I bought this game myself and I found a few things that might help. Look for three things along the road. Rest stops can give you some extra money. You can pick up hitch hikers to get some extra money. Along your map you'll see some fuel stations along the roads. Stop at those and I THINK you'll fill up for free. Searching dark alleys in towns can get you some money and fuel too, but risky.

I've found that the game favors the more expensive items, though unfortunately it doesn't change the ending much. The only real change to the ending is if you bring only cheap, shitty items, or don't get everything you need.

Played it a bit while ago. Decided to put something like "Remove the curse". Got surprised, wish lighted up blue rather than red, and it seemed like it was even harder than on vid, cars everywhere and shit. Although, won the game with last sorting puzzle, and seemingly got the good ending, as it said that whole that curse with wishes got removed. As for items, they do matter. There is certain pattern to them, if you get best items possible, you will have more time on the last puzzle, as I understood ritual is used to barrier the dark forces and acts as a shield and time is basically how long it will hold. Money issue is solved by grabbing people at side of road with their arm out, as they ask for a ride. Idk if there is certain town you need to bring them to, I brought them to whichever was on way, and when you enter the town, they leave the car and pay you.
