Literally just bought one of these for myself and my two boys. At 57, for me it is primarily for mobility and agility to try a new push that process back and for the boys it is to be able to practice balance and surf skills. The whole family took it up in a big way this year (what else do you do in a lockdown?). A primer series on how to start and progress on one of these would be a great follow up. Great filming BTW, and great length of film.

I bought one 2 weeks ago, cannot disagree on : great first board, very stable even in (not too sloppy) downhill, easy to pump, can go fast. Thanks! It is nice to have a variety of boards - The last couple of months I've been hitting skateparks a lot and I made a custom board with Carver CX trucks, firmer wheels for sliding, and a light narrow deck with lots of concave to reduce weight and give lots of traction when just hanging on by the toes in an inverted bertslide. It is my new favourite because my preferred riding style evolved to be a bit more aggressive hybrid of skateboarding and surfing. My wife rarely picks any board but the Oxelo and she is a couple months behind me in progression, just starting to ride bowls etc - I still think it is a great choice for beginner and intermediate riders, especially if on a budget.

I have had this surfskate for a year now. I bought it because I can't surf in the place I'm living ATM. Previously, I used to ride a longboard surfboard, so I kinda knew how to carve with this board, since once you know how to carve with a 9' longboard you can even carve with a palm if you want hahaha. These are my impressions of it: - It's ok to learn the basics of carving. The length of the board is good for high speed stability. I've gone downhill with it with 0 complaints. - The "sandpaper" grip of the nose has a really bad quality. After a week of use it was like steping in regular wood, which was really slippery and dangerous. Same thing for the surfboard-like grip of the tail. It had 0 grip and I had to replace both of them with actual sandpaper grip to make the board usable again. -The design of the board is just dumb. Decathlon took the shape of a short surfboard and made it smaller, which is really uncomfortable, since you can't place the whole surface of your rear foot in the board. You'll always have a part of your foot outside of the board. It's specially bad when you are carving a bowl, since you can't correct the position of your feet so easily. - I broke the front truck bushing after 6 months of use. I had to replace it. - If you ride over any wet surface (even slightly wet) the grip of the wheels just dissapears, and it's really easy to fall. - The wheels should be a little bigger IMO for urban carving. Also, the grip of the stock wheels is not very good, but you can use this to learn how to slide. - I've tried the trucks in different boards and they do what they are supposed to. My conclussion is that this board is ok for starting and learning your basics, but the same board will be limiting your learning. I have to say that I picked up my surfboard after 8 months without surfing and the techniques I used with this board made me not forget how to carve on my longboard.

That is rough to have been right next to so many breaks and now so far. For me it was 8 hours before Covid... Now Maine is completely off limits due to border restrictions. Nova Scotia breaks are 15 hours away, but they have a strongly enforced 14 day isolation period, so you can round that down to 350 hours from leaving home to legally being able to surf. The transparent griptape faded after a week of use, forcing me to put a new one, because now the board feels slippery. @MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
I am about 6 ft (like 2mm less) but 6 if you count my hair! Because this board has a really low angled tail, it is near impossible to get the pop you would need to Ollie into any tricks. Hey love the review man one question can’t you just replace the nut that sticks out with a smaller one and try to grind that without hitting the coping?
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
No, I may have described it poorly, the kingpin itself is longer than the truck hanger, so the issue would be the same, though if you grind down the kingpin and then use a smaller nut it could potentially work. It should also be noted that I’ve encountered the same issue on higher end surfskate trucks like the the Carver CX also, though maybe not as obtrusively.

hey mate, in the video you mentioned the waterborne surf adapter and this Oxelo 540 Carve is a bit different but still good. After a couple of months what do you think, which one is better? Or totally different style? I am hesitating between this surfskate and ordering a waterborne surf adapter to my longboard (pintail), and after your vid I really dunno which one would be better. I am more into just cruising, i don't do tricks at all, but also surfing, so I just want to have a similar feeling like in the water. I really like my longboard so would be happy to convert that to a surfskate with the adapter but also like this Oxelo 540 shape with the grip at the back and actually almost the same price.
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question and providing the detailed background. In your case I think the Waterborne Surf and Rail adapters is the way to go. They feel great on a longboard if you have seen my waterborne review video. The rail adapter gives it the extra bit of surf feel compared to a Carver or SwellTech because it feels like you can get your entire rail on edge. The downside of the Waterborne system is the weight it adds, so it feels sluggish and clunky in a skatepark, even on a smaller board, but if you weren't planning taking it into the bowls or trying any tricks on the wedge banks, then Waterborne surf and rail adapters would probably be a better bang for your buck compared to the Oxelo,.

