This is exactly the video I’m looking for. I’ve been wanting to have a rainforest room for a while now and this is the exact tree I plan on designing for my room. Thanks for making it into a reality.

This is the catch of DIY. You know were you messed up and you will always be able to spot it. Often no one else can. If someone had made the item for you and made the exact same mistakes you'd likely not be able to see them either. The curse of knowing.

A long time ago, I visited a museum with a walkthrough forest. I thought it was incredibly cool, and wondered what it would be like to create a forest in a basement, where you could escape anytime you wanted to. The way you made the tree is exactly what I would need! Now that I have kids, this seems like a justifiable thing to do. 🙂

This is very insightful. I come from a CG/VFX background and there was never this type of approach in any of the art programs in my country, so this is all rather fascinating to me. The only local industries that make some attempt at special set creations are the TV networks, but they're so lazy looking that it quickly tunes you out of their shows. My mind never computes the idea that props can be hollow. Whenever I think of making something, I immediately think of thick, solid materials. Paint is another thing. I'm so used to using photographic textures for 3D that my firs thought is usually printing something and try to shoot it in a way nobody will notice XD

Great how-to video, Markus. At the science museum, when they want a big tree trunk they go get one. Your tree looks better than their real ones. We do make smaller stuff, like your rocks and even much bigger ones, but much larger is usually done with foam insulation planks glued together and then carved with the right angle grinder with the round plate and 4 bolts sticking out of it. It carves the foam rough and very quickly, but it is quite dangerous. I think I prefer your way of making a tree or other things using just foam core and then covering it, and I will try to get them to build more things your way. I'll be watching this video several more times to be certain that I haven't missed anything and will likely show it to them as well. I never thought of using Water Putty for this, but have used it in home renovation for the last 50 years or so. This is also a great idea. Many thanks for the demonstration.

Nice job. I built an 8 foot tall tree for a theatre project. In my case, because of limited budget, built it with a sonotube wrapped with discarded carpet. I sculpted the carpet and then applied Ardex Feather Finish quick dry floor filler to complete the bark look. After each performance audience members would ask me how I got that huge tree trunk into the building...loved it! And I love your videos!

Fascinating, really thanks for showing this stuff, sort of reminding me of my great first year of art school and the moments that made me want to go there, ,not the final 3 years where it was kinda horrible and stifling if I'm honest. not heard of water paste filler before, and seeing expanding foam used for something other than bodging up a hole in a building gives me hope. Keep playing my friend.
