I'm not gonna lie... I thought the same thing, even though I always try to fight the 'book by it's cover' syndrome! But no, Markus is funny as hell, and I love his advice/tutorials plus his diy ethic. Dood has more than enough money to buy whatever he needs to solve any problem he may encounter - yet he still tries to come up with his own solutions!?! His vid on ultra cheap camcorders are what sold me. He had me crackin' up the whole way through! Thanks Markus, and if you ever need to hire an assistant, just let me know!!!

I enjoyed this thanks for the crash course on tracks. You hit the nail on the head. Use what you have laying around! I spent the first half of my life in pro audio and have a story you may enjoy. Before the days of audio mixers with volume faders, they would use ropes to control the level of sound hitting the recording medium. Microphones would hang from the ceiling on ropes in the "live room" and in the control room, you could adjust the distance of the microphone to the sound by adjusting the length of the rope moving the microphone closer or further from the control room wall. Quite amazing. Honestly, it is something to think about because in a very purist way this would result in the cleanest possible signal. No resistors, capacitor, no circuit to go through nothing. Just one pre-amp. Low tech high fidelity :)

Hey Markus! I thought that I could make a simple slider from OpenBuilds V-Slot profiles ... they are quite stiff and the V-rollers guide the carts very precisely. I used them to build a laser plotter and it turns out that you can get good accuracy and smoothness of movement with them.

Enjoyed this very much. One thing you didn't mention is noise. Some of the tracks seemed to create a lot of friction noise. Even if you re using a remote microphone, I would be concerned that the mic would pick up this background noise. Any suggestions for eliminating noise from the slider?

On set I've seen so many "shitty rigs" that, now, I don't laugh anymore when someone tells me "Relax... the thing looks crap, but it really works just fine.". What matters, you've said so : the result. If you can reach it, it was THE idea to have. Period. And your ideas are simple, they function, so they're perfect... bravo !

Yes!!! I’ve been using a slider built from a pocket door rail. I hang my iPhone upside down to try to avoid getting the slider in the shot, plus get rid of multiple stands by hanging off trees, fences, etc. But the problem is finding a way to get it to move on its own in a controlled manner… the idea of using a string (that you talked about!!) did occur to me but I’ve been very stumped about which motor to use so thanks for mentioning the microwave motors. I’m going to see if I can get them to run on battery for outdoor shoots. It just seems like the biggest hurdle is finding a *quiet* battery powered motor. If you have any ideas I would love to hear your input.

Getting some laughs while catching some pointers. - We have 240V where I live, and yep, Microwave turntable motors are at full voltage. "Make Sure you insulate it well." - none of the "Don't try this at home folks." Glued Magnets on the Light stand bracket are a little more adaptable than gluing the motor directly. Cool Use of "Simple" stuff.. (Thumbs up for the Use of a fan as a drum winder. )

You can find parts used to build 3D printers or CNC routers and build very nice sliders. IMHO, the problem is making it move smoothly like the the counterweight one did. That one with the parallax is very clever!!!

Quicky set-up: Broom handle. Couple friends shoulders. Clean up easy: magic wand, and broom flies away. Moving a camera across a desk, simple solution is a folded wash cloth under it. No bumps, nothing. Shoot wide. It's more fun when you don't have the dough to come with solutions. A lot more. Night shot of an alley, no light except a street lamp at the far end of it? You want your character to walk from the distance toward you. Shoot a plate of the alley. No noise there. Then film the scene, knowing you're going to get noise in areas just above the blacks. (the olden days, with the Canon 5D MarkII pre any firmware updates) But in Photoshop you layer the plate over everything except the walker and the area he's in. If you're really sneaky, you can fade in plate areas that he just passed in another layer. No lighting at all. Here's my short noir with the cloth for the desk move and the alley shot. And, a lot more inventions, on the cheap. www.imdb.com/video/vi976727833
