If you have a spare wire clothes hanger handy you can make a handle to help remove the wash plate. Cut the twisted part off the hangar. Make a 90 degree bend on each end of the hanger. Feed the bent ends into holes on opposite sides of the wash plate. Use holes toward the outside of the wash plate so you have room to use the hammer. Gently pull up on the hanger while taping the wash plate bolt with a hammer or mallet. If you pull too hard the hanger ends will straighten out before it enlarges or tears the holes. The hub was my issue, teeth were ground off. Your video helped make quick work of it once I used the hanger to make a handle tool.

Thanks for the video and the links. The washplate cost $31.35 and the hub was $11.88. I did not remove the wash basket. The hardest part of the job was removing the washplate. I wedged several putty knives under the edges while dropping a ball pean hammer on the bolt head. My hub was actually OK, but the washplate splines were completely gone. If the new one fails the same way, I'll drill sideways through it and the shaft and install a long bolt to lock them together.

I just wanted to thank you so VERY much for this video! I hired a service guy to come see what my problem was with my Maytag washer and he advised me it was the Hub. He also informed me that when removing the wash plate that sometimes it breaks. He proceeded to tell me that he could not guarantee it would not break and therefore it would/could cost upwards of $300 to repair my 5 year old washer. My husband and I decided to purchase a new machine and paid the guy $75 for his visit. After watching your video last night, I decided to try removing the wash plate myself, following your instruction on tapping the screw (after loosening it) with a hammer. It working PERFECTLY!!! And I did not have to remove the front panel. I removed the hub and sure enough, it was totaling smoot, with no "teeth". I called Fox Appliance in August, GA and purchased the part for $26.00!! I replaced the hub (along with a new screw) and put everything back together and it works fantastic!! Thank you for saving me a pile of money!! May God Bless you!!

Tip to remove shaft bolt: use an impact wrench. Tip to remove wash plate, building upon approach in this video: soak the shaft overnight with liquid wrench or similar product, and the next day, you will need a second person, you can take two small allen wrenches (get the biggest that will still fit in the small drain holes), each very tightly clamped with vice grips, and using the allen wrench (bent end), snag two opposing holes in the wash plate, as close to the shaft as possible. Have the second person pull up as hard as possible on the vice grips (ie, pulling up the wash plate). While they are pulling up, and with the shaft bolt "backed out" a few turns (i backed out a few more than he did) as described in this video, smack the shaft bolt with great impulse. Since there is no room to swing a full-size hammer in the wash basin, I used a long breaker bar, sitting on the shaft bolt, so I had room to swing a full size hammer above the machine. After 3 attempts, it finally broke loose! Our machine had 4 1/2 years use, and both the shaft bolt and wash plate were seized. The hub splines were completely smooth. Take care to line up the new hub such that the hub screw holes are aligned. Note also the new hub will not immediately slide all the way on, even after trying to tap it down. Worry not. As you tighten the screws in crisscross star pattern, like you do when tightening lug nuts on a car wheel, it will pull itself down flat to the surface.

Mark - Thanks for this video! I found another that maybe makes getting the wash plate off easier - they just put a shoelace in and under and tried to get it about under the middle, pulled on both ends, and it worked - I tried that and it worked, though trying your technique could have helped loosen it too!

Thanks for the video !! I realized I could do this job after watching. I did take your advice at the end. This is a much easier job if you only remove the agitator plate at the bottom. I used a 1/2" cordless impact to remove the 7/16 bolt. Removing the plate was a bit of a chore, I used your trick by leaving the socket on the bolt head ans smacking it with a hammer. I also used a very small spray of WD40, and some plastic tools I have for removing interior panels on cars. Once the plate was off, the rest of the job was straight forward as you displayed in your video. The only advantage to removing the top, and basket is it makes it easier to remove all the change, but I was able to remove almost all of it with a small pair of needle nose, and patience. The entire job took me about 40 minutes, ten of that was getting the change out. I didn't have to move the washer, I didn't even unplug it ( not suggested) . Thank you again, videos like yours have saved me thousands of dollars, and I sincerely appreciate folks like you who take the time.

