Agree that pre- teen saw through OP. Bet she has overheard parents talking about OP, with mum warning dad what OP might be up to, and dad telling mum her pregnancy hormones are making her delusional. This guy is too nice for his own good.

@@HealthyObbsession The big tell was when she tried to forbid middle child from playing games that were “ loud and messy “ And she only had praise for the docile child. You’re the babysitter, lady, it’s their house, and unless they are planning an indoor paintball game, let them play what they want. My guess is “loud and messy meant “ Playing Uno with three decks.”

Story 2 in a nutshell: "Hey Reddit, I've built up a relationship in my mind with a happily married neighbor who talks to me sometimes. I'm convinced he's in love with me because I want him to be in love with me. I want to wreck his home by getting him to leave his pregnant wife, but I don't like his kids, so I want to wreck his home even more by getting them out of the picture. AITA?"

And she justifies all of it by assuming the man is tortured because (she thinks) she is more attractive than his wife. I wouldn't be surprised if she couldn't stop herself from smack-talking the wife in front of the kids and that's why they kicked her out.

She’s like a friend who steals your husband cause she wants a one-up on her friend, some women just want to be better and can’t stand when another woman has more then her. My daughter was vocally, unabashedly "bi" (always said without the "sexual") in elementary school. She was quieter and less open about romantic and sexual topics by middle school (which is developmentally appropriate), and then she came out to me as bisexual in 8th grade. I didn't know how to respond to her deep breath and heavy tone. I was like, "Um... okay? Thanks for telling me. I love you. Do you remember that you used to tell me you were bi all the time in elementary school?" She was a mixture of confused and relieved. I've often wondered how I could have done better. I wish I had made it a fully positive experience and not at all confusing or possibly embarrassing.

Yeah right ?!! I was quite triggered by this story. I was addicted to alcohol for about 11 years, i quit last September. Never did any hard drugs, so my insight is probably very limited, but If my addiction taught me anything, it's that substance abuse doesn't fundamentally changes who you are. If you are entitled, self-centered, narcissistic, lying, deceiving, violent or lazy, alcohol may amplify it, but that's fundamentally who you are, and the roots of these behaviour won't stop after you quit, and integrity commands that you face it and where it is coming from, with self-compassion, but look at it straight, with courage. Although the parents were harsh, OP presents himself as mainly the wronged one, and show a lot of bitterness with little acknowledgement of his own wrongdoing, the self-centeredness and entitlement is still pretty strong, years after he quit the substances. In his head, someone had to be blamed, and it will not be him. If he deserves forgiveness for his wrongdoings after paying his dues (and did he ?), so do his parents. Big yikes

