Hey I have a question for you on selecting hi utsuri fry. I have a 100,000 fry spawn of three week old fry that are doing amazing. They are the true Hi Utsuri brood stock. The spawn produce 25 percent brown/ black fry. The rest are more yellowish due to the baby brine. At what size do you do first culling and what to look for
@MarkGardnerNTVfree4 жыл бұрын
Normally Kuroko selection would be done a couple of days after hatching and only black fry selected
@TopGFishingMedia4 жыл бұрын
Mark Gardner yeah that’s what I figured. What will the yellow ones end up being, bad quality HI Utsuri or not Utsuri at all? Either way, it looks like these are gonna take a long while to sort lol. Luckily the original Kuroko are still black and the others haven’t turned yet so I can still cull them soon
@MarkGardnerNTVfree4 жыл бұрын
Higoi, aka muji, some may get black, indeed I’m sure they’ll throw plenty of shimmies, however not decent quality black nor well patterned.
@TopGFishingMedia4 жыл бұрын
Mark Gardner yeah at least 25 percent are black so hopefully I’ll still have at least 25,000 fry left after Kuroko Culling

Hi fantastic video but can i ask you a question why did you add milk, as this is really bad, Milk is dangerous to fish because it ends up depleting the oxygen in the river or ponds , causing fish to die. ... “While milk may not seem as harmful to us as sewage or other pollutants its effect on fish populations can be devastating, so how does it not cause any problems to the egg's in fertalization
@MarkGardnerNTVfree4 жыл бұрын
Gaz, I’m unsure how much is your question, and how much is a copy and paste. I used about 1/2 pint maximum, so itself hardly an impact on the environment. If you’re asking why it doesn’t affect the eggs in this situation, I can’t answer, really don’t know
@GazsKoiPond4 жыл бұрын
Mark Gardner Half was my ? And half was a copy and paste saved me typing, the reason I ask was While I was in the fire service for 15 years we were always warned about the possibility of milk lorry / tanker been involved in a road traffic accident & to make sure none of its cargo entered the water ways, hence why I wonder how and why it didn’t effect the development of the fertile eggs as they absorb oxygen through the egg case from the water, it was not an environment worry or anything like that, I was just wondering how it didn’t harm the eggs. Sorry I feel as if I should not of asked 😕
@MarkGardnerNTVfree4 жыл бұрын
I suspect it’s due to volumes and timescales involved. The milk was diluted 1 part milk, 8 parts water and then only used for 1 hour, and all the time air was being pumped into the water. If milk went into a waterway after an incident like you describe then of course there’s potential for that milk to stay in the water much longer term and ‘go bad’ and strip oxygen. In most waterway pollution incidents I understand the first course of action is to aerate the water. No problem with asking!!