@@senpaixnick6770 I did it exactly as Mark mentioned in the video, unscrewed it about half way and struck it (carefully) a few times with the hammer. I already had washer (exact same one as yours ) on its back and was in process of taking the splutch off. I while looking for the video about the splutch actuator removal i came across you video. I got thinking about maybe I was going at the wrong problem, I had already found a bunch more coins after removing the washplate and moving the shaft from teh bottom pulley. I immdeiately stopped what I was doing, put the bottom end back together flipped washer back up and began working on the part you replaced...(no need to remove tub). I had previously tried working the washplate by hand and would get that same grinding sound. pulled the hub off and immediatley noticed the splines were wore down. while we have a big appliance parts warehouse here in town, the needed part was not in stock. Amazon in stock and will be here on Sunday, today is friday. Thanks for great video. Its hard sometimes to find just the right diagnosis of a problem

I think I might remove the tub like you did. U need to clean the shaft so the hub will go down far enough to put the shaft connector back in. Btw, when I remove tub rings, I usually push down on it right above the clip I am in clipping then unsnap the clip. The tub rings I have dealt with have a rubber like seal under them. This seal allows you to push down just enough to pull the snaps off the clips by hand. I have worked in a lot of appliances. This is the first time doing this repair. One more thing, glad you didn’t let that screw or two you dropped get away from you! I use a towel it rag over the slits around the basket in case I let one get away from me.

I have the same type of washer, (maytag Bravos mct ). My situation was that it was barely agitating. No grinding noise or anything like that. It spun and drained properly. After going through the fiasco of removing the washer plate, hub, splutch and carefully seeing that none of the splines were broken in any of those parts and even removing the infamous gearbox and putting it all back together and calibrating just to test it and find out that it still wouldn't agitate properly! Then I removed the "P.O.S" actuator and noticed that the little arm that engages with the splutch was all loose. I took the actuator apart and found that one of the "P.O.S". PLASTIC pins that rides internally on the cam had broken off. I rigged it with a small self tapping screw, ground it down till were it sits nice and even inside the cam grove. Reinstalled it, recalibrated and alas it worked like a charm! This I did out of desperation, 9pm already and a mountain of dirty clothes! But just do yourself a favor if you have the same symptoms first remove the actuator observe the little arm and if it's just dangling replace the whole thing! Save yourself a frustrating maytag nightmare!!!

We bought this washer brand new from Lowe's 3years ago. This problem started happening after 2years of use. Now we are replacing these hubs every few months. I now hate this washer. What a crock of crap Maytag you rip offs. Your products used to be good. By the way these hubs are about $17 on Amazon. You don't have to take the whole tub out either. Also using channel locks to get the agitator plate out, just beware. My son did it and cracked the whole thing. A new agitator plate is $100. Definately use the loctite when putting it all together. The first few times we replaced the hub the bolt came loose after a few weeks. And then I panicked thinking it was broken again. We have alot of boys and need a washer daily. Do yourself a favor. Don't buy this washer ever though, it's aweful. But if your watching this, you probably realize it now too. Helpful video Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you're probably overloading the washer as they are really designed for smaller loads now, hence the "water-saving" claim, lol. I've had mine 6-7 years and it just started to not spin. My wife washes 3+ heavy loads on the Bulky setting daily so I'm thinking this is a small cheap fix that I don't mind doing every few years or so. My other problem though is that I need to replace the balancing springs.

I removed the plate & sanitized it & put the bolt back on tight & it’s working but to replace we’re looking at around $350 which is about half the cost of newer & better washer.

Idk if it’s because I purchased mine used and was definitely repaired prior but I had no problem at all unscrewing the agitator and simply lifting it off, getting my new piece Tuesday so I’m hoping it works!!!!

Great video! Thank you! We did have issues removing the washer plate znd we tried several tricks. Finally we poured boiling water on washer plate until it was up and over entire plate. After an hour the washer plate popped right out!

Put a shoestring under the plate and wiggle it up,i tried this and pulled it up in 30seconds

After you tuck the shoestring make sure you have enough shoestring on both sides so you can have enough shoestring to pull on

I seen another video where the guy slid rope under the plate and pulled up from both sides. Tried it and came right off.