The addiction story; I have absolutely nothing against addicts. However, I do hold a grudge against my meth-addicted older half sister. She was a horrible person long before she started the drugs, even as a child. Mind you, we were raised the same exact way, with emotionally and physically available parents. We had a mom who worked two jobs while going to school and still made it home to have dinner on the table every night, and my dad (her stepdad) was a stay at home dad. My parents tried everything to change her behavior, from physical labor to extensive therapy, and nothing worked. My half sister started popping out babies that she refused to raise at 18, instead pawning them off on her husband, who had a job (she didn't work,) on me, or on our elderly great grandma. Well, multiple people called dhs on her multiple times. Two of her kids were taken by dhs and placed in foster care, but she managed to fool the system into letting her back. My ex brother in law finally divorced her, but she refused to follow the custody agreement, and she wouldn't let the kids see or talk to their father. He stopped paying child support after she used one of the payments to bail her alcoholic boyfriend out of jail after receiving a DUI. As soon as my infant nephew was diagnosed with covid, she dropped him off at our house and disappeared for over a week and we weren't able to contact her. She stole money from our great-grandma for freaking doordash orders, and she'd eat all of my groceries that would have lasted two weeks in the span of days. Mind you, this was before the drugs. We called dhs, I even called the cops after my niece told me "Mommy beat (middle brother) with the handle of a flyswatter" and he had marks to match. The cops refused to do anything and closed the case because they couldn't get a statement out of him, since he's autistic and mostly non-verbal. My niece's school called dhs multiple times because my niece was constantly missing school, having severe behavioral issues, and showing up absolutely filthy with matted hair, as well as having accidents several times a day. It took my niece's dance instructor calling the cops after my sister failed to pick my niece up from school, and the dance instructor saw the state of the house when she dropped niece off. My half sister was passed out, high, in her bedroom. The boys, 3 and 1, were eating moldy pizza of the floor, which was covered in human and dog urine and feces. There was no food in the fridge, and the food in the freezer had rotted and gone bad because the house had no power. The place was trashed. The children didn't have a single item of clean clothing in the house, but my half sister had a closet full of clean, high-quality clothes. The baby had the worst diaper rash I'd ever seen, horrible cradle cap, and he had burns from my half sister letting him play with a hot curling iron, which my mom and I found in the children's bedroom when we cleaned the house for the landlord. As soon as my ex brother in law was informed, he immediately caught a flight to our state and filed for emergency custody of his two kids, and it was granted. They're now living their best lives being able to go to the beach, spend time with their dad, and getting to bond with their new baby sister. The baby is with me as my foster son. When we had the two older kids, I had to inform my niece's school that her mom was not allowed to show up to the school, not allowed to contact my niece through the school, was not allowed to get any information on my niece, nor was she allowed, under any circumstances, to try and pick my niece up from school. She was just kicked out of her second halfway home, and she's pregnant with a planned baby, her 8th child. She got pregnant while on meth, and she intended to get pregnant. I'm pretty sure she was trying to baby-trap her ex boyfriend (the alcoholic.) Even now, she ignores her son when he tries to get her attention on the phone, so he wants nothing to do with her during visitation. He calls ME 'Mom" because he never got a chance to bond with her. He was basically raised by me and my great-grandma since he was a newborn. We're all he's ever known. Even now, my half sister blames me specifically for her drug usage. She even threatened to call the cops on me the one time I brought her kids home after she TOLD, not asked, my great grandmother that we were keeping the kids for spring break. She wanted to go on an uninterrupted bender, as I later found out. She still won't accept responsibility for any of her actions. She would leave all three of her kids home alone (all kids are ages 6 and under) so she could go buy cigarettes or drugs. She once cried because our mother refused to leave work to bring her cigarettes. She also cried on the phone and snapped at my nephew to "Shut the hell up" because my great grandma refused to give her anymore money while she was in rehab. I'm no contact with her, and I might have to change my phone number because she keeps getting new phones to contact me. The last time she contacted me, she called my five times in a row after I hung up on her. She still tries to claim that she's a good mom and did everything she could for her kids, but she couldn't even make sure they were bathed, had clean clothes, or fed. My niece would hoard food at my house to take home for her and her brothers. My half sister also withheld my niece's toys and ADHD medication, saying she had to earn them through doing chores she had no idea how to do. I found multiple bottles of my niece's medication sitting, unopened, in my sister's bedroom. As well as my oldest nephew's inhalers and nebulizers that my she refused to give him, despite him desperately needing them. Moral of this essay, some drug addicts aren't worth it. My half sister lost any chance she had to call me her sister, or have a relationship with me in any way. I also stole the dog she left locked in a crate to starve when she went to rehab, and she's not getting that dog back. Next time she tries to call me, I'm simply going to respond "I don't associate myself with meth-addicted child and animal abusers. Never contact this number again." I also recently found out that she had been inside my home while I wasn't there, and nobody else was home. Things of hers that she left behind when I kicked her out (another story for another time) were missing, and my great grandmother's credit card number had been used and hundreds of dollars were missing from her account when that happened, and that was a new credit card after the first time my sister got her card information. No idea how she managed to get into the house, since we lock all of our doors, and the windows can't be opened from the outside since they automatically lock when the windows close, and we don't open them at all. The kids are much happier away from their mom, and the dog is finally learning to be a dog. She had no idea what dog toys were, would cower and stop eating if I went to touch her after putting her food down, and she's still terrified to have a collar put on her. My sister had a shock collar on her and would shock her for fun, as well as to keep her in the crate when the door was open. That poor dog was traumatized, and I have no idea why someone would shock her like that considering she's incredibly well-behaved and listens to verbal commands easily, and has picked up on new tricks quickly.

Sorry you went through this. I've had problems in the past, but never ever made it anyone's problem but my own. My friends knew, and hoped I'd stop, but they never saw me using, I never stole, and never ever thought it'd be OK to have my addiction bring down anyone else, because only my own choices led to it existing. Sure, I was tricked into using what I got addicted to, but I put myself in a place where that was a possibility. Your sister sounds awful and I'm sure it's been traumatic. Far too many people use addiction, especially with stimulants (coke/meth), to justify, rationalize, and play down their awful behavior. She's doing that. I'm not saying I'm some bastion of morality, but what I can say is that I'm proof you can keep your own addiction to yourself, and simply work harder to account for it. There's no reason to bring others down because of YOUR own issue, and you'd only do that if you were already a shitty person. Being an addict doesn't make it OK to harm others, in any way. You made the decision, that's on you.

