Marlene is a Cetra? | FINAL FANTASY VII / ADVENT CHILDREN STORY THEORY

With the remake going even deeper into the dev abyss, allow Peasant to tide you over with another Final Fantasy VII AND Advent Children story theory. Rare have I included the AC movie so heavily into a video but today we are going to answer the bizzare question. Is Marlene Wallace a Cetra? Totally ridiculous on face value but give the video a chance and it might just open up your eyes on everything from: Aerith (or Aeris heathens) role in the FFVII compilation. Jenova & Sephiroth. The ending of both movie on the game. Possible new FFVIIR story avenues. The meaning behind the ending cinematic & cool symbolic references being used in infamous scenes like the Tifa Vs Loz fight.

It's hereditary, but I think Marlene got it from Dyne. When confronted in the Corel Prison, Dyne states he was able to hear his dead wife from the Lifestream, which is apparently only a Cetra skill (Aeris describes hearing the voice of her mother from the Lifestream when she was a child). It wouldn't make a lot of sense for Aeris to be the last Cetra ever, just the last Cetra that ShinRa knows about. Remember, ShinRa isn't exactly an expert when it comes to Ancients; they thought Jenova was one at first, and it's possible Ifalna was willing to let them believe it if it meant protecting the last of her people. Unless Ifalna was super inbred, or her parents, grandparents, great-grand parents (etc.) all only had exactly one child each, there are probably multiple branches in the family tree in just Aeris' extended family. I think the Cetra are a dying race for sure, but their bloodlines are probably also scattered and thinning around among the population through cross-breeding, too. Even if Dyne is only part-Cetra (like Aeris), maybe even a cousin of Aeris, he would still have some of the same abilities, and Marlene, too.

​@@lunarisu8010 That's another popular theory, since we don't know anything about Cloud's dad or what happened to him, and he could have been a Cetra hunted down by ShinRa or he disappeared to protect his family. Others suggest it's because Cloud had been mako-poisoned (twice), and had been through the Lifestream (twice), which brought him closer to the Planet. Maybe the Remake will address this in the future installments. It would be a cool reveal!

I don't know about their orgininal intentions, but Remake's Marlene is Cetra. They were laying it on pretty thick. If she isn't, I'd be shocked. Like, when she hears/senses Barret at the end (through the flower) and how she talks about people "returning to the planet" like little Aerith did. And that scene where she senses something from Aerith a Aerith tells he to keep it a secret and, later, when Marlene is about to tell Barret something about Aerith but stops herself. I think in those two sense Marlene sensed a familiarity in Aerith and vise versa, which is why Aerith told Marlene to not say anything (she wants people to keep believe she's the last Cetra to protect Marlene). It would also explain why Marlene emulates Aerith after that. Also, I believe what Marlene was about to tell Barret is "That girl, she's...like me" which is followed by her telling Barret to go save Aerith. No doubt, Marlene shares a kinship with Aerith and has always seemed in tune with the Planet. My only question is whether SE will make Marlene being a Cetra explicit.

​@jacobturner8965 Oh, something happened there. In Remake anyway, I don't think we saw Aerith reach Marlene in the original. There's also a somewhat creepy scene in Rebirth where Marline tells the other universe Zack about Aerith's death. Now I don't know about this theory and I don't know about all of these arguments but they are doing something with her, in the new version at least. And when I say I'm unsure of the arguments for this theory I mean very unsure, but it's one of the possibilities being pointed to.

After playing FF7 Remake, I came up with a similar theory - and found this video after googling it... In Ch.3 Marlene asks if the people from the Sector 8 reactor explosion "went back to the planet", which is exactly what Aerith used to say as a child to Elmyra when someone died. Later on in Ch.12, in the train graveyard, Aerith gets a vision of Marlene for some unexplained reason - perhaps indicating that they have a link that only Cetra share. Ch.13 shows the strange connection Marlene has with Aerith as they touch. In the Epilogue, Marlene is seen getting a sort of message about her father from one of Aerith's flowers. Crazy to think you came up with this theory so long ago - props to you mate!!

