14:59 this even checks out perfectly with the maths! F2.8 is excactly 1 1/3 stops more than F4.5. So you need 130% more light to have the same exposure. You reduced your lights from 85% to 40% which is a 125% difference in light :D

I love the form factor of the 18-50mm Sigma f/2.8 lens. I like carrying a pair of cameras on any serious photo trip because the second camera will sometimes save the day, if one camera is damaged. This happened to me climbing a ridge in Alaska. I fell and damaged one camera but, I was still able to shoot since I had a second camera. I am getting a bit old (82 on my last birthday) and weight is becoming a problem. Therefore, the small factor Sony APSC cameras fit my needs and this Sigma lens meshes very well with my A6600 (since the A6600 has IBIS). I wish however, that I could find a small form factor telephoto zoom which would match my 18-50mm Sigma in a two camera setup. I have a 70-200mm f/4 Sony but, being a full frame model, it is a bit heavy for my needs. I also have an APSC Sony 70-350mm but, that is a variable aperture lens and I really want a constant f/stop with a minimum of f/4 and I don't really need the wide range of 70-350mm. I don't absolutely need stabilization in that lens and would be happy to have one constructed of plastic like the Sigma. Presently, I make do with the 18-50mm along with my Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens. The 85mm is relatively light and is a great portrait glass but, I really would like a zoom of somewhere around 50 or 70mm to around 135 or 150mm with a minimum f/4 constant aperture. But, I would rather have a constant f/2.8 built along the lines of the Sigma 18-50mm lens. I think that such a lens could be light enough in weight o solve my problem,

My camera is Sony ZV-E10. My main work is indoor/studio videography. I will also do outdoor videography and photography. My choice is Sigma 18-50 for being lightweight, handy, compact and minimum focusing distance of 12.1cm. On the other hand, Tamron 17-70 has an additional 20mm zoom and Image Stabilization. Since the Sony ZV-E10 doesn't have in-body image stabilization and the Tamron has image stabilization, I think it might be better for outdoor videography and photography. Since I haven't used either of them, I can't judge how effective the Image Stabilization is on the Tamron. Can you tell me which lens should I get for Sony ZV-E10? Reply please 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Excellent review Mark. Always learn something practical and useful through your videos, especially for a newbie like me. As this will be my first zoom lens, I was comparing between Tamron 17-70mm and the Sony 16-55mm to this Sigma 16-50mm lens. In consideration of price, weight, performance(near to Sony's lens), and the ability to take macro shots, this lens is the zoom lens for me. Thanks a lot again.

This video showed up on my feed again. Gotta be honest, I've purchased this lens about a year ago and it's the most versatile lens that I own. It's super sharp, constant f2.8 is amazing and the 18-50mm (27-75mm fullframe) focal range is fantastic. It's a very small lens and also incredibly light. I have only two issues with it, one is with the lens and one is more my own preference. The first issue is that it has no optical stabilization. As a bang for your buck lens, you might be on a budget, and your camerabody maybe doesn't have IBIS. This would mean that you have the possibility of unsharp images at lower shutter speeds. For 40% more in price, at least where I live in Europe, you could go for the Tamron 17-70mm, which has built-in optical stabilization but is way bigger and heavier. If you were to own a ZVE-10 (like many other people watching this channel) it might be scary at first, but something like the A6500 already has IBIS and could be picked up second hand for about the same price as a new ZV-E10. That would already solve a bunch of problems with this for photography, for videography it could help a bit. The other issue is that sometimes I feel like it's too wide at 18mm and not zoomed in enough at the 50mm focal range. I've purchased the fullframe 24-70mm f2.8 lens from Sigma, and use that on my crop sensor ZV-E10. The 36-105mm focal range really suits me and also gives me the possibility to upgrade to a fullframe camera down the line, so I get even more usage out of the lens. If there was a 36-105mm lens for APS-C I would instantly buy it, but this lens is as close to perfection as I could get it. Price vs Quality this is more bang for your buck than the Sigma 16mm f1.4 for me!

