my favorite hunting rifle. It will drop anything I hunt with one well placed shot. It is compact package. It is very accurate for the sub 250 yards I shoot it at.. It does not damage a lot of meat like faster more modern rounds sometimes do at the close ranges I hunt. Last it is just so classic and timeless!

I’ve watched some vids on shooting the Sharps and they say you take a small BRASS hammer and lightly tap the barrel while holding the gun by the stock you’ll hear the difference along the barrel when you find the spot where you get almost zero vibration you mark that area and place it on the rest at that spot. These guys regularly shoot 900 yards.
@andyshubert2 жыл бұрын
Mark I have this very rifle and I highly recommend a leather butt pad. As you probably found out, shooting that thing prone with the stock in your shoulder pocket is downright unpleasant with that pointed, crescent shaped butt plate. I filled the crescent with leather spacers, put on a squared off lace up leather pad, and now it is the most fun centerfire rifle I own.

Not planning on using prone, but thanks for the info, Cheers

.45-70, antique, but so am I and I love it. My Pedersoli Sharps has a period Malcolm 6X with a 32" barrel. What powder are you using, I'm doing standard large rifle primer, a charge of 5744 behind a 540 grain hand cast paper patch Creedmore slug. It is about 1300 15 feet from the muzzle and really carries very well. I have found there to be a sweet spot a few inches back from the muzzle on mine that groups well at 200 yards. You might try 3F black powder, it needs to have it's own lube either soaked into the paper for PP, or a grease cookie over the wad and under the bullet. These are a kick to shoot at any range out as far as the slug will travel, which is further than you may think, 3500 yards leaving the muzzle at a 45* angle. There is much written on the internet that pertains to all facets of the Sharps rifles in various calibers. Keep shooting it, they grow on you.

Keep in mind the 45-120 was not a factory offering at least in the way it's offered today. You see sharps didn't name the cartridges in the conventional way as done today say like the 30-30. Back in sharps catalog the cartridges were listed by physical length. so a 45-70 was listed as a 2-1/10" a 45-90 was a 2-4/10" 45-100 was a 2-6/10" and the 45-110 was a 2- 7/8". the current version of a 45-120 is a 3-1/4" and was never offered by sharps. and that was due to the fact that if you used the correct granulation of powder and a proper drop tube you could get, just barley get 120 grains of powder in the old thin walled 2-7/8" cases.

the rifle would be more consistent with shot placement if you would rest it on the for-end instead of the barrel. resting it on the barrel will cause inconsistent shot placement due to the barrel bending at different pressures bending it. but all in all really good effort on your part. i really enjoy your vid's and i have learned some things to boot.
