I bought one of these in March and it is without doubt the best bike I have ever owned (and there have been a few over the last 25 years). It does everything I want superbly - commutes, trips to the shops, back lane blats, and very long distance touring, all in supreme comfort. Being 6'4" it is one of few bikes that don't cripple me after an hour or so and the heated grips and seats are an absolute joy in colder weather. I had the Akrapovic can on from new and this just adds to the soundtrack and the standard luggage (which isn't great quality and has already been replaced under warranty due to failure....) and I am going to get the hillstart upgrade soon, as it quickly becomes heavy on a slight incline. It really is 4 bikes in one: full on hooligan sport mode, slightly less mental street mode, rain mode for when it's tipping it down, and off road for green laning. All distinct and dead to set on the move. The ONLY thing that is difficult to set on the move is cruise control - a right fiddle and easy to get distracted trying to do (unlike the GS, for example). In my view, it's a FIRST CLASS bike in every way. Yes, it's hideously expensive to buy at 16k but as I aim to keep this for years I am not bothered too much; to me it is worth every penny and I use it as often as possible in all weathers (4500 miles in 6 months so far, which is more than I did all last year on my old Sprint ST). Before I owned the bike I thought the LED cornering lights were a gimmick but they DO work in the dark extremely well, lighting up the corner when you turn rather than the hedge on the opposite side of the road. Well done KTM for a cracking bike! :-)

Old post I know, but as another tallish dude (less so at 6'2") I am curious if you rode a Multistrada when you were sitting on bikes? I'm gonna go sit on both and check them out, but I have a Ducati dealer less than a mile away which is super convenient for service apts and shit so my inclination is to go Duc. Currently on a HD Nightrod Special and the forward controls are godamn murder on long rides. Feel like I'm fucking a (american) football.

I've owned this bike for just over a month now, from a 2016 Triumph xr 800. I fell in love with this bike on day 2 of owning it. This bike is my daily driver as i have no car. I'm about 5'7''- 5'8'', 210 lbs. Had it off road on the fire trails of Oregon mountains, but mostly on road riding back and forth to work. I have to say the POWER is AMAZING!!! The different power modes are very defined. Dirt mode really feels like my '72 XT500 enduro, loads of low end with very little back pressure letting off the throttle. It also has Rain, Street, and Sport modes. All of which work fantastically for their purpose. The suspensions modes are even more crazy adaptive, if thats possible. I have NOT ridden the other large competitors of this KTM, but i dont see how they can possibly be any better, probably just all minor preferences at that point. All of the possible suspension settings make it so easy and user friendly to set up for any ride. I was a bit intimidated by the size of the bike at first glance, especially being only 5'7''ish, but dont be. This thing flicks into corners easier than anything I've ridden including 600's class. The ride position with the balance of this bike makes it so effortless in speedy corners and tight U turns. The continentals that mine came with seem to stick waaay better than I expected. So far in the ever changing climate and terrain of Oregon I've have been able to do it all from small jumps off roading to super fast cornering on the street. I LOVE THIS BIKE! If your on the fence about what to get, you owe it to yourself to take this thing for a test ride. 110% recommend it in case u couldn't tell by the review lol.

Another great review. I just got the 1190 Adventure from a mate that wants to go back to sport bikes. Not even a year old and fully kitted out with $4K of accessories. Absolutely love it. I was worried that it would be too big and powerful, having come up from the Honda CB500X but I feel more confident on this one. Like you, I would also recommend to anyone looking at this style of bike, that they give the KTMs a run. Great bikes.

I bought one of these yesterday... and his reaction to the pulling power was just like mine. I used some different words though. :) And the comfort level. I only got to ride about 70 miles last night... but I haven't felt a bump in the road yet. Suspension is sublime.

Definitely my next bike for my collection! Everything about it makes such perfect sense! I love how it "Rev's" on the hwy meaning you don't feel like you're stuck in 4th gear or something like I do on the BMW GS and XR. If you are over 6ft tall, this bike fit's like a glove. The spoke wheels can actually be adjusted for run-out unlike the GS. I've owned a GS and this KTM is a better road bike!

