Biggest lesson i learnt in 2024 in the stock market is that nobody knows what is going to happen next, so practice some humility and follow a strategy with a long term edge.
@JeraldAlmanza3 күн бұрын
biggest thing to learn is to also know that there won't be many opportunities in the market every day, so you're not supposed to trade day by day. A good trader would understand when to enter and when to get out, but that's the hard part for people with no patience.

Recessions may seem like a scary time for investing, but historically, they can offer great buying opportunities. Stocks tend to be undervalued during a downturn, which means if you have cash on hand, you can buy quality assets at a discount
@NathalieTremblay-q4r2 ай бұрын
Agreed! Some of the best opportunities lie in companies with solid fundamentals that are temporarily affected by the overall market sentiment. Focusing on strong balance sheets, steady cash flows, and businesses with competitive advantages is crucial. These tend to bounce back well as the economy recovers
@ArthurJones-v2i2 ай бұрын
And let’s not forget about sectors that tend to perform better during recessions, like utilities, consumer staples, and healthcare. Since people need essential goods and services regardless of economic conditions, these industries often remain more stable and can provide a cushion for a portfolio.
@KatelynnCox-qb5er2 ай бұрын
Yes, and dividend-paying stocks can also be a smart move! Companies with a history of stable or growing dividends often manage their cash flow well. Plus, the dividends provide a passive income stream, which can be comforting when markets are volatile
@HectorBailey-zi7du2 ай бұрын
Another approach is to look into bonds, especially government bonds, as they tend to be safer during economic uncertainty. While interest rates might be lower, having bonds can stabilize a portfolio and reduce overall risk
@NathalieTremblay-q4r2 ай бұрын
Lastly, it’s worth considering dollar-cost averaging for buying stocks during a recession. By investing consistently over time, you can smooth out the purchase price and avoid trying to time the bottom. The key is patience; remember, the recovery phase often brings strong returns for those who stay invested

Coming out of facing alot, I knew two things about the stock market: It caused the Great Depression, and the fastest way to make a million on the markets was to start with two million. And then the Great Recession happened only a few years later. So yeah, I wish someone had better explained it to me earlier in life. Having a good entry and exit strategy will make you succeed in the stock market.

Its worse here, our economy is like a flailing fish, fighting for its life. The normal state of the U.S. economy is actually very bad. Because of this it goes into convulsive spasms fighting to grow any way it can out of desperation. Tricks, gimmicks, rule changes try to stimulate the economy and prevent it from falling but they only bring temporary relief to people since, when you factor in inflation we are declining.
@SebastianNoah5e2 ай бұрын
People believe their currency has the worth it does because they have no other option. Even in a hyperinflationary environment, individuals must continue to use their hyperinflationary currency since they likely have minimal access to other currencies or gold/silver coins.

Investing in the US stock market, particularly the S&P 500 and several exchange-traded funds (ETFs), is one way to guard against inflation. Because so many people overpaid for homes even while loan rates were low, I believe there will be a housing catastrophe because these people are in debt. If housing costs continue to drop and, for whatever reason, they can no longer afford the property and it goes into foreclosure, they have no equity since, even if they try to sell, they will not make any money. I believe that many individuals will experience this, especially given the impending mass layoffs and rapidly rising living expenses.

@carroux40502 ай бұрын
How is your opinion on low margin loans for buying dips/crashes? If you hold money in a savings account you miss potential high returns. Since you never know when the market crashes isnt it best to be full invested and if the market crashes (lets say: at least 15%) to take margin? I would consider it to a certain degree (max 30% of the current portfolio value). e.g: -Market is down 15% -> invest 10,0% of current portfolio value with a margin loan) -Markets keep dropping (now 30% drawdown) -> invest another 10%. Market keeps dropping (ow 45% Drawdown) -> invest the last batch of 10% That should give you quite some security regarding potential margin calls. Of course a 1920s crash would wipe out your portfolio. But then on the other hand... even unleveraged your portfolio value would be basically 0 😀

America is currently plagued by the hydra-headed evil duo of inflation and recession. The worst part about this recession is that consumers are racking up credit card debt. The phase that can yield your highest return is right on the tip of the euphoria phase. I love the advice to slowly build cash on high yield account when the euphoria might take over the market and offer you shares at unreasonable prices. If you avoid the crash with your safe position and enter when the fear it reigning, there is where you have an asymmetrical return for the risk incurred. The worst case scenario is already priced in so you stand to lose very little, however the companies will slowly recover and that’s when you can have multiples on your investment

I then sold out to cash and waited for the bottom and recovery knowing I would buy back in on the upswing. Barring the actual dip when my selling decision looked sensible I have never been able to catch up with the funds I sold. I have measured that loss and it stands at an irrecoverable 10%. Next time I will sit on my hands. I measured my average funds dropped at between 15-25%. I was fortunate it is a paper loss as I had bought before the peak and wasn,t losing when I sold but it showed me despite having a great interest and trying to do things right I made a 10 % mistake. Later as things began to get better I stuck to it and missed out on the rise back. Meanwhile a friend I'd helped setup an account for didn't budge and came out better for it. I lost a pretty good chunk of money that's taken until now to nearly recover - lesson learned! Meanwhile in my personal stocks I saw the dip\crash starting when COVID hit and sold many things to cash, when the bottom hit and began to come back I paid attention and bought back in to things I hoped would do well - most of them did. It wasn't piles of money but by % comparison I came out way ahead. I hope to not have to go through that again though!

People believe their currency has the worth it does because they have no other option. Even in a hyper-inflationary environment, individuals must continue to use their hyper inflationary currency since they likely have minimal access to other currencies or gold/silver coins.
@peggytaylor-v3e23 күн бұрын
Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. Investing in stocks is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire.

I started buying individual stocks when COVID hit around March 2020 and I made 20% in the last 4 years from it plus dividends. I remember a coworker panicking when COVID became a reality in March 2020. He was in his 70’s and worried about his investments since he was retiring soon. I told him he ought to sell before it goes away in his case not knowing how long it would take to rebound and that 5 years out before retirement should be in a mostly cash/safe investment position. His situation was different than mine. He went ahead and did that and saed a good deal of blood loss as he didn’t realize he could hold his retirement in cash as well. Anyway, I told him NOW is the time to buy - all stocks are going on sale. Big time sales and that ended up being true.