16-50mm direct replacement for the kit would have been the ticket for me, and I'd be a buyer.. The macro, F2.8 and Sigma-quality AF are great selling points. Love your reviews Mark 👍. I’ve picked up this lens last week to go with my own little Dougie. I also dress up my ZV with the SmallRig L bracket with a wooden handle. This is a terrific setup. Light, compact, easy to handle. And the IQ is incredible. It’s now so easy to just pickup the camera anywhere all the time. f2.8, versatile standard zoom range, close focusing distance… Despite the lack of OSS, this lens ticks so many boxes. It’s a must have on the Sony apsc system imo.

I use the 16/1.4 on my M43 setup all the time and it always stuns me with its quality. So no surprise that this thing rocks. One thing…focus breathing generally refers to the size of objects changing when you zoom the lens, not going back and forward to a lens at a fixed length. That’s why it matters to videographers rather than photographers.

GREAT Thanks! I have the 16,30 and 56 trio from Sigma and consider them my go-to first choice on my a6000 AND my a7r ( Yes the original bought new at duty free in Dubai in 2010 (?). I currently use the a7r 28-70mm 3.5-5.6 kit lens on both but obviously take a hit on megapixels on the APSC. That kit lens on on the a6000 works as a native lens with the resolution loss is only noticeable when you recompose in post to correct what I should have done when shooting. However the a6000's 24 Mp drops to (variable) an average of 15Mp which is respectable and good for most media but limiting print quality. That zoom is beyond tempting. Thanks Mark.

Thanks Mark for another informative review. Cameras and lenses almost and should have the rule I learned a long time ago back in the early 1980's buying stereo equipment. There was a point made by someone in a publication that explained people were buying stereo equipment backwards, meaning that people would go shopping and their priority was to buy the most kick-ass receiver as the priority and then after that the lighter wallet kicked in and then they bought speakers secondarily. The person who wrote the article told people to buy the best speakers possible first and then the receiver. I am going to apply this ideology to camera equipment. Buy the best lenses first and then the camera body second. Thanks again Mark. I always look forward to you videos.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
very smart. I, myself, am guilty of obsessing over the cameras at times, but it’s the lenses that make the big difference. If you buy a GM lens, you can keep it for 20 years. next year, there’ll be a better camera.

Mark I love your videos. I wish you could test all these things to low light and under more harsh environments (this is a little bit too perfect compared to real life vlogging)
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
Lowlight depends a lot on the camera - and the amount of light a lens lets in is standardized. So a 2.8 will be the same in lowlight as any other 2.8 lens. So, if you want ultimate lowlight performance from a lens, look for the lowest f-stop you can find. The 1.4's from sigma are about as good as it gets (16mm, 30mm, 56mm)
@T.K.9 Жыл бұрын
After dipping through a lot of videos. Definitely on a bind now between the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 or Sigma 16 mm F1.4 haha (for studio video focus/product broll showcase type of work). With the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 more favorable as it indeed got more versatility. Good for a daily travel lens without the need to carry multiple lenses. And the fact that it can do macro stuff. But then again the 16mm f1.4 got its own charms too. And that its now £339 down from £449 while the 18-50 F2.8 is still at its release RRP at £429. Edit: And yes the difference is very clear, As I am watching this on an c1 oled 4K. Same on the other videos I commented before as to how your video examples really showed how powerful the camera's and lenses are. Unlike some other channels who share examples (specially vs smartphones) and their videos criminally insults the very capable camera's they are reviewing horribly. And yes, the videos are really helpful haha The channel is he'lla under rated or perhaps its just that most people might not like how fun your personality is lol with the jokey parts and all.

I had to send the sigma back, but from the tests I’ve seen from others, I would stick with the sigma. smaller and much cheaper.

I am very tempted to get it for my A7IV. 14mpx would be good enough for travel. Light and versatile. Instead of carrying Full Frame Tamron 28-75mm, which is heavy for travel.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
If you are ok with the 14mpx - this could definitely work. Can do macro too.

Thanks Mark, great review. I have got this lens for a week, one problem with this lens is vignetting, like a lot. But otherwise, I really like this one. Made to be paired with my ZV-E10.

