Alright it's a brand new episode of Was It Any Good. This is of course the show where we watch back at entire wrestling storyline with the end goal of finding out if it was any good. Sometimes in wrestling history can write a narrative that isn't actually right and these things need to be revisited to check. Rikishi stopped doing too cool in 2000 WWF and he was now the Badman who ran over stone cold steve Austin!

I'd say that Rikishi's initial motive made more sense when you consider how The Rock was doing up to Survivor Series '99; he'd only been a multi-time WWF Champion due to the Corporation constantly helping him to retain or win it back from Foley and Rock failed to get the belt back following Wrestlemania 15, so I'd say the idea that he needed help was reasonable (especially since his only decently long single title reign in 2000 started while Austin was on the shelf).

This was so, so bad. Rikishi being the driver made absolutely no sense and was a GARGANTUAN letdown after such a long and massive build up. Then you came to find out that he was under the orders of Triple H who was the real mastermind behind it which in turn lessened Rikishi's impact even further. Just awful in every way possible. He may have turned heel but never got over being a heel cause NO ONE bought that story line and he was never really the same performance wise after that. This practically killed his career.

Love the fact Mark got offended that the police got involved when Austin was about to literally mash his head into the wall " it's an anything goes match" haha. Even though I was a kid at the time I always thought Rikishi was nowhere near Austins level, which he wasn't, loved him with too col and the stinkface but nowhere near a top heel. That angle with Rikishi, Triple H and Austin was just weird in the end. But all love the Keesh, that theme song was top drawer.

I agree with Marky about that being silly; in kayfabe the cop who interfered should have been treated like those marks who try to invade the ring during matches before inevitably getting beaten up by the wrestlers being as Austin was well within his rights to smash a vehicle into Rikishi if he felt it was necessary to win (I also found it odd that Rikishi didn't appear to get arrested despite confessing to attempted murder).

That was actually a Vince call to make rikishi the driver who ran over stone cold & Bruce Prichard even tried to argue to have triple h as the driver because it made more sense. But Vince was adamant of rikishi being the driver. This storyline killed rikkishi. Rikkishi was over as hell in 2000 with too cool & the stinkface & was getting huge pops every raw & sd but once he got throw into this storyline he lost all his momentum & fans stop caring . he was never the same after that stone cold storyline. I really like Rikishi. Like you said, he always seemed to have that potential to be more, but just didn't get a good angle or something. You can blame it on bad booking or storylines, but every successful wrestler has had those and some used those disadvantages and made it into something usable. Rikishi just couldn't. He was a great in-ring talent, but I don't think if he had a personality to push him above that. If he had a mouth piece manager, maybe?

I'm sorry, but this a very stupid comment lol. Vince and Co were better at this than Russo.

@@DevilSurvivor69 they ran Austin over like a month after Russo left and their creative geniuses came up with that. Widely seen as the best year? According to who? The marks that watch for the longer fake fights and clean finishes? Because that's what they did, took away all of the amazing moments for more wrestling and goofy nerdy shit like Edge and Christian. Financially they did well but WCW wasn't competing with them like they did in the beginning of 1999, all of their metrics falled off a cliff before Russo even got there. Yeah we saw how great Vince and co were before Russo got there with their putrid TV and we saw how quickly went to shit when they stopped to ride the wave of Russo's momentum, by late Summer 2000 they were losing viewers on TV already. Then you start having garbage and attempts at doing Russo's style just in a much worse quality, rewriting the shows the day off, etc, etc. Look at how much creative dropped the ball and botched stuff after Russo left and then talk to me lmao

The irony is that while Rikishi flopped as a heel, his three sons currently in the WWE have proven that they can play heelish characters very well. You saw how the Usos were as heels, both before and during their time in the Bloodline, although Jimmy is much better in this role than Jey. Solo Sikoa, Rikishi's youngest son, definitely has a very heelish vibe to his looks, and it looks like he is being positioned in the same role as Roman Reigns when the latter was in the Shield (silent powerhouse role). So you have to wonder how differently things would have played out if Rikishi's heel turn was booked more competently than what we got.

