We organize similar sessions as part of our comp sci degree. Not only about security and fraud but it's the one our group chose. More common scams here are call scams. Where they trick people to call back to a pay per minute number. A little understanding goes a long way for these victims.

My great grandma got a call from a scammer and she was going along with what the scammer was telling her to do for about 20 minutes. then the scammer told her to click on an icon on the screen. she told the scammer that she didn’t see the icon on her screen. The scammer was confused about why she didn’t see the icon until my great grandma said “maybe its because I don’t have a computer.” So basically my great grandma had wasted more than 20 minutes of the scammer’s time, which i think is great.

I relate. After my bike was stolen, I really wanted to get a GPS tracker and put it on cheap bikes in the same location and hunt down the thieves. But the cash investment was more than I could really justify. Would be way easier and cheaper to pull off than this though... I don't know why police don't just always have like 50 bait bikes around town waiting to get stolen.

@@catinthehat5140 They wouldn't. But scammers target people who are easily overwhelmed and confused. Often it's older people who are starting to suffer from senility, or who are having emotional problems. I loved my grandma, and she was very intelligent in her day. But near the end for her, if she didn't check with my dad before every financial decision, she might have fallen for something like this. She was trusting of people she thought were authority figures, and very anxious a lot of the time. They take advantage of that.

Ok, I'm normally a pretty calm and unbothered person, but the audio recording of the scammer scamming that woman litteraly made me sick. The pure manipulation and lies disgusted me completely. The problem isn't that they don't have emotions or empathy, the problem is that they're just apathetic. It's extremely easy to "press the button," so to speak, when the victim is confirmed to be on the other side of the world and have no relation to you what so ever. Some of the guys in that video could easily have been your friend online. Everybody here in the comment section could wax poetic all day and night about what we could do to deter things like this, but the cheapest thing we can do is spread awareness. Stay safe Hammies!

The scammers are keeping track and watching for obituaries for couples over 65 .. then closing in on these old ladies within a week of the funeral like bug eyed vultures feasting on the dead while they are still in mourning .. some people do deserve harsh retribution ..
