The commenter who told OP of Story #1 that she was just teaching her husband to be more secretive was spot on. She didn’t give him 48 hours to make a decision: she gave him 48 hours to study her very detailed list of rules and figure out exactly how he could flout all of them without getting caught a second time. So glad she came to her senses and withdrew her ultimatum before the nonsense went too far.

Replies to the last story make me roll my eyes. If the husand wanted the kids to have anything, he would have left them something. But he didn't and that's his right. He left his inheritance to op to do with as she wished. He wanted her to have it all. He did so without expecting op to redistribute it to his kids. Otherwise he would have left it to them himself. He didn't want the kids to have his money. His wishes should be respected. Op did a good thing with the money that he likely would have approved of.

Nobody wants to believe they're a terrible person.

Story 3, I think 'not enough information' is fine as a verdict but I'm skeeved by comments literally making shit up to paint OP as an evil stepmom who should accept any and all abuse by offspring and give them money while she's at it. It's possible for offspring to mistreat parents. It's possible for step-kids to mistreat step-parents. Being a younger generation is not a free pass to be as abusive as you want while maintaining a moral high-ground because 'parents/adults are responsible for all of it anyway'. Especially when those kids were brought in as teenagers and purportedly instigated cruelty as teenagers. The generalizations are just creepy at this point.
@bessieburnet9816

But as the adults, OP and her husband had the responsibility to clear it up and solve the problem to have a peaceful household. They willfully kept the information away from them. They had a responsibility to clear the air, they had nothing to loose, and if they were still dicks, the facts don't change and they can be secure in the knowledge that they did everything they could and she isn't a gold digger.
@janedoe885
@janedoe885 Жыл бұрын
@@bessieburnet9816 The reason OP didn’t tell the step-kids she had money is because it shouldn’t have mattered whether she did or not. Coming from a less financially secure background than your partner doesn’t automatically make someone a gold-digger incapable of love who is only there to exploit wealth. The presumption that that’s the only reason someone not independently wealthy could love a person with money is insulting and classist. There have literally been stories about times wealthy partners financially abused less well-off significant others because they assumed them to be shallow and only there for money despite all evidence to the contrary. Adults do not bear sole responsibility for fixing conflict with offspring, especially teenage offspring. The teenagers have their own agency and made repeated choices in their behavior. They also aren’t teenagers anymore. They have never been owed information about OP’s financial status and should have been treating others with decency regardless of economic standing. It speaks poorly of THEIR character that they didn’t.
@mariselytorres8039
@mariselytorres8039 Жыл бұрын
@@janedoe885I would also like to add on that many Reddit posts in the past about disrespectful teens is either because the bio parent was turning the kids against the step parent or the kids still want their parents to be together and now with the new addition, they’re in the way of making their wishes come true. Other reason for teens to behave that way could also be because the step parent is affair partner while parents were married but that doesn’t seem to be the issue here. I believe a lot of redditors that attempt to pin step parents as “horrible person” or “isn’t telling the full story” are projecting their own bad experiences with their parents/step parents. Teens tend to be angsty and assholes (I should know, I was one) but they shouldn’t be excused just because they’re teens. At that point, they should at least know better. I’d understand if they were kids below 13, but damn, 14 and up should know damn well not to be a dick just because they feel like it.
@janedoe885
@janedoe885 Жыл бұрын
@@mariselytorres8039 For sure! Like… it isn’t that step-parents or parents are incapable of being in the wrong either for sure. Some cases they will absolutely be the source of the issue. But can’t just assume and generalize like that, you know? When I was a teen, a guy’s mom in my group of friends was bending over backwards to provide for a group activity or event. I can’t remember what it was, but I think she was the only adult involved and she was doing A LOT to help out. She got a minor detail mixed up, and her son just started berating her in front of everyone in the ugliest way. She looked like she was going to cry. It was absolutely horrifying and I couldn’t look at the guy the same way afterward. Couldn’t imagine talking to my own parents that way, let alone when they were trying to do something nice for me. I’ve seen cases like what you described too with cheaters, abusers, all kinds of bullshit behavior from parents. But the idea that being the offspring means you can do no wrong and parents/step-parents are always evil is delusional I think.

Usually it’s the other way around, with the cheating spouse begging their partner to open the relationship or giving them permission to cheat. But this seems slightly different. They’re staying as a couple for the sake of keeping their house and kids. But it seems like OP doesn’t want any more intimacy. So they would both be able to have extramarital relationships, with boundaries to keep them away from their family and home. It kinda seems like a cope. She wants to change their relationship to more or less roommates. If that’s the case, they won’t be a family, her entire reason for not wanting a full divorce, it won’t be good for the kids. Just divorce, it is what is best for her and her kids.

I found this one odd too but notice that when given the choice to continue to sleep around like he had been, he doesn't want HER to be able to sleep around as well. Strange how possessive cheaters can be when the tables have turned. Plus this would make an unbalanced power dynamic in the household where anytime he is upset at her using the open marriage she would just pull the divorce card which is not a healthy relationship... Teatering on the edge of divorce would just make everyone unhappy in the marriage, especially the kids.

Story 3: Honestly, I understand the kids up until the showing up for money part. It taking teens a while to warm up to a woman and a family dynamic that was potentially forced on them sounds normal. Did OP's husband leave the kids mom for her? What was custody like? Did the dad make a big deal of custody or were the teens free to choose? What was the relationship like between OP's husband and his ex? How old was Op, how old was the husband? Did OP's husband ever try to mend his relationship with any of his kids prior to being sick (they were adults at this time, but so was he)? There are just too many unanswered questions for me to villianize the kids. Also, does OP's daughter know that she has money, because wanting a piece of 25k when you come from money is some selfish ish. She should have felt no way about the waitress receiving it all.