Hi Mark, I'm new to cameras and lenses and your videos have helped me a lot recently! I'm looking to pair a lens with my new Sony A7C - would you suggest the Sigma 18-50mm or the Tamron 28-75 Full Frame lens? I'm considering price, size, APS-C crop and reduction in photo MP from 24MP to 10MP.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis9 ай бұрын
I would go with the full frame lens - but also take a loiok at the Sigma 28-70 2.8. It's a bit smaller than the tamron and sometimes cheaper too amzn.to/427hjE7

Hi Mark, I am a newbie to camera's so I don't really understand all the technicalities of these camera and lenses but still i love watching your videos since you make them really interesting and funny. After watching your videos, I am convinced I need to buy the Sony ZV e10 camera but just confused if I should go for the kit lens which comes with ZV e10 or should I buy any other lens? What would you suggest? I have a small youtube channel which is growing so want to upgrade my setup and i make mainly sit and shoot videos (no vlogs). Would appreciate your suggestions.

It depends on your budget. If you are getting a kit lens along with the camera, the lens will only cost you $100 while other lenses will cost hundreds, if not, more than a thousand dollars. I'd say get the kit lens and use the heck out of it, learn from it, find out its limitations, and get lenses which you think will solve the limitations that the kit lens gives you. The reason being, if you want to get anything else other than the kit lens, the next question will be: Which lens to get? This is a question where only you can answer for yourself. You will notice what you need more, once you start using the kit lens a lot. Kit lens at $100, it is a cheap "starting point" and you upgrade from there on. Remember it is the skills, not the gear, that will get you far.

Sorry, I didn’t see the rest of your question for some reason. The kit lens is a good lens to figure out how you like to shoot. I personally recommend the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for a talking head studio lens. It’s amazingly sharp and bright lens and gives you a nice shallow depth of field. The link is in the description of this vid. 👍

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you Mark for the response.. Yeah I may consider buying the sigma 16mm 1.4 lens..

@@gigihanmandarin thank you for the response, I think the sigma is a better lens so why spend 100$ for a average kit lens when I can just spend 250 more to buy a really good one

Hey mark ❤, how does it compare to a full frame sigma art or sony 24-70mm gm ii, Because lenses are investments, I’m thinking about sigma 24-70 art full frame lena on fx30 Do you think the image quality od this sigma 18-50 competes with them?

Thanks for another awesome review. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who have bought stuff because if your vids. I'd say you've already paid for that lens with all the 16mm you've "sold". They should let you keep it✌️ Hey Sigma. I've already bought a 16mm1.4 because of Mark. And now I'll have to get that pretty zoom thingy too...

Looking into this lens for my ZV-E10. I currently have the kit lens, Sigma 56mm f/1.4, and the Sony 55-210 f/4.5-6.3. I’m wanting something I can use as a travel lens and for home videos when our newborn gets here. Is pairing this with the 56mm a good choice for an all purpose lens and a portrait lens? Seems like most people are looking to pair this with the 16mm instead.

Hey Mark, I just recently got this lens because of your video. Did you experience any vignetting when shooting at F2.8 for it? I get some vignetting when shooting with mine at that aperture.

So I’m already sold on the ZV E10. My goal is to use it mainly for music video shoots, livestreams, and event photography.. I was working myself up to plunge in and get the 3 sigma prime lenses to be able to cover all those areas but now I’m thinking this one lens could do it all very well and allow me to buy the 3 prime lenses one by one over time after recouping some of that initial investment.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis indeed I think it will! Although that bokeh on the 1.4’s looks soooooooo good! Did you find it to be that far off? I’ve watched this video like 10 times and it seems to be really close at the 2.8

Hi Mark, this is one of the most helpful video on this lens, especially the studio example. I am a Reviewer and use studio for 99% of my videos. I am using sigma 30mm for my A-rolls and kit 16-55mm for B-rolls since last 2 years and as you mentioned in the video, the distance adjustment and convenience is quite a issue. Now I am looking to replace both the sigma 30mm and kit 16-55mm with this new lens and would like your opinion on it. Thanks.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
this can certainly do that - as long as you don’t use the 30 below 2.8 most of the time. there is a big difference between 2.8 and 1.4. So if you normally use the 30 at 2.8 and above - then this lens definitely can replace it

Hi there! I've been using a Sony Zeiss 16-70 F4 (yes the "infamous" one...) for a long time, lately with a Sony A6400 that I recently sold to get a new 6700: do you think the SIgma 18-50 is an upgrade compared to the Zeiss 16-70? Pro: lightness and F2.8 against F4 / Cons: reduced "range" and no stabilization (but 6700 has built-in stabilization that 6400 had not)