Thanks for review. I can understand why you think this bike is ideal for a 6 foot person or taller, as I am 6'2" and have felt the same way as an owner of this bike. However, this bike is fantastic and made sure that I test drove and rented the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure for long periods of time, and ultimately found my 2016 KTM 1290 Super Adventure (T) to be far superior in all aspects of the ride.

I had to laugh when you described the ride quality as a magic carpet. That's exactly how I described the DVT Multistrada after I rode it. You pick a point on the horizon, roll the throttle, and the world just glides past underneath you.

I really enjoyed your review of the 1290 Super Adventure Mark, thanks. I bought one of them a few weeks back, the "Blimey, flipping heck.." factor sold it to me almost immediately after having been left very disappointed with the feel of the S1000XR at touring speeds . The 1290 SA is probably the most sure footed and confidence inspiring bike I've ever owned when pushing hard and tipping in on dodgy tar surfaces. The semi-active suspension is amazing. Gripes - the fuel gauge is slow to update and it's going to take a while to trust it/work it out. The centre stand lever is jammed up under the passenger footpeg and hard to get to. When on the centre stand on a hard surface the bike can slide forward without rolling off the stand. Not an issue for me at 6'5" luckily.

Great review Mark. How about testing the new KTM 1050 Adventure? At first glance seems like a bit "under the radar" bike but the reviews I saw thus far are very good. Apparently engine power curve matches the 1190 up to 6000 RPM so seems like a very good cheaper option to these top of the line monsters.
@grpantsch8 жыл бұрын
Dear Mark thanks a bunch for this virtual ride with you! It helped a lot together with your objective remarks. I am in a kind of a hellish dilema right now because I am about to buy my new bike and quite possibly live the rest of my life with it. I have already test ridden the KTM 1290 SA and I totally agree with your opinion. I've also tested the new Ducati Multistrada DVT and the latest BMW R 1200 GS LC. The Multistrada was sublime to say at least! With the top selling BMW I found clunky gearbox problems especially by upshifting and a slight more nervous fueling than the Multistrada and the KTM, which in MHO has the best engine smoothness and fueling. In Greece, right now, the KTM retails at a price of 18.690 euros with side panniers included, while the Ducati climbs up at 22.000 with the touring package and the BMW at 20.000 with all the electronics. So, as you see, best overall value for me is the KTM, but I am also 5 feet 8 and the 30+ kgs weight difference from the Multistrada concerns me. The new Multistrada feels so incredibly light footed and nimble, but there again lies the considerable price difference. So, I really feel the agony of the choice right now!
@markpulling128 жыл бұрын
Hi george ,you could always consider the base multistrada dvt which is £2500 cheaper here in the uk and its 95% as good as the s touring ,dont know the price in greece ,ok you dont get the electronic suspension but the standard suspension is brilliant anyway ...all the best mark

Hi Mark, Good review. Thanks. I have always liked the look of these KTM adventure bikes. It appears awesome. I would love one. I should imagine people who want to tour the world for which these bikes are possibly designed would be keen to hear about pannier options also possibility of a larger front wheel ......... Love your comments on this KTM "Jesus Christ, this is a ballistic missile!" Have watched your reviews of other bikes which are also good. You try and concentrate on every day riding which is good. I realise you only have bikes for a very short time but you might mention tyres on the bikes, fuel consumption MPG figures and service intervals although you do with the Ducati Multistada DVT which also appears a gorgeous bike, one I had never considered until seeing your review. Your low speed fueling riding tests are very helpful rolling the throttle in 5 or 6th or indeed clicking down to 2nd and opening full throttle. For me I ride an '07 Honda Blackbird (also a ballistic missile) so your reviews are very informative for directing me to my next bike. At some point I shall want to change it not because it is no longer any good but because bikes and technology have moved on so much more sine it was produced, offering even an greater riding experience, although the Blackbird despite not having all the really recent modern kit is still a very competent, comfortable and fast bike. Thanks again. Alex.

First time seen your stuff Mark - great review, thank you ! Saw it up close in dealership yesterday - wow is all I can say !! Had had our eyes on a Ducati Multi too but sat on this and liked it better which was a great surprise. At just over 6' 1" and over 16stone the size of it suited me better than the smaller Duc and didn't like the slightly pushed forward rake of the Multi seat - a la moto stylee. Really enjoyed your review - especially the 'holy sh*t' style reactions! It's a good 2500 pounds cheaper over here - now for the small matter of manifesting it! Peace my friend, from Nova Scotia Canada.

