Makes perfect sense. Exercise that isn’t enjoyable equals something that is likely to be given up or not even started. Now I want an e-bike! 😀

I have had an E-bike for years and its the best thing I ever bought. It simply flattens out the hills and rewards your effort encouraging you to keep peddling and keep going. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want. It has allowed me to cycle routes that I stopped doing because of a big hill climb at the end but now I just boost the power and keep going, although it is hard but at least manageable, without the motor I would have to dismount and push the bike. I also take the dog out with it almost every day and he has never been fitter 🙂

I don't like cycling for cycling's sake but love my Trek ebike. Cycling is now fun again and the fact that I'm getting 80%-ish of the exercise benefit of my non electric Trek is brilliant. the other thing is, you may only get around 80% of the exercise over a set distance but I always want go at least 50% further on the ebike. Thanks for the video, echoes my sentiments exactly.

Cracking video. Got my Giant fathom E2 in March and absolutely love it. Your analysis seems spot on to my experience. No less effort, you just go further and faster. More importantly than anything my 64 year old dad with mild COPD got one at the same time. He’s been out with me every Sunday bar two since, for between 15 and 26 miles. Largely off road. They remove the fitness gap and we stay together both getting the level of exercise we want. If he’s getting out of puff or dropping back he just whacks into turbo for a bit, problem solved. I do feel the legislation needs looking at. They don’t need to be a lot quicker, I think even 20mph would remove some of the irritation of it cutting in and out on the road. Thanks for this informative video. Your experience mirrors my own from the time of purchase to my rides. Happily, here in Canada the motor cuts of around 32/33 kmh legally so on flats my cruising speed is around 29 kmh . I'm 62 and it makes me feel 40 again 🥳

Hilly terrain is one reason why I bought an ebike. I hate having to spend so much energy trying to climb a hill on a bike. It sucks. I end up having to get off of my bike and walk it uphill. This is what made me give up cycling for several years. With my ebike, I have a much easier time climbing hills with it and having an ebike just makes cycling much more fun because you can go faster than you normally can on a regular bike. It reminded me that cycling can still be fun.

As always, great video. “Man covers set distance in less time on eBike” isn’t surprising. While the instantaneous Watts may be surprising to some, to achieve the same overall cardio benefit then you’d need to go farther to maintain that watt output for longer. Time is one factor and yes enjoyment another. I’m a big fan of eBikes, great fun 😎

Ive gone from 111 watts per ride average to 190 average, over 40 miles, in the last 4 months on a bosch powered ebike. You get exactly what you want from an ebike. I think 15 mph is a bit low. Maybe on a MTB trail, but on the road thats pretty slow. I live in the USA and have the Bosch Performance speed with 85nm torque and 28 mph pedal assist, its perfect for commuting with traffic.

Great video. I have had my ebike for a few months. I bought it because at 62 my leg power has been dropping and I wanted to put the fun back into my rides. Boy did it ever. I do notice that my leg power is a bit weaker but my endurance is up since I'm riding in a lower heart rate zone. You just have to be ready for the twits that will verbally harass you because you're on one.

The beauty in riding bikes is that you can always choose how hard you want to be on yourself. That remains true for the e-bike. If going faster at the same level of exhaustion is more motivating, go for it! That being said, this doesn't quite apply to me. I ride road bikes and mountain bikes and even on the enduro mtb, which is mostly meant for the steep, gnarly, and technical downhill trails, I get a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have "earned" the decent. It is somewhat similar with the road bike. I like reachingthe top of a climb and knowing that getting up there at this pace was "all me". That is quite subjective, though.

When i started running with 41 years old, i was suprised not being totally gassed out after 1km as i was when i was younger. I think that is mostly due to using an e-cargo-bike the 2 years before that almost daily. Joints are "worked in", muscles are used to doing some work, cardio is also used to some excercise. And that all while being fun on the ebike, not to worry about hills and long ascents. Ebikes are great, especially for casual workout and getting into doing stuff without using a car all the time and getting weak.

Great video. Once you have a measure to understand how hard you are riding your ebike you can adjust it to whatever level you want. I used PowerTap pedals and found I had been riding way too easy. Now I can ride it as hard as my road bike but still have easy recovery days. Find I’m riding much more and now getting good fitness gains. Heart rate measurement would work just as well.

Not a fan of the European 15.5 mph. US 20 mph is already restrictive. Agree that fun factor and other variables are fantastic on E-bikes. Able to ride more, faster working technical and areas to different levels. Much more alert at the faster speeds. Excellent information you provided.

I have recently bought a heybike ec1 and have several manual bikes. On the road ( where permitted ) I can average 19.7 mph with the limiter off from the 250 watt pedal assist motor on a certain 23 mile sporting course. On my cannondale system six dura ace aero manual bike, on the same course, I can average 22 mph. The reason for this is the cannondale is a lot more aero. The battery on the heybike was almost flat at the end of 23 miles because it was working all the time. Obviously I could do many multiples the distance on the cannondale, with no battery, just my chemical energy.

Just as Hoverounds provide mobility for the immobile, Ebikes provide cycling accessibility for people who either need the help or simply don't have the passion to be truly good cyclist. So enjoy that two wheeled Hoveround and keep riding.

I've cycled for 30 years I'v just gone to an ebike due to health reasons. I can definitely say you don't get anywhere near as much of a workout. I don't break a sweat.. However that's my choice. I keep around the motor kicking in zone of 14-15 mph

Totally agree with you. I have a bike and find my avg heart over the same course is alot higher on the bike. Maybe don't get the leg strength training over the normal bike but its tons more fun.

I came up behind someone in Virginia water park, next to windsor.. I came up to a couple hitting 20mph easily on a riese muller, had 150km of range, for a couple in their 80s they can now do 50+KM rides where as without it they'd be stuck with the old 15km route they used to do. I dropped them in the spint though :D

My ebike is a road bike and if you work the gears properly you get just as much exercise, it’s easy not to get any exercise just boost the power. I ride In ECO mode and only use the boost if I would have to walk because if steepness of hill , it’s great, can go so ,yahoo further.

I think they’re great for commuting, but you’re kidding yourself if you think you’ll get an equal workout on one. What’s the point of riding further or longer if it’s for exercise anyway?

Sold my ebike since i don’t go use mountain bile. I use a gravel/trekking and race bike. The limitations of 25kp/h kicks in way too fast and then the e bike is way too heavy. Soo for mountain bikers maybe something good. Nothing for someone that is in a city/street or fast bikers

Except the bulk of eMTBers you see are either overweight or noobs. eBikes are 100% easier than non eBikes, and mental fortitude/technique etc is lost (as you just rely on the power to get you over technical climbs rather than skill or mental hardness). I owned an eMTB dually (alongside a regular dually) and 100% I would be stronger both body and mind riding the analogue bike. Otherwise what is the point of buying an eMTB (I did it so I could get more DH runs in, not to suffer just as much as on my regular bike).
