Fourwheel Trader - Car depreciation analysis

Depreciation is one of the major costs that comes with owning a sports car and some models are notorious for crazy high depreciation rates, costing owners tens and thousands of dollars. The Porsche cayman is one of them, but even in this market, there are some premature sign of cracking price trends.

The Porsche Cayman market softened slightly compared to february but that it still very much belongs to the group markets that outperformed the general market. If you are shopping in this segment and care about depreciation, it is hard to ignore the cayman. It is one the most financially savy purchases you can make. Values decreased by an average of 2.7% excluding the GT4 RS and this is less than the market average. GT4s were even flat during last year, after they bounced back from correction in the second half of 2022.

ICE Cayman values only going up in the future once Porsche stops ICE and moves to 100% EV Caymans. I’m sure the EVs will be faster but they will never provide the same driving experience!

I’ve been watching the Cayman market for 3 years and this is spot on. Carried over inventory is spiking in 2024. Even still, dealers aren’t cutting prices on 987.2s. I’m fairly certain when they sell after 90 days, they are being discounted at the negotiation table, but not publicly. This is keeping prices artificially flat when they are actually coming down. 987.1s continue to drop due to IMS/bore scoring scares. A local guy listed his 2006 CS for 30k but offered to sell it for 26k when we met up. 987.1 inventory is going up and private sellers seem motivated to make a deal. Here are my 987 market evaluations in 2024: 987.1 base = 20-25k 987.1 S = 25-34k 987.2 base = 24-32k 987.2 S = 32-45k As always, transmission, mileage, color, options, and overall condition play a significant role in valuation. I am also seeing an uptick in 987.2 R prices in recent months. It may be the season, or may be a trend change, but Rs are trending up towards 90k.

That was an interesting analysis, I have had the good fortune to own a lot of good sports cars and still own some great sheet metal and carbon fibre, I did however keep a 981 GTS, fabulous engine and sound track, excellent blend of power and balance - just a great deal of fun, whilst having a high quality interior. All that is good about Porsche in one complete balanced package.

@@zackvandenhouten6067 as pure? The 718 GTS turbo is better than the 4.0 honestly. More usable torque down low and feels snappier/quicker. That flat 6 engine ain’t worth $30-40k more just because it sounds better to the so-called purists lol. A Porsche is a Porsche.

@@darrylgarcia9147 I don’t disagree right now. My argument is that the hybrid will be better at the positives of the turbo. The naturally aspirated engine will almost undoubtedly hold its value better long term compared to the turbo (and the hybrid!)

Here the prices for used cars is going up up and more up... In 2002 I did pay 500$ for a 1976 model Ascona B with 90hp, now similar car sells for 20000 to 40000$, and is is same with many other old normal family cars. Porsche prices seems to be same if you buy a 10 year old or 20 years old one, older then that and the prices go up.

@@fourwheeltrader What I have noticed having owned quite a few Porsche on two continents is they tend to follow similar patterns but the term can vary. The Porsche sales model is to develop supply into a market with pricing at a level that market will bear. You are very safe if you buy any NA GTS and GT div. sports cars. The other point to note owners tend to hang on to GTS/GT div. cars, largely because they're very good drivers cars and yet very useable.
