It must have been multiple dives. As an 18 year old I did a free dive at a mountain lake in New Hampshire, I think or Maine. It was August, our hottest month. After hyperoxygenating I swam down for what seemed an eternity. I did so in a slow, measured way keeping track of the time so that I would be able to make it back to the surface. My goal was to bottom out. Naturally I was curious just how far down I was so I stopped mid-descent and looked up. The waves seemed tiny, like ripples half the size of printed commas. It seemed like dusk altho it was mid-morning. I noted that the sun was paler and greatly reduced in diameter 🌞 like so. I continued down, worried about my time. As I paddled I noticed that it was black around me - no real light. I looked up again and was reassured to see the sun. The ripples were now invisibly small and the under surface was a big oval of light. I was starting to worry about ascent time but I continued down. Finally my hands grasped some slimey black muck I assumed was the bottom. It was so dark. I wanted to grab a rock to bring back to the surface as proof I made it. I felt something solid and just grabbed it. My hands were so numb because the surrounding water was like ice - during Summertime! Holding on to my little memento I headed up with long powerful strokes, releasing air from my lungs in spaced bubbles. I was worried about my history of ear infections and equalizing pressure. It gradually grew lighter and warmer and I could see the under surface. Finally I breached the surface and boarded the floating dive platform. Sitting on the warm wood I was surprised how relaxed my breathing was. Excitedly, I looked down at my souvenir and was surprised by what I saw. It was a broken beer bottle - a long neck - probably discarded by my fellow teens during one night of sneaky drunkenness. Something else though alarmed me. I noticed a deep gash across my palm. Serious enough to need stitches, I thought. BUT NO BLEEDING! I reasoned that my hands were so frozen that the blood flow was decreased enough to make bleeding impossible. I felt no pain whatsoever, just numbness from the cold. I must have gone deep enough to hit that layer of perma-cold that exists year round, hot weather or not. I had been an experienced snorkeler, starting age nine. Also my lungs were in training all summer. So I had come quite prepared. That was definitely the deepest free dive I ever did, then or since. I hope to get back into it again someday. Also become a PADI certified SCUBA diver.

I practice breath holding, and my record is in excess of 5 minutes. Of course there are a few differences. For one thing, I sit perfectly still and relax every muscle so I don't use up oxygen. But most helpful is breathing pure oxygen for about 10-15 minutes before I try. lol. Yeah I know, it's cheating. I was at the dentist and having some fun. But without oxygen, I can still hold my breath for 2m30s. Again I never recorded an exactly how long that was. So, give or take 20 seconds.

1. i remember it was like 800 for beginner and 1,600 for certified dive experience (both in AED dirhams ). 2. yep, in the website it said “Yes, shallow dives (0-30 meters) will be conducted on nitrox 32 (oxygen enriched air) and all dives deeper than 30 meters will be done on mixtures containing helium (triox or trimix). Courses in diving with these gasses will be available.”
