What are the best microphones? Especially for KZbin and all those videos you are making. Maybe its time to graduate from that little Rode stuck on top of your camera. What are the best lav mics, shotgun mics, under-clothing mics and even headset microphones? Find out what the pros use and also what some very affordable alternatives are. Be aware that some mics require power, especially XLR mics. Some sound great but require adapters, like 1/8" 3.5mm TRS, 3 pin Lemo, TA5F, XLR, Shure, etc. Hear the comparisons between Shure, Audio-Technica, Sennheiser, Sanken, Rode, Countryman, Body Mics, Voice technologies and more. This video is one of many in an audio masterclass series. Enjoy!
Here are links to sound files you can download to hear the differences...

It's important to note that the AT4053B is not in fact a shotgun microphone, but is a 'pencil condenser' indoor dialogue microphone. This type of mic generally works better indoors than an actual shotgun mic.
@ToddLloyd
@ToddLloyd 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. People should know that a shotgun mic does not sound good indoors because of the way sound bounces off walls.

The 4053b is my primary go-to. I've used it indoors and outside, on vocals and instruments. My favorite utility knife mic. And yeah, it's a pencil. I swapped to this from an NTG 3 shotgun because I recorded more indoors than outside.

This reminded me so much of going to the NAB convention each year...I would always head over to the radio/audio section and go right to the Countryman booth where Carl Countryman would be standing there behind the counter at the controls of a mixing console. On the countertop were dozens of microphones and he would place headphones on my head and start talking into each microphone one at a time. They were all connected to his mixer and he made quite a show of it. Those were good times. Thanks Markus for your incredible demo.

The new standard in Mic shootouts. I've done tests of up to about 10 mics in a session at a time, but this is many levels up. Not only doing the raw mic but also comparing with post processing added, which as you can hear with cheap mics starting to "reveal the limitations" as you process the audio is a big part of a proper evaluation which is rarely included. Epic content creation!! Even with my interest in the subject, I'm not sure anyone else could have held my attention or made the presentation of all of this as enjoyable.

I do quite a bit of music-recording, and often the mics are a lot further away then. This is when you really start noticing the price-differences, these are almost always condensermics in a stand. but most of us do speech, so this will not be a real issue...

Thanks for this Markus! Those 39 minutes went by in a blink of an eye. I've been to the Schoeps factory with my audio class at university in Germany. Was a great experience to see how these high end mics are made and what the people making them had to say about it. All down to earth, friendly. A bit unreal seeing like 50 of these high end mics stacked up next to each other though.

I have to say big applause for your deep comparison between all these mics. I never saw anyone in youtube doing this huge amount of different microphones in one video for us to hear their subtleties. Appreciate very much your editing after time:35min 33 seconds at the end of it. That summarized very well their capabilities. Well done, I usually don't comment but here I felt I needed to be grateful for you huge efforts. ❤ all your videos and I am following you since the very beginning of your KZbin on this channel. I've been a Sennheiser guy for decades and always wanted to hear the high-end DPA and of course they mythical Schoeps tested side-by-side. Looks like I made a good choice. this is absolutely tremendously useful. Thank you so much for this information. I bought a MKH416 and I honestly haven't used it as much as I thought that I would. Your gear collection is truly epic and good audio is so important, but as a listener its one of those things where its either really bad and you notice it, or its good and you don't even notice it. Sound is almost something unconscious, and its hard to tell audio when its been edited really well. Edited video on the other hand is incredibly obvious. Thank you for this Markus!

The DPA is a superb microphone. So good, I recommended it to a concertmaster violinist as his one and only microphone purchase, both for performing and recording as needed. I have never found any other microphone that I thought could cover those two completely different scenarios. I’ve used them mounted on all the concert stringed instruments and also as an overhead on a boom arm with excellent results all around. As a bonus, they are not what I would call by any means a delicate microphone.

I appreciate you always give options and especially show affordable options for low-budget filmmakers like yours truly. I was surprised you didn't mention the Rode lav mic - it's a solid, not outstanding mic, but I like that the mic capsule can be unscrewed from the cord for adapting to multiple devices and easily replacing the cord if it gets damaged.

I love how the DPA 4060 sounds! They are hard to come by here in Australia. I use the Rode VideoMicro for my videos but I need to invest in a good Pop Filter for my voiceovers. I definitely need to invest in a lav mic for field work because the biggest feedback I receive from my videos is the voice clarity in noisey environments, like at a market or in a restaurant. I do what I can in post production but it’s still lacking quality.

Wow, great presentation of each of the mics, including post processing. I had a Fethead Phantom that I tried with my Sennheiser ME66 + K6P and MKH 416 and I tried this with a Tascam DR-100 MKII and Tascam DR-701D XLR and could not get a sound when using the Fethead with the mics on either recorders. I was using the ME-66 for background ambient and nature sound recording as it has great low noise and high sensitivity and works great for that, especially when using a pair for stereo sound, but I liked the frequency response and sound of the MKH-416 more but I noticed if I recorded in the same locations as the ME-66, I'd notice more noise hiss on the recordings due to slightly higher noise floor of the MKH-416, so I thought the Fethead Phantom would fix that, but I didn't get any sound when using it.

I had forgotten the video was even playing after hearing the few I wanted to hear, but when you started talking through the CMT5U, I stopped everything I was doing to figure out why it suddenly sounded like thre was a person talking to me IRL, except that I knew it wasn't a person in the room with me, because it sounded like they were close enough to lick my eyeball.. When you started whispering? I had to stop the video. It was making the hair in my ears vibrate in a way that introduced a level of discomfort that I've never experienced before. That thing is absolutely insane.. in a good way ... mostly ...

This is the best mic review video I’ve ever seen. I know this is from a year ago, but I bet it’s all still spot-on. Thank you so much. I’d also be interested in your post-processing workflow.

Wow! Your video is fantastic! You deserve major props for all the effort you put into planning, filming, editing, and wrapping it all up with that awesome recap. Most people don't realize how much goes into making something like this happen. Kudos, Markus! Coming from a background in cinematography and production, I totally get why the top location audio recordists we hire invest in high-quality gear like DPA mics. We make do with a decent Lectro/Sound Devices ENG Kit for smaller gigs, but after listening here, it's clear our Countryman EMC and Tram TR50 lavs could be better with proper processing. Even though our trusty old ME66 shotgun has served us well, it might be time to retire it. I'm curious about your processing techniques. Did you use the same plugins or outboard gear for each mic, but with different settings? And what is your vocal chain? Do you have presets set up for each mic/plugin combo? I'm also intrigued by the idea of using a lav headset for podcasting instead of my SM7B. But I noticed those headset lavs can pick up a lot of breath sounds. Did you manage to clean those up in post-processing? Lastly, do you think any of those headset lavs could be suitable for both dialog and singing? Thanks again for sharing such an informative video packed with useful insights! I salute you!

It's just one thing wich really make me listen to you at all and that is that you don't like bullshit talks and that it's important to use your gears in the right way. Still you admit that it excist differenses in between cheap and expencive "gears" . You give a better confidens to people for what they own. Great, I like it !

Wow! Thank you for this video! The more I watch from you, the more I realize that you really do have the best Videogear related KZbin Channel! I would also appreciate it if you could show us how to professinoally post process a Lav Mic or give us a link to a good tutorial. I was pretty blown away by how good most of the mics sound after post processing