Really appreciate the context and detail you provided when asking. 1) Yes it is good enough to practice the surfing motions, especially if you loosen the kingpins as I suggest in part 2 of my review. 2) It isn't as surfy feeling as a Carver C7 or Yow Meraki or a waterborne - Any type that has an articulated mechanism on the front truck. If you aren't sure if you want to dive in full bore to surf skating, then this is an excellent starter board with great value to see if it something you enjoy and practice some surf motions. If you think, "this could be my new passion", you might be better off skipping ahead straight to the more premium boards on the market. Thanks for the sub! Hey there! Would you recommend this board for riding long distances? Is it stable while going downhill at medium speed? I am planning to upgrade from my little penny board to a larger one this summer. My preferencies would be stability (not to have that wobbly feeling while going downhill with my penny), comfort and the ability to do some of these surfer moves. So basically i'm looking for a board that is good for both cruising and carving. Do you think this would be a good choice? Thank you very much!:)
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
This would be a really good option. The width of the board helps and compared to other surfskates these trucks feel a little more stable. It is kind of like a snowboard, it feels super stable if you keep carving from edge to edge going down hill, if you try to just bomb a hill you will get speed wobbles though. This board can pump really fast, so it is a good option for commuting too.

So you may or may not have options. But if you do, beyond your height and weight, In general, a longer wheelbase will have a larger turn radius, so it will flow more like a longboard surfboard. Shorter wheelbase will give a snappier feel with tighter turns, but on the Oxelo it will still be fairly long so a bit more like a short board or hybrid surfboard. I would try it as it comes first and then decide if worth changing it up after some practice. Hope that helps!

hey, I'm thinking of getting this board, but would it be okay if I changed the wheels? something like the Carver concave 69mm. also, would it be okay to add the Waterborne adapter on this board? GREAT VID!
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
I would try the board stock before changing anything. I like a harder wheels for sliding tricks, but for pumping these wheels are really good. This board is excellent value, but if you add on a ton of upgrades, you might just be better off buying a higher end board to start with. As for the waterborne adapter, again, I don’t think you need it. If you loosen up the kingpins, you can get a pretty good range of motion. One thing that might be cool would be adding the waterborne rail adapter on the back trucks to be able to get a bit more lean, but you’d probably need to add some risers to the front to keep the board level, and then you may need longer hardware also.
@sarasegador89983 жыл бұрын
@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer yeh I was thinking of getting a higher end board but I don't have the money for that, I was thinking of adding the upgrade on the future. But yeah I'll probably buy it and see if I like the wheels, if not I'll change them. I was thinking about just buying waterborne adapter but I would have to get a new deck and wheels etc...I have a few popsicle from street skate but the wheelbase isn't far enough. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it unless you use a reshipment company, which I haven't tried and which would probably increase the cost, and maybe make it less of a deal compared to other brands.

@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Жыл бұрын
I used to say that, but I find that most people who get into surfskating tend to stick with it, and if so, you will outgrow this board. So if you think surfskating is something you will really enjoy, it may be best to invest in something a little higher performance that you can grow into as you progress.

How do you get this much speed out of it? Have you done anything to your bearings? Thanks.
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
These are the stock bearings, no modifications. The only thing that might contribute is that I am incredibly uptight about avoiding water and sand and gravel. My wife ran it through a puddle yesterday and I looked at her like she just dropped our baby on its head. I find that when you get the proper pumping technique going that I can get this board moving faster than my others.

@@deonpeace8175 I would say it does okay on rough terrain, but not great compared to a longboard with larger softer wheels. Another reason a little more lift in the kicktail would have helped for getting the front wheels over larger cracks.

Would you think pumping works for a lighter skater (60kg) due to it being more steady?
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
My wife is lighter than that and this is her go-to choice, and probably the board she can pump the best on. Loosening and tightening the trucks gives some flexibility in the ridigity too. You can start with it a bit tighter and loosen it as you get more comfortable.

I have been riding one for half an a year and is the worse deck y ever tried.. Lose the grip in one month..and the deck breacks between the holes becouse they are so close. To avoid the problem of the bolt on the front truck I recomend to change the bolt for a tiny one and cut the axle. Mine works fine, grinds smooth without problems!
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer3 жыл бұрын
Damn, you must be riding it hard! Appreciate your feedback, and I do think I've outgrown this board now that I am skating almost exclusively skateparks recently. Here in Canada, this complete cost $160 after tax. A set of Carver trucks alone would cost $210 - $240 here. Is it a $400 Carver complete? No. But is it fantastic value for $160 CDN? I stand by that and do think it is one of the best choices for a first surfskate.
