Very interesting video Mark, thank you. I'm 71 now, been following you for some time. I walk 11km three times a week, don't jog, surgeon's advice after acetabular fracture (hip socket fracture) 6 years ago. My target time is 1hr 50 minutes, best so far 1hr 54 and seconds, but plenty of thinking time. Today I was thinking about your video with the race walker and tried it out, with a less flamboyant style for 50 metres. Now I have two different targets.....get to 500metres with my version of 'race walking' whilst on a quest to reach 95kg which will be a loss of 10kg. From there I'll see what happens. Seasonal greetings from Thailand to you and yours.

Weight on the scale is 298 lbs this morning. Thanks for making these videos, Mark; they are a godsend. I've been struggling with obesity my whole life: swinging dozens or hundreds of pounds. I have known what it takes to stay in shape for 10 years, but either a lack of courage or a lack of self worth has always seen me back in the Mcdonalds drive through ignoring this life ruining, and eventually fatal, problem of my own health. I've cobbled together a modest, but consistent and reasonably paced fitness and nutrition plan, and I'm tracking everything by pen and paper. I look forward to watching more of your videos this December at a much more reasonable 215-200 lbs.

I recently started adding weight training 3x per week, it hasn't made me lighter or faster but I'm definitely stronger. Next goal is to do a pull up. Results on the assisted pull up machine at the gym tell me that when I'm 20lbs lighter and 20lbs stronger I'll be there.

Nice work. Your size creates the same problem that I have. Your 10k time is a lot slower than your 5K time, even at your new light weight you are still heavier than most runners. I reckon you will be getting close to a 20 minute 5K before your 10k gets under 50 minutes. Be really interesting to see how your times develop. Also, should add - take a random hundred people, and most of them are not doing either of your times in 1 million years! Good stuff 👍🏼

Great video and what a wonderful idea to compare weight and fitness in running. Im 62 now and still run every other day , just a gentle 5k in around 28 minutes . When i started running at 40, i was 15 stone 10lbs, and running half a mile knocked me sick. I wondered why i had signed up to the great north run with a friend, which was 8 months away. I quickly realised i needed to lose weight, and combined with a good diet and slow running, got my weight down before the race to 12 stone 10lbs. The difference was literally like you have demonstrated, ( in reverse ) I comfortably ran the half marathon in 1 hour 42 minutes. And my running took off from there on, enjoying running for many years after, and my PB times vastly improved. For me the conclusion is that for running weight and fitness go hand in hand. Im not saying that in any way you should make yourself ill, trying to get to the weight of a Kenyan marathon runner,. But you need to be sensible and try and get your weight down to whatever point your body looks right at. You will enjoy enjoy your running much more, and be less likely to pick up injuries, as of course its all about the stress on our bodies, limbs and joints etc

I'm about 25kg/50lbs overweight right now. Doesn't sound like much compared to where you started, but I find that my knees are the limiting factor for me. They start to ache well before I get too winded to continue. I'm hoping it gets better over time - maybe taking collagen would help. I don't have any nearby trails to run, so most of what I do is on pavement and I'm sure that's not great for my joints either. edit: forgot to mention that I'm 49 years old, so that's undoubtedly a factor as well.

I was never very fast - But I loved running. Absolutely loved it. Now I can only wistfully watch. I found out during that first marathon training that I have osteoarthritis in one big toe joint. Finally after 15 years, it is painful and chronic enough that I can’t run anymore. The lesson here (besides keep running if you can) is - DO NOT under any circumstances wear high heeled shoes every day, all day, to your office job for 10-15 years. It’s just not worth it.

I've actually thought about weight vs fitness, glad you did the little science experiment since I couldn't. Don't think I'd get the same results though, I ran a 29m57s 5k at 76kg, I'm now 59.5kg and my 5k time if I went all out would be in the high 25 minutes. 16.5kg sounds like quite a bit to run 5km with, so I don't think I'd get sub 30 with that. Still glad I lost the weight though, went from 103.4kg and dropped almost 45kg in 7,5 months. This channel definetly helped me throught that process too. Not because I wanted to be like you or do the same things, but because everytime I saw a video I'd get exited about running and just wanted to push myself to see what I'm made of.

Great video , I started 2021 at 120kg , and finished the year at 85kg , this is where I did my first 5k , this year I have trained hard hard , got faster , but the last few months my diet has gone to shit , and I have put on 10kg , and the running has just got slower and harder 😢,

what made your diet drop off?

Only reason I ask is after being 110kg myself and getting down to 80kg a similar time to you, i could never imagine putting 10kg back on.

I've gone up and down by 10-15kg a few times in my life but I do it safe in the knowledge that I can lose it again. Couple of the times have been because of injury and having twins which made exercising difficult. Often I've just had a sort of click moment where I've thought "time to get back in shape" and just got on with it. If you've managed this before then you can do it again. My suggestion is enjoy yourself over Christmas and get on with it next year. No point trying to be disciplined this time of year, plenty of time for good habits in January.

@@hurcorh sweats and cakes 😛😛 , a few holidays And now Christmas, I lost the weight through pure diet , around 800 to 1200 calories per day , this year I have up my calories but also my exercising, trying to run around 25-30 km per week , but I am now always hungry, before if some one brought cakes in to the office I could easy say no , now I find it sooooo hard

@@danbox3565 I know it's not the focus of this channel but try some resistance training as well if you aren't already. All I do nowadays is basic bodyweight stuff on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and my maintenance intake is around 3,000 calories per day at 79-81kg bodyweight. I do cardio as well primarily for heart health and endurance, but in my experience (reformed zero cardio gym rat) I really do think intense resistance training and HIIT are particularly effective at pushing up your total daily energy expenditure and allowing you to eat more.

Serious chuckle factor with this one. If you are looking at weighted events, maybe consider the 'Fan Dance' series. It's in the Brecons where you have run before. Up and over Pen y Fan from the Storey Arms to Torpantau and back again carrying a pack and booted. As a light weight racing snake, I am completely unsuited to it, but also completely hooked. Your power running physique should work well for this type of event.

Hahaha this is a fantastic video! Though i vote that your grandkid does the commentary next time, seems like she had a lot of valuable contributions that went unacknowledged here 😉

This was very informative. I recently started school and after one semester put on a good bit of fat. Nothing crazy but immediately before school I was a personal trainer, marine officer candidate who could run 3-5 miles without stopping. But that’s gone down to barely 1.5, I constantly feel hot which is new, and when I run, my ankles and hips take a lot more pressure than before. Now I know I just gotta get the fat off!

This is as honest as it can get. I'll add that with 20-25% body fat you can still achieve good results (10k under 45 minutes). Thing is, you need to train quite a lot and still leave too much on the table compared to an optimized weight level. Thanks for the (funny) insight to your life experience. You really know how to cheer up!

Doing things with your kid, that alarms mothers and creates massive postings on Facebook, is being a great dad! My kid was 2.5 years old when he was taught to use an axe and 10 when he was taught sword fighting (its now the reason I have a skull fracture and two loose front teeth and scars in my head = he is way better than me now) and regular survival trekking. The Kid loves it! The mother and her friends hate it and regards it as "toxic".

You're an awesome dad. Ridiculous the way so many women act nowadays, but that's a combination of evolutionary biology and social propaganda. I'm a female (just noting this to indicate we're not all brainwashed) and would be disappointed if my future child didn't learn to use an axe and a sword.
