If you double tap the camera control, that’s how you cycle between camera setting types (i.e. you don’t need to touch the screen at all if you master camera control)

The inclusion of the Camera Control on the regular 16 and 16 Plus was the main reason I upgraded to the 16 Plus over the 16 Pro Max. I wanted the fun color (in my case, ultramarine, though my wife’s teal looks superb), and I wanted a phone that visibly looks new, without sacrificing on the main camera features that I want/use.

I’ve gone from an IPhone 14 Pro Max to the IPhone 16 in Ultramarine. I love the size and the color. It’s perfect. I never used the telephoto lens on my 14 Pro Max. I prefer to take Macro photos. If the 16 Pro would have been available in a beautiful color, then maybe I would have chosen that one. I’m really happy with my phone and am not missing my Pro Max.

I purchased the iPhone 16 coming from the 14 pro and the only thing that I noticed right away was the refresh rate no pro motion. Overall this phone was picked over the 16 pro because I was tired of looking at the same device basically from the back since the 11 pro. I like the camera lay out and device still being at 6"1 and lighter. The black with a stone gray case looks awesome.

60hz though is yuck in *late 2024. I mean, are we going to be looking at 60hz screens for the better part of the decade. People lambast Samsung for iterating on their foldables but this is the most egregious example of that I've ever seen.

I suppose it's more noticeable by someone like you because the amount of phones you get to review (Great reviews by the way) and they all have that 120hz rate , but honestly the only time I notice it (bought the iPhone 16 + by the way) is when I'm scrolling through a long read - even then I slowly scroll through whatever I am reading. but as you say each to his own. But what hasn't changed is my opinions on your reviews, really great and informative, and your not afraid to voice an opinion (Good or Bad) keep up the good work.

Mark, I really respect your reviews and yes, it is annoying that Apple hasn’t updated the screen to at least 90hz, but really it’s not going to make much difference in the performance of the phone. Some reviews have even stimulated this and some people have even, whilst trying to save battery draining on the iPhone pros. Have even changed the setting back to 60 hz and after awhile you’r eyes just get used to it anyway. Just like changing the picture settings on a TV from the standard mode to another mode, jarring at 1st to be sure but after around a day or two you hardly ever notice Just a thought. Keep up the good work though really like your reviews Case in point type changed more picture TV mode on standard I’ve been using for ages, the expert picture modes, and have a look back preferences, I suppose Each to his own

Each to their own, absolutely. But this phone should absolutely have a faster refresh rate in 2024; it lags significantly behind all of the competition in that regard.

Good video. I like the fact that you literally are not judging people for buying the iPhone 16 base model .. let’s face it there is a lot of phone snobbery out there by tech reviewers. Personally , having switched from iOS to Android at the same time as you did, I still find the iPhone the easiest to navigate and that’s why it sells. My iPhone 14 Plus is still going strong and with iOS 18 is as up to date as it can be so , with apple there is probably less need to upgrade than most Android phones . But that’s why I love Android.. and in particular Samsung ( ultra) .. for anyone wanting more from a device, Android is the way to go. Oh one more thing .. the camera button pales into insignificance compared to the one on the some 1v and 1vi

Great take on the 16. I always had an iPhone pro phones but more and more I’m seeing that all these updates are much more than I need. I will be upgrading from 14Pro to the 16 Pro max. The thinner and lighter designs of the Pro Max are much easier to handle than before. I agree the colors are much more exciting.

The 60Hz display reminds me of making the BMW 1 series front wheel drive. Only geeks like me will care, but virtually everyone would notice the difference, even if they can’t describe it. BMW did it after asking owners and yes, they didn’t know or care, but of course that’s just like me not knowing the tech in my washing machine, but I appreciate the results.

Lol, you’re making me doubt myself! I tested the 16+ yesterday and found scrolling didn’t get that fragmented experience from last years 15 due to the 60Hz, and found it as bright and snappy as my 120Hz Android… and put it down to the chipset this year and the general up-speck for the basic model. But now you’ve brought up how it’s definitely there, I’m going to have to check again😂. Maybe it’s the + over the standard, who knows. I need either the plus or max these days… when we get to the certain age of requiring reading glasses… Look forward to your reviews on both devices😊

16 Better battery, better camera, better chip, no overheating like on the 15. Overall the 16 takes the win. Ofc If u want a better display, 120Hz. Go for the 15 pro. But I think the 16 is a better choice (benchmark, etc, 16 takes the win)

Where I'm based, new boxed, unopened iPhone 16s and iPhone 15 pros are the same price, so in terms of features that are relevant to me ( cameras, mics etc is realistically not important to me, they'r nonyl "bragging specs") it's a choice between a ProMotion screen or better battery-life and better thermal management.

i LOVE that teal! I should have hold off on upgrading last year and buy the 16 plus 😬 Currently its the best future proofing option. Coming from a 7 plus iphone I love my 15 Plus white blue phone. No regrets! 😝 Living in the Caribbean, I took what I can get when family was travelling to the US. I don't regret my choice in the 15 line up. The only temptation for me, I run a 14 Pro Max in Space Black, is the 16 Pro. I come to like 120hz and I wouldn't mind the better camera sensor and zoom. Also the slightly larger screen than the standard. That said, my 14 PM does everything I need it to do and does it well. I just don't want to spend the $$ anymore. Apple does need to move to at least 90hz on the standards. Good vid Mark!