Story 1- yes it should have been a divorce right off the bat but I won’t lie. I love that she made the ultimatum of open marriage.. or divorce. Not because of the fact that she needed to stay in the marriage but to really twist it in how he EFFED up the relationship. He would have to contend with the fact that because of his selfishness he would have to feel the same thing she felt. “Is he better in bed than me? Is she really at work? What are they doing?” He knew he couldn’t answer the ultimatum so it ultimately lead to the divorce where we all knew it would go!

Story 1. I don't recommend open marriage. This is actually unhealthy to your marriage. Your terms are fair, but it is human to be imperfect and break rules. You both did not start off this relationship with an open marriage, but only led to it by infidelity. This means that there is a lack of trust with deception. No marriage will survive with such dishonesty and lacking trust. Open marriage will require trust and honesty, which he lacks in character and integrity. You should end this misery and find someone who will be truly committed with fidelity towards you. Do not prolong the inevitable - divorce.

I'm just glad she took the time to realize that whether they stayed together or not under the proposed arrangement, the kids would STILL be from a broken home. It just wouldn't look obvious to outsiders. This was just an extreme version of the "stay together for the kids" crap that everybody hears about. No one would be happy here because as the kids get older, they'd be seeing what's going on and get suspicious, or get torn up because they have to tell on the parent who got sloppy. How many stories have there been of kids who've seen something they shouldn't have only to go nuts trying to keep the secret? Worse when the parents already know and don't give a damn, THEN WHAT? Nope--best to cut the cord. She clearly wanted divorce and she has all the cards. Play them now, not giving out so much rope she could hang them both a dozen times over down the road... and have the kids despising both.

I'm sorry, I stopped right at the beginning of your post, but the husband cheating kinda means the relationship isn't just unhealthy, it's dead. So.... Op doesn't need to worry about the health of her marriage either way. I think she was trying to be helpful for the kids by not immediately kicking their father out and allowing him to continue seeing his kids everyday, something that's not possible when they divorce. Not strictly for the sake of her children, she's just not willing to pretend to trust her husband for their kids because she went through that herself when her dad cheated on his marriage to her own mother. The ultimatum was probably to see what, if any, option her stbx would choose. (Like divorce or couples counseling) especially since he chose to change their relationship by cheating, she was probably also trying to give him the option to decide what the relationship looked like. When he tried to get her to move past it, she gave him the papers because she couldn't. She gave him a compromise to keep his kids and same address and not have to find a new place quickly, or he could keep his harlot witch Egyptian Queen (history reference) and leave now.

They think that a woman who stays home with her kid is a gold digger. They didn't deserve to know. They either can accept that OP doesn't work and their misconception that their father pays the bills or not. There is nothing wrong with one person in a relationship not working if that's okay with the partner. It really had nothing to do with the kids. They were mean to OP because they thought women who didn't work were useless money hungry gold diggers, they are shitty people and their misconceptions about the world aren't OPs problem to clear up. The issue is how they treated OP, telling them that OP actually has her own money doesn't solve anything, they are still awful people who think it's okay to shame a woman and call her names because she doesn't work. The father and his parents managed to sneak away with the birth certificate and forge OP's sisters name on it, naming the baby "Valentino." It later came out that the guy was cheating if OP's sister and he disappeared, refusing to pay child support. OP got revenge sometime later by convincing the cheater's new girlfriend (who was pregnant when they met) to give the baby OP's sister's name, as a reminder to pay his child support. As for the baby, the name was legally changed soon after his father disappeared, though the family occasionally calls him "Val" as a nickname.

Teenagers can be very cruel aholes and if op kept receiving nothing but their cruelty then the step kids are to blame for this. Funny how people always want to toss out the they’re kids card…so. Those kids had two parents and it was up to their biological parents to teach them how to be good human beings. Also when parents decide to fund your college or university you people should be very grateful and feel humbled by this gesture. You’re not entitled to your parents money after you become an adult especially since this is what independence from your parents actually looks like. Anyway, op didn’t owe his adult children anything and she did inform her daughter of the same when her also expressed her own entitlement. OP doesn’t need to tell his children her financial status just to get them off her back. So, when asked about giving him a second chance, she can say with certainty that she did gave him a chance, but he didn't want to accept it. It's simply to save face with her friends and family. (I could be wrong, but that's the vibe I got)

The inheritance story. My parents lived below their means. They had a house that was in a location, location, location and sold for a large amount after dad passed. My sister is still reeling over the amounts that she is handling for mom. We are not fighting, not worth it.

Story 2 why do women let men that obviously don’t respect them impregnate them?

Why do you think there are so many single mothers and kids raised in one parent households? Guess they like assholes, so I don’t really feel sympathy for it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Story 1: the terms "gaslight" and "still want to be married to husband" do not go well together. Glad OP wised up.

I think what happened in Story 2 is that OP's husband initially didn't believe OP about his mother when she was the only one saying MIL wasn't great, but realised he was wrong when a second (ex)partner corroborated OP's story.

Story 3. When they grew up they could've came back and apologized. They could've spend days with their father. They didn't, but then once he died they came to claim the inheritance. NTA. YTAs comments would probably treat their step parents and parents like that and then would be all surprised pikachu face once they are left with nothing.

So last story: I’m curious if OP’s child got anything from the estate. Like not even talking money, just SOMETHING. Because it sounds like no one got anything besides OP’s money.

Story #2 At least she is happy with the name now. I have my doubts as to whether the marriage will last given his gaslighting about MIL's treatment of OP.
