As an engineer in the field of epoxy composites I must stress, that it is highly advisable to use proper protection gloves, when you handle epoxy. I have seen far too many colleagues with high allergic response to epoxy from earlier skin contact to this substance. Thin nitrile gloves are not removing your excellent handyman skills ;-)

Some time is better to work without gloves but use tool and don't get contact with the epoxid! Epoxid under gloves are so wors! Work clean und Fresh air on the hand/skin is much better. I bought myself a 3M Helmet with extern blower. It's amazing! I've got allergy against different dust. 😑

My old neighbor builds and flies these (minus the motor), I've seen him fly one for an hour and a half straight off a single throw once, he competes regularly with them. The craftsmanship of these hand tossed glider planes is on another level, I'm routinely amazed by how perfect and smooth the carbon wings end up. I've always been into flying freestyle drones and would like to get into some wings, though I'll be leaving the gliders alone for a while lol.

What is the opaque plastic? That you put the wax on? You have blue foam, carbon fiber, the coating, and then bag. It keeps the epoxy from sticking to the bag, and leaves a smooth finish.

Downside: You can't heat-cure it. If you e.g. cover the whole setup in a heat blanket the remaining air expands and you vacuum is gone. Also they aren't that much cheaper than a vacuum pump.

As someone who builds, flies, and repairs competition F3K gliders, I have a series of questions for you. 1. Why not a bias weave on the wings and tails? The bias would allow for a stiffer part in torsion. 2. Why not kevlar hinges on the tails and wing? 3. Why the 60gsm fabric on the tails? Glass tails are typically fine 4. Why didn't you use 3m77 to adhere the glass LE reinforcements to the core? 5.Why no beds to hold the wings while bagging to prevent warps? 6. Why no shear web in the wings? 7. Why bottom drive for the wing servos? This exposes the linkage unnecessarily.

@markoroolaid
@markoroolaid 2 жыл бұрын
Hello. I myself also think about whether it will succeed or not. 60g/m2 was not a problem for cutting. I put wet cardboard under the cloth to prevent a flame. i have a 130w co2 laser. parameters were: speed 50mm/s and power 60%. I haven't tried cutting thicker fabric, there might be problems there, but I don't know

@@markoroolaid The 130W is surely helping your cause, Still I am ipressed that it worked. I have tried to cut some 2x2 3k twill with a 60w, no luck. Just a mess.

Awasome work (and the black mamba is also terrific :-)) ! I've never made a carbon-formed polyester core model, but the quality of your video and the tip about using a vacuum packing machine really makes me want to give it a go. A few questions: 1°) on the leading edge of the stab, do you use fiberglass or peel ply (the material seems to be adhesive) ? 2°) The stab core seems to be made of styrifoam and the wing cores of polyester. Is there any particular reason for changing materials? Thank you in advance for the time you will pass to reply, and thank to share all your 3D model !
@markoroolaid

I used fiberglass on the front edge. I tried to fix it with a thin 2-sided tape, but it is not necessary. With the resin stays very well. Styrofoam is very suitable for both wings and stabilizers. I myself used another material on the wings, because I had it at home ;)

Hello Marko, to check : - for the vertical stab you provide two files, but i don’t see any difference between them ? - stab is 330 x 81 with 3 mm thickness. - vertical stab is 233 x 115 with 3 mm thickness. - wings are 750 x 165 with 10 mm thickness at the emplanture. thank you in advance for your kindly help.

It's just spread tow textreme carbon, but he didn't lay it up correctly, the bias should be at 45° to the span of the wing for increased torsion strength.
