You have a wonderful land, you need to build more insect hotel for Osmia bees, with holes minimum 10-15 cm deep and 10 mm diameter (most important), Osmia bees are the best early pollinator for 3 first week of march, they assure tree's fruit production at their maximum. Osmia are easy to reproduce and multiply as long as they have holes to nest, it's exponential, and they stay in the same area indefinitely.

Thankyou! We've included many insect hotels (you can't always see them in the videos) and you're right. They provide the perfect habitat for this species. Pretty much every insect hotel we hang up, gets all their holes filled up with the eggs of these bees. Amazing to observe!

More small farms need compost making employees, that's what I call my worms in my vermicompost system. breakdown takes a couple months and you can feed some of the extra worms to the chickens to help with egg production.

@TheDutchFarmer
@TheDutchFarmer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bob, thank you for the kind words! This channel is specifically putting out content to help educate and support new, beginning and aspiring farmers get started with a small scale no dig market garden. I think that the integration of chickens (and animals) is an important aspect of the small farm, but as of now the focus will be mainly on the production side and business side of market gardening. Maybe in the distant future I'll move a bit more away from this and include videos specifically about chickens, or other possible enterprises on the small farm.

Hi Moreno, I absolutely love your videos. They are so practical and realistic. One question I had was when you did the brilliant video with your actual revenue numbers, the one thing I was wondering is if you could provide a couple of examples of volumes of crop to make the revenue you made, such as how much spinach you produced and what was the percentage of revenue this represented? Thanks again, you are amazing at what you do 🙏🏻

If you are going to continue growing peas there yearly, Either grow companion plants that consume lots of nitrogen, or remove half the compost every 2-3 years. Otherwise you will get a build up of nitrogen and after year 4 you will start getting lots and I mean, lots of leaves and no pods. Also,with ginger, while you can cut them as small as 2" I would recommend leaving as much of the ginger as possible, even if it means throwing away some rhizomes as the more of the root there is, the faster the new plant will develop roots and grow. The initial cost will be higher, but you will be creating a crop sooner.

In our region people are probably more hunters and meat eaters, but I think this is slowly changing thanks to people like you. I'll look forward to seeing how your ginger turns out - I did try some last year, but it refused to sprout. I'll try again this year using your method. May I ask how you make up your potting mix? Many thanks for another informative video!!
@TheDutchFarmer
@TheDutchFarmer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew, thank you! Maybe the ginger you bought had been treated with growth inhibitors? Or didn't contain any eyes/wasn't as fresh anymore? I don't make up my own potting mix, but instead just buy high quality pre-made potting mixes in bags. I'm not sure about the exact ratios of the ingredients, but it includes compost, vermicompost, peat and a couple of smaller ingredients... all organic of course ;)

Thanks again for the great video : in your home composting system, how do you time the handling of a pile from 1st area, then 2nd then 3rd? I mean if you have a constant, daily supply of fresh organic matter, don't you have multiple different stages of decomposition that pile up ? How do you "regroup" all this in large enough quantities to make a heap and handle only 3 main stages? I hope the question makes sense :)
@TheDutchFarmer
@TheDutchFarmer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nicolas! Depending a bit on the season, we get quite a lot of organic matter indeed. Most of it is devoured quickly by the chickens. As soon as the first pile is high enough and occupies the entire space of section 1 (which, depending on the season can take a bit of time), I move it into section 2. All fresh stuff from that point on will not be mixed in again. Of course in section 2 there will be a mixture of organic matter, some broken down, others pretty fresh. The bird activity in combination with the bacterial and fungal activity will continue to break this down. As soon as it's broken down enough and we can barely recognize what it was, we move it into section 3 - to aerate the pile and for the final composting process. Honestly, we don't use real rocket science here, but simply look at the conditions of the pile: the quantity and how much of it has broken down. Hope that makes sense! ;)

Does the ginger need a lot of light? And where do you get the trays? Regarding the compost; it is way more economical viable to let it be created by animals (deepbedding system) and use for example a tractor to turn it.

Hey Moreno! Great great great stuff you are showing us here. I know you’re busy growing stuff but can’t wait to see how your farm is progressing late April. I recently took on two plots on an allotment site and need so much your advice! BTW - never seen trees used in that way on an intensive cropping vegetable farm, only with perennials underneath. Could you explain a bit more in details how the two parties work together? And things like competition for light, nutrients and water actually becoming an advantage, the drip line...

@TheDutchFarmer
@TheDutchFarmer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Prakash thanks! To be honest, the corona virus doesn't impact our farm all that much. We have a large variety of wholesale customers and online distribution customers. These are the customers that are booming at the moment. Whilst the whole world is on 'lock down', these are the only stores left open and the produce they sell are in high demand. It's pretty clear that many farmers have to change their marketing and business approach, and move their produce from restaurant and farmers market sales, to more subscription based marketing, online sales, and wholesale. For every problem there's an opportunity.

I use actually two different ones. We grow a couple of varieties and some seed are smaller/bigger than others. For the bigger types we use F-24, brush up. For the smaller spinach seed; X-24. If you only get one, I would take the F-24. This will also work for the smaller seeded varieties of Spinach. You'll only have to change the settings of the brush depending on the size of the seed.
