So much work put into these videos, these have to be the most comprehensive videos on audio gear and recording that exist. One thing I've really learned from your videos is that better gear may sound dull and lackluster, much like shooting RAW photos with my camera but what you can do with that file is so important. I've mistakenly thought microphones sounded good or bad just based on EQ parameters. Looking forward to a video on how you post process your voice if you do one. Thanks for putting these out, a fantastic series.

@@labamba3011 Not sure what you mean by that time has passed. Styles are cyclic, in fact vinyl is outselling CDs right now and old Pioneer receivers from the 70's are selling for thousands on Ebay. Sure the "processed" audio is over the top but did you ever think for demonstration purposes that was his intention? I'm thankful for the audio series, after all it's FREE for the taking or passing and I've picked up a lot of details I have not found in dozens of videos I've watched. Markus has always encouraged doing your own thing in his videos, I seriously doubt he'll present a video on post processing audio that shows his way as the only way.

I was sooo curious to see DJI lav mics tested along a plethora of wireless systems, as you do in your vids. Will you do a short video on it when you'll get yours? Thanks & chears!

I made it a goal to build a minimalist rig for 2022. I've used Sony and Sennhizers as well but settled into the Rode Go ii for my main system for the following reasons; Battery life, dual lav and I plug the extra lav into the sennheizer MKE200 for backup audio additionally the transmitters do record onboard audio for backup as well. I found a battery charging system that charges all three at once. My other savings from the Rode Go II come from not having to buy batteries andy more. I still have a habit of throwing batteries throwing in my cart when I go shopping. I appreciate your review of affordable options, thank you!

@@MarkusPix It's how to stay young.. We're similar ages.. Met a guy 34 years ago had a nice sense of humour and was in his 70s and said similar and also "old people too serious, it's what makes them old." Thanks again for this masterclass series.. Some thoughts for you.. I have 2 H1 Zooms and a DR-05.. I've been working it out.. the H1 needs you to use your nail to use the buttons and the sliding switch plastic bit breaks after about 1,200 on/offs then I use a cocktail stick to switch it on and hold.. and you can't buy the plastic bit.. thus I bought another secondhand and that broke last week.. The DR-05 (bought new 2012) has a few tricks you can do.. I consider it a recording studio.. (40 years ago a friend had a TEAC reel to reel, same makers) you can power mics, split/delete edit, lots of quality etc and effect's settings, you can get level setting in auto and switch that setting to manual, tone sound and the most useful a tuning function.. ie for a guitar etc.. there's other things.. and the buttons are easy to use and haven't gone wrong in 10 years.. and everyone forgets about the hold button when they first have one, which you switch to hold when off so you don't accidentally switch it on. Can you do something about pop filters? DIY? .. and an audio recording in your sports car and reducing the engine noise.. I used the stereo with one mic on the driver and one mic in the back near the engine then used the engine recording to help cancel out the background from the driver.. this was 1996 with a Sony Walkman.. ... and some YT have had the rode go wrong.. Regards Mark..

Thanks Markus, I really appreciate your insights and info which is really helpful to a newbie like me. I back ordered a DJI mic system some 2 months ago, but have been doing a lot more research since and I'm starting to like the idea of going for separate recording with sync in post. I'm still researching kit, but increasingly taken with the idea of the compact simplicity of a Tentacle sync Track-e which can both handle 32bit float and has the capacity via small sync modules to extend and add time code for potential future multiple camera shoots. Clearly I need to 'walk first, before trying to run'. But the Tentacle system does look like an interesting upward expansion path when experience and budget permit. Also I note the DJI that I'm hopefully getting soon can also act like a tiny body pack recorder too, if not bothering to use radio transmission. I'm also liking the idea of high quality XLR shotgun mikes too. I observed an outside BBC broadcast unit (here in UK) using a Sennheiser MKH 416 with just a deadcat (no blimp even) in high wind last week. I figure if they choose that in challenging conditions then I could do a lot worse. I already knew the 416 is an expensive classic, but I'm thinking eventually something like that with a HQ field recorder (perhaps something like a Sound Devices MixPre 6-ii) would be a good place to head towards, if I start to take this sound thing more seriously. However all that's for the future. I know I still have a lot to learn about video, storytelling production and editing as I take my extensive stills photo experience and try to graft on a basic understanding of video production. Buying a Sony a7iv recently is my impetus to start on incorporating video and sound into my skill set. Hopefully fun and eventually something I can use to make interesting shorts. Would love to incorporate time lapse travel stuff too. But as a currently one man band there are limits with what one can handle practically both in terms of operation and carrying.

Wireless mics are a must for live event video and theatre recording, not vlogging. Also, capturing audio with the video in camera saves a few editing steps. Wireless is also the only way to get a dynamic, not omni, mic into the hands of the talent to effectively isolate the talent from the room, and any PA system. So, the holy grail of wireless is a dynamic lavalier mic, with an excellent limiter function for level control, connected to as foolproof a radio function possible for low noise, low distortion, great frequency response, all with no time latency. I use A-T System 10 with a cardioid lavalier mic , and Rode Wireless Go with internal mic. Thanks for the videos.