I have the 15+ which I bought to try the larger size without the expense of a proMax. It's good. The changes to the camera app in iOS18 though take a bit of getting used to. The the trade-in value on a 16/16pro hits the pocket a bit, being around 50% of a new one. So, I'm thinking my next upgrade will be to the promax, 19 or lower, depending on what surprises AI brings before then. I went from an XR to the 15+, so the 19 seems good for a 4yr ownership. Owners having an 11/12 and older are falling in the 5/4yr respectivly upgrade window.

Neither for me. I was on the 14 pro max and just was not sold on giving apple money on the promise of apple ai coming in march and not at launch. I've switched to the Z Fold 6 and I'm liking it after two weeks. Wish it was a tad larger, but I no longer carry my ipad Mini with me since this basically is a mini tablet. :)

Watching this as I wait at AT&T to trade in my 15 pro for a 16 plus. I miss the bigger screen and battery life but I don’t care at all about the cameras beyond that they can take a nice picture. I can upgrade every year so this will hold me over till the ultra 17 comes next year hopefully.

Genuinely not bothered about refresh rates tbh. Had all sorts of phones - flagships, mid-tier etc - some with incredible rates (Android), some without (Apple). Really doesn’t affect my life or overall experience. Current iPhone 12 mini user and am going for this standard iPhone 16 as an upgrade.

Not sure I like the "camera control" button - I can see me always opening the camera when I don't want to, just by holding the phone and bumping the button by mistake - that would become really tiring, very fast. Not sure if that button can be deactivated...

When mobiles first came out , they had no camera , nobody asked for one or wanted one , but they started adding them anyway , then started upgrading them , and increasing the price ……now cameras are here , one that takes a nice picture is all most need …. So I’d say , if you are in the market for an iPhone , 99% of people need a 16 , Apples marketing is why people buy the pro ….

Good review, thanks. Sorry to be picky, but the “x” in 5x, 2x etc isn’t an “x”; it’s a multiply symbol. The zoom level is multiplied by the number given. As such, it’s pronounced “5 times”. The other thing is that weight is a big deal for many people. The 16 Pro is just too heavy for me. I’ve felt the same way about all the “pro” iPhones.

The 16 is for ppl who want to own the most recent phone with current gen technologies, b e s i d e s 120Hz and + 5X zoom. Other than that very similar to the 16 pro. I’ve also seen tests where the iPhones perform the same in terms of battery life so I’m probably gonna go to 16 regular just cause I can’t justify the almost $500 more with tax to get the phone I want with trade-in.

Was about to reserve an iPhone 16… the fact that AI is not on it, the fact that its main attraction is not even available yet is off putting. Don’t know much about phones but when a much promoted new gimmick like AI is coming along, I tend to go for the second gen product that incorporates it rather then the first, or in thei case the testing ground.

Would I buy the iPhone 16? If the price is right, after selling my S22U, yes. Why? 1. I would like a smaller smartphone, since I already use the laptop and TV for work, streaming etc. 2. I practically have two options: base model iPhone or base model S-line Samsung. But I would prefer an iPhone because: - has a better battery efficiency. For android I have practically only 1 option, the S23, which has a Snapdragon chip (in EU S24 has Exynos). But the S23 is older and the SW will be updated for a shorter period than the iPhone. - where I live most of the people uses an iPhone. For this reason you can find more easily, not only accessories, but also iPhone parts if a repair is needed, and also the repair shops are more capable of repairing iPhones (have done more practice). I still have an iPhone 7 and an iPhone XR which have had the screen, and/or battery replaced. 3. I don't care as much for the screen refresh rate and "Pro" camera features. I've had a Samsung S22 Ultra and in 2 years I've never kept it in 120hz setting, until recently. I live in Europe and for this reason I have the Exynos version. At the beginning the battery wasn't great with 120hz on, but after 2 years of SW updates they've improved it. Still, even though now I have turned that setting on, I must say that it's not a big difference vs 60hz. Scrolling feels faster, but watching videos it's the same because it depends on the video settings (like this one which has a 24fps).

Same to me. I look at the package and not a single feature. My son has a 15 Pro and I tested both refresh rates. It is not a deal breaker. I don’t play games and I don’t need to scroll fast etc.