Im adopted & I was a terrible child, but not because of my own doing, just because of trauma my mom out me through. I have struggled with my own addictions. @@actuallynotsteve unfortunately, she was a horrible person long before the drugs. She made her poor ex husband miserable, and put our mom and my dad through hell. She even lied that our parents were brutally abusing the both of us, which never happened, and got the cops called on my parents. Luckily nothing happened, but she bragged about it. She was pissed that she'd gotten grounded for stealing the rent money and that was how she retaliated. The drugs just made it worse. She even claimed her dead child on food stamps for two years. And when she had a stillborn child a couple years later, I called her and asked her how she was feeling, and her exact response was "Eh, I don't care. I'll just make another one." I can empathize with this. My eldest sister died from an overdose after years and years battling addiction. It was hard because when she was sober, she was one of the most loving, fun people to be around. But as soon as she got back off the wagon, she would steal from us, start fights when we wouldn't support her, all kinds of crap. I feel like I mourned the loss of who she was decades ago, and when she died, I wasn't even upset. I was just glad she was gone. Near the end, she tried to steal a lot of money from my father, who had late stage Alzheimers, and I will never forgive her for that. He was the only one who genuinely believed in her.

When I came out to my parents, realistically I knew they'd be fine with it but it was even before gay marriage was legal here in the US, and of course kids at school were terrible. So I told them and they just kinda looked at each other and smiled and said "Okay." And then the Jehovah's witnesses rang the doorbell and I burst out into tears. I'm sure that kid and her parents will look back and laugh about it just like we do one day.

Yes, except mom and dad. I literally cannot fathom telling a child I carried, raised, and saw through all their years that I no longer love them because of drugs. I could say I don't like you right now, I can't be around you right now, I'm very angry with you, etc. but I do not love you? No. Loving others is a choice and not a feeling. People choose not to love someone. They choose not to stand by their kid/spouse/friend. They say shit like, "I'm not in love with you anymore" when what they really mean is, "I choose not to love you anymore". Not knowing the difference is the hallmark of emotional immaturity.

1:38:45 I know how this feels lol, not with my partner but with other people in my life. My bff NEVER says "I love you" just because. Her bf of 7 years has heard it maybe 20 times, but she doesn't say it because she is indifferent. For her, the emotions that come with "I love you" are so strong, they kind of scare her? So when she can muster the courage to say it, it's obviously like a meteor smashing to earth. Ironically I didn't know this until her bf pointed it out (playful arguing at this point) that she said "I love you too" back to me before I left the state for school, but he hardly ever hears it. Then, with my fiance's grandpa: he is a stone-cold man who commanded his family with a flick of his wrist. He was very reserved with his feelings, but the moment I met him, I was told I love you within months, whereas my fiance has only heard him say it twice EVER.

However, my girlfriend at the time decided Wednesday was the perfect time to come out, despite us both knowing that her dad would freak out. So basically her dad was going to call my parents so I had to call my mom crying on the phone to tell her because I didn't want someone else to give her the info first. She was out running errands and casually said "oh I already knew honey, and your father and I both love and accept you and your gf already" We still went and got hibachi lol and my parents went to a pride parade without me that year and got us some rainbow pins because I was stuck at work :)

If this was a story of a junkie parent that turned their life around but the children still didn’t want anything to do with them Reddit would’ve 100% told them to shut up, sit down, and leave their children alone to heal at their own pace and the parent is not entitled to their hurt feelings.

The last story, I'm so sorry for the OP. Many young marriages don't last. If you find the right one, it will. Now that doest mean that there won't be disagreements, but you will find ways to resolve them. Finding the person that is your friend, companion and the one you love is so much more important that just settling. My husband postponed our wedding until after I turned 20, as he wouldn't marry a teenager. Thankfully. Our marriage is still going strong after 40 years and I wouldn't change anything. Good luck and have a great future with your future love. Note: Not all marriages are successful and I totally realize this. Two of children went through divorces and came out the other side stronger and more confident in their own abilities, both went on to get further education to support their families and have children that they are raising to be confident, successful young adults. The other 2 have strong marriages, that I hope will last, as we never know what the future may through at us. I am proud of all 4, but will never step into, offer advice (unless specifically asked), but always be there as a sounding board.

First story : Absolutely NTA OP. Your mother is a push over and can't say 'No', and that is what has put her in a difficult position, not your refusal to be the servant for her entitled siblings. The only way you can have a holiday with your mother alone is if you do all the arranging, in your name and paid for, initially, by yourself and you keep secret the details of were you are going, staying etc. The risk you run is that your mother may decide not to pay her share or may bail on you at the last minute because her siblings want the free servant as well. Then you would have to invite a friend, but, at least, you would not be a manservant on your holiday.
