Smart of Austin protecting his legacy, WWE certainly weren't going to do it at that time. They only bothered protecting the legacy of Undertaker as time went on. And as a result their roster nowadays is a who's who of who? Even Roman Reigns, while a big deal to the WWE Universe-tm, is just another guy in the big picture. WWE have forgotten how to put on an appealing wresting show, and since they are the mainstream standard bearer of wresting, it's had the knock-on effect of making wrestling as an entire medium less cool/impactful. When the guy in charge looks like the red stapler dude from Office Space, it doesn't matter how cool the other guys around him are. They're just made lesser by association. AEW is the younger cooler guy, and NJPW is a badass bruce-lee mofo... but they're still in the gaudy wrestling carnival big-top that smells of farts and despair thanks to WWE's mismanagement of the entire industry. >__>

From what I read, that's a rumor. Coachman said last year that Austin just didn't show up. Coach was going to receive a stunner then have a dress put on. So it sounds like Austin just didn't want to wrestle Coachman.

I met coach after a house show in Wichita, KS (where he’s from). He’s actually the most down to earth and kind wrestling personality I’ve ever encountered. He stayed behind for almost two hours while the other guys snuck out the back, signing autographs and conversing with everyone which he seemed to genuinely enjoy. He’s a class act and a real one

Looking back, he actually looked pretty good as far as build, wasn't bad talking, and could have been trained to be a midcard guy. One thing I always liked about Coach is away from WWE he had a charisma to him that sometimes doesn't translate to wrestling, but seeing him in his projects away from wrestling was pretty cool.

Coach wasn’t one of my favorites or anything but one of my favorites memories as a kid is of him. My 1st ever WWE live event I was a major mark so my mom took me. It was while Batista was fighting HHH for the championship while Evolution was breaking up. It was a house show so no cameras and Coach was the announcer and he would talk when they were stalling I guess. Well I yelled out “Coach is a jackass” since I wasn’t allowed to cuss this was all I was allowed to yell to him and he looked at me pointed right at me and told me “You shut the hell up” I was 9 or 10 so I thought it was the coolest thing ever I’ll never forget it. Also Torrie Wilson flashed us so that was also amazing hahaha

2003 RAW tag team and intercontinental scene was phenomenal. RVD & Kane, La resistance, The dudley boyz were going at each other throughout the summer. Booker T, Christian, Jericho, RVD were putting classics after classics for intercontinental title. Coach had a brief stint managing heels such as Mark henry and a stooge for Eric.

I was already long done watching wrestling by this point but would check it out for 5-10 minutes here and there. It was jarring to see Coachman having such a prominent on-screen role as he was still just a backstage interviewer when I stopped watching. During the few times I checked out this era of WWE, I saw Coachman as having go-away heat, like literally all he did was make me want to change the channel...and that's exactly what I did.