I got one of those ancient AT Pro 88. systems for free. It actually sounds pretty good. The mic that came with mine is a Tram style. One interesting thing about that particular system is it operates way down in the VHF band as opposed to most current mics that are in the UHF band or 2.5Gz band. Although you only get a choice of 2 frequencies it might be a less crowded white space. I bet several of your older mics are now illegal to use since recent FCC changes. Buyers of used wireless equipment beware! I laughed out loud with delight when I saw your awesome table full of wireless mics! And I thought my habit is bad!

This series is so dang good. I had to actually stop at "Ford Fiesta" and take a break for laughter. Here’s a question that is surely beneath you (which hopefully makes it intriguing): I’ve gotta go wireless to remove entanglements in my sewing videos. What wireless system or non-wired setup would you recommended for us KZbinrs shooting on an IPhone pro max 😬? I caved and got the Rode duo wireless go setup, and after doing everything the Rode rep recommended and sinking over 500 bucks for all the extras (new rode lavs, proper cables, eye of newt), I’ve had so many issues with it I WANT TO SET FIRE TO IT. I’m wondering if this system doesn’t play as well with an iPhone as it proclaims, but maybe that’s true of many units? Thanks for dropping constant knowledge, Santa! I mean Markus!

Sewing machines can cause frequency interference. Do you really need wireless? Why not have a little recorder in your pocket and then sync it up with the video when editing. Its easy, takes 30 seconds. I made a video about that
@handmadeharriells
@handmadeharriells 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkusPix I’m sorry I need a minute to digest that…..*sewing machines* can cause interference?! MIND BLOWN. I use wireless because there’s so much movement involved with sewing videos- cutting on the floor, draping, handling yards of fabric-an extra cord really gets underfoot quick. But I did ogle your pocket recorder video this morning. I had to use the backup on-board recording on my rode last week when the signal dropped (it was just a talking head video, no machine). It was a bit of a PITA matching it up and deleting dead air using LumaFusion, but you do make it sound so much more sensible than wireless! Sewing people have a similar toy problem, we like toys. This could get bad quick. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge Markus, I’m excited for the next courses 🤓

I agree. Funny- it seems my best experiences and results are from the ones that seem like empty plastic boxes (like the Rodelink Filmmaker) and I never use the ones that are made of metal and feel like they're filled with lead.

@@MarkusPix did you ever have problems with their wimpy little mike cables allowing the incursion of data noise (for lack of a better description)? I've battled that since I bought my three systems.

Totally agree with you of the quality of sound in the mini lav recorders verses the fickle wireless signal. I sometimes go with a dual setup with two lav mics - one going to a wireless transmitter and the other going to a portable recorder - why you ask. The wireless gives me at best useable audio and at worst good scratch audio to synch the clean recorder audio to. I just use this when the shotgun on the camera can't pickup decent scratch audio by itself to synch to - I'm still using the Sennheiser G3 system - decent

Hi Markus I love your channel and just watched your backstory. Amazing guy! I'm going to check out your raw diet book. Where can I get hold of it please? Also, does the Sennheiser AVX's 21ms delay both you as it's about half a frame? Do you end up nudging it on the timeline or just leave it and the lips aren't out of sync? Also, what is the very best lavalier that you recommend that's compatible with it?

Markus, I have yet to see you do a video that I didn't love. Shove over Kara, I love this guy. OK Kara, you can stay cuz I really love you too. I love your affection for old classics. I also use the the old Audio-Technica wireless but you left out my other classic which is the Sennheiser Evolution 100 which not only has a transmitter for a laugh but a different transmitter for an XLR mic. Not quite your old Ferrari. More like a classic old Volvo. I would love to see a video just focusing on this new plethora of really small cheap mics. Synco alone a half dozen different versions up to the G3 which are all well under $200. The choices are perplexing. And I believe in your mantra that sound quality matters. But I think these mics are really so small and easy to use that there is a run and gun, in-n-out, fast fast fast ability with these little guys that you just can't get from the audio-technica. By the way I've used these mites for ambient sound. I use the audio Technica many times and I would put it on a tennis court with the permission of the tournament and I would shoot at a distance with my ENG video camera. The sound quality was perfectly fine to pick up the striking of the ball and the squeaking of the tennis shoes on the court. Bless you and Kara. I've learned so much from you, been so entertained and... Ya just make me smile!

DJI MIc > that other stuff. I've been using it a month, so easy, great quality, never going back to the wires or other systems. I gave away my Hollyland.

Should also mention the newer Rode Go 2 that also doubles as a recorder so you have that backup as does the new DJI wireless system which also comes in a cool charging case... I think you'd like the DJI one because it's pretty neat. When using wireless for weddings/events many times you are over 20' to the groom so have clear long distance audio is preferable. It also helps to ensure you won't have dropouts at medium distances or in challenging situations. That's why the distance test matters.

The distance testing thing with wireless is useful for those occasional shots where say, the wife is in the shop across the road and you’re videoing her coming out with audio. Often, a car comes across (very quickly) and that’s when the sound can drop out. Better systems don’t drop the audio in that kind of situation. So it’s also to do I guess with the strength of the signal.

I like the Pro 88. It seems like it might be analog so the latency might not be an issue. I am thinking about using it as a reference/sync track. Pairing it with the Tascam X8 might be cool. Thanks! Your videos are super helpful. Your upcoming lav placement video is desperately needed.

Its great, just be aware it has no threaded locking mic input so dont dance and do cartwheels

I just want to clarify, I'm considering the X8 as the primary recorder & the Pro 88 to send audio to the camera.