Since their 1190 squashed the competition in the dirt and this has similar/same chassis, I'd like to see how this bike does. The GS just felt like a pig compared to the 1290. I liked the Multistrada too - it rips and handled a little more effortlessly, but seemed a little more 'buzzy' or something... Thanks for the vid!

I really enjoyed my test ride on this bike too. But I haven't been tempted away from my DVT Multistrada order. I found this a bit too tall (I'm 5'9") but I would have got used to that. The low speed fueling didn't feel as smooth as the Ducati MS with the DVT engine, or the BMW GS ADV, but only marginally. The seat wasn't as comfy as the MS, but not as bad as the BMW. It felt just as quick as the MS to me, but then I wasn't caning either of them. I just found the MS fits me better and the bike is a size that can get through traffic. This is a bit of a handful and a bit wide filtering, like the BMW. I didn't think the quality of the components and switch gear matches the BMW or the Ducati and I think the price point should be about a grand lower. Awesome bike though, my number 2 preference.

Super review - again - Mark. One issue that all these bikes need to be addressed is the heat. The boxers dissapate this for obvious reasons better than most, I have not ridden this one but really considering it, the 1190 adventure had heat issues as did the Aprilia Caponord. Some reviews saying that it has been somewhat solved on the 1290 and a real world issue for many of us here in hotter climes. Perhaps they only have cool grey days in Dorset? :) Keep up the good work.
@markpulling129 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Dicker Hi daniel ,cant say i noticed much heat ,but then it wasnt a hot day when i test rode the 1290,i did read somewhere that they have put a heat guard above the rear cylinder but i can well imagine that things could get a little warm as your sitting right over that rear pot ! ..all the best mark
@euanclark21289 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Dicker Yes, the heat was a worry of mine before I bought it. 4500 miles on in all weathers, including the so-called summer here in the UK, and I have noticed it, even in town at walking pace speeds.
@keesketsers58668 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no heat issues, have done about 10.000km on it. I don't know why people always say that bmw dissipate heat better, I have owned MANY bmw's and they where horrible in the heat. They fry your feet and legs and the heat coming off the cilinders at a traffic light is suffocating. I will take liquid cooling any day of the week....

1290 Super Adventure has a safety flaw in its design, the motorcycle has a major safety problem. I bought mine six month ago and since day one I have been experiencing head wobble at speed ranging from 100 to 120 mph. I contacted the dealer and they said “there is a software upgrade regarding the head wobble” I took the motorcycle to the dealer, after the software upgrade I discovered that the four setting for the damping is not working any more there is not difference in the performance between sports, street, comfort or off-road.

I'd love to see a shaft drive on the KTM. With 160 hp on tap I think they could afford to loose a couple.

Did you manage to notice the average MPG?
@markpulling129 жыл бұрын
No sorry but I would have thought at least 45 mpg from a grunty low revver like this ..all the best mark
@euanclark21289 жыл бұрын
+VeeFour I get on average 40mpg day to day but I do ride it like I stole it a lot. Stick on the cruise control at 75mph on the motorway and I'd imagine you'd get into the mid 50's.

Best I got on a holliday, two up and luggage was 53mpg (uk). Normal use two up is about 48mpg. It gets WAY better mpg when it has more miles on the clock. Took about 6000miles before the consumption got a lot better.

That's better than I imagined it would be

I hear that KTM or the aftermarket are coming out with lower seat, like two inches. So start looking, Or do it yourself.

Who would spend 20K on a Speed Triple RR when you could get this wonderful memory maker and have cash in your pocket?

I made the mistanke and bought one of thease.... nothing but trouble since I got it. Preload fault on rear damper, klonking from front fork, server buffeting doe to piss poor wind shield, very un-dynamic and heavy turn in. All in all, a bike that feels like it was released before it was fully developed. Truely the only positive thing I can say about it, is that it has a very powerfull engine and a Nice gearbox. Rest is crap !