It was super obvious to anyone watching Survivor Series '99 that Triple H was behind it all; he's the one who lured Austin to the parking lot in the first place. The only problem was that around No Mercy, Hunter was a sort-of face feuding with Angle and Benoit, and they probably felt that after all of the build up and intrigue they needed to throw a red herring in there rather than just admit that the simplest solution was the correct one. They could have revealed that H was behind it first and kept the identity of the actual driver a mystery though- that would have been a better way to handle things. Or, they could have had Rikishi accuse Rock of putting him up to it from the very beginning, and then remind us (and Foley) that Rock screwed over Mankind just oe year earlier at SS '98, and smashed a handcuffed Mankind with a chair 11 times in front of his family at Rumble ''99, and reminding us all that at one time yeah was Rock was FULLY capable of orchestrating a hit-and-run. And yeh, Rikishi could have benefitted from more wins and being smarter and stronger in general, maybe even turn Too Cool heels and become his lackeys since they ended up suffering from this plot anyway. It's a bad angle from the start; but, there were ways to execute it better.

They had a nice thing going but SCSA returning meant they had to use him (which I'm not having a go at, guy still gets the loudest pops 20 years later). This plot sucked. The Austin feuds sucked. Rikishi went from being almost a main event babyface to a midcard feeling heel, subservient to HHH. The HHH Austin match was such a let down. The 6 man Hell in a Cell never tickled me. This could have worked if it had been kept simple. Rikishi could have done it because he was sick of wrestlers like Austin and Rock attacking McMahon and other Authority Figures, breaking the rules, yet still getting title shots and main event status whereas guys like him who followed the rules were never rewarded. He could conjure an army of jaded wrestlers who felt held down against those who manipulated the system and could'vebeen an actual war with 2 sides ... a better version of New Blood vs Millionaire's Club. Those are who Rikishi could have done it for.

This is a decent idea, that would have at least meant he was a heel challenging Austin on his own level, not just "doing it for the Rock" and later doing it for Triple H, both just made him look like a mid-carder getting involved in top-card stuff he didn't belong in.

Juvenile was really popular in the late 90's-mid 2000's. Bad Man is a banger. But heel Rikishi flopped 4:42

Rikishi could’ve been a killer as a heel, easily a great upper mid-carder or main eventer if booked rightly Instead he’s punked out by The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin and made into a Rock ass-kisser 🙁🙁🙁 Let’s see if I understand Stone Cold getting run over Rikishi admitted to it, doing it for The Rock Then Rikishi said The Rock told him to do it Then Triple H told Rikishi to do it 🙁🙁🙁 Poorly booked, frequent losses against main eventers and poor storylines 🙁🙁🙁

The RIkishi turn could have worked if he then became a legit tough heel. He got his ass beat by Stone Cold right away and that killed any momentum.

The minute Triple H revealed himself to have orchestrated taking out Austin signified the end of Rikishi as a legitimate threat as he plays second fiddle to an upper-carder. But you had a point where Rikishi running over Austin for The Rock was also playing second fiddle to an upper carder and a champion at that.

Im glad this guy got it right over Rikishi. It is hard to take a heel seriously when they are a grown man wearing a thong. Even though I never hated Rikishi, but he was still a guy in a thong. Even though the rest of the internet want Rikishi to be in the bloodline, Im opposed to it. Jimmy, Jay....say what you will, but my dad didn't walk around like that and my dad didn't rub his ass into peoples faces. Enough said.

I like how people talk mad shit about my boy Hunter burying people, when this angle was the beginning of 2 years of Stone Cold burying absolutely everybody in service of his own ego. What ended it? Him taking his ball and going home because he refused to put over Brock Lesnar, who is now legit one of the greatest of all time. That being said, Austin was often times more entertaining about it than HHH. (Scott hall comes to mind)