That "connection" scene brought me back to this video. The way Marlene's character changes in that moment. Aerith definitely did something significant! I cannot wait to see how that gets expanded on in future episodes of the remake.

Spoilers from the remake: We don't see Marlene holding on to the white materia BUT when Aerith hugs her, there seems to be a connection or it seems as though Marlene has a spiritual "download" of sorts from Aerith. You can see it in Advent Children too. When Cloud is fighting Sephiroth, Marlene seems to get a vision from Aerith, which prompted her to say “is it her?” Also, in the beginning, Marlene seemed to have a greater insight to the Planet and Lifestream than most, even if her dad told her things about it.

I didn’t even realize people thought the Cetra were aliens. I mean, the translation was bad, but doesn’t Ifalna go more in depth of what Cetra are and even Sephiroth talks about how humans separated themselves from Cetra by settling down and taking the easy way. I pretty much just thought Cetra was more of a lifestyle and culture than a separate species. In that sense, anyone who follows the way of the Cetra has the potential to become one.

yeah, maybe aussies or brits were confused, but it was very clear to me that the centra were native humans with special powers and jenova was an alien bacteria that came from a meteor strike, but what i always wonders is whether magic meteor was used once already, where the centra used an unknown materia that strike disaster against the planet by accident and stored away the black materia at the temple of the ancients, Ilfana described in the tapes as if the centra was some kind of cult that experimented with various types of materia that got out of hand, from what she says, when jenova arrived, jenova nearly wiped the centra completely out

Two thoughts: 1) Didn't FFX-2 imply (at least a little) that Shinra (the kid genius) talks about rocket ships and using the Farplane as a source of energy, implying that his descendants might have traveled to FF7s planet and become the Shinra family/civilization (not sure what whis would say about the Cetra or Cetra/Human connection, mind you...) 2) Marline being Areith's "living legacy" makes sense. It was said in Crisis Core that Zach was Angeal's legacy, as well as Sephiroth's (due to the Mako enfusion he and Cloud underwent), and Cloud, in turn, became Zach's. However, in the case of Aerith and Sephiroth, Sephy did what a villain would - make partial clones of himself to attempt to use for reincarnation. It would make sense that Aerith would take a more "natural" approach, grooming and nurturing Marline as her legacy while gracefully remaining in the Lifestream herself. It seems like the "good guy" method of doing it, especially when the person in question is the archetype "healer girl" figure. Aerith's approach being to nurture a living person who she had a connection to rather than make clones and try to reincarnate by force - not something a nature goddess archetype would do - actually makes a heck of a lot of sense. In this way, Marline, like Cloud and Zach, is a "living legacy", not an attempt at reincarnation or living on in person. Kind of like having a child (Aerith) instead of seeking immortality selfishly (Sephiroth). The figurative dichotomy writes itself.

I love this theory! It makes the story of Advent Children/ On The Way to a Smile series all the more beautiful. The stigma only took hold of its victims in their moment of pure despair (Denzel when considering poisoning himself with a toxic rat, Rufus when trapped in the flooding cave, etc) but Aeris used this pollution of the Lifestream in inject hope & understanding into their hearts. It would also explain how Rufus could see the shade of Sephiroth in Kadaj or why all the stigma victims seemed to instictively understand that the rain was special. It might not be canon, but the theme/ethical symbology of this theory could very well be something we see in the remake!

I'm watching your FF7 remake game right now. the scene where Aerith finds Marlene support your theory. While Marlène is crying in her arms, there was like a scrambling of image and marlène moved away from Aerith. She clearly felt something. Aerith rematched him and asked him to remain silent.

It makes sense since within the "Compilation of Final Fantasy VII" canon humans are descendants of The Cetra which is a big part of why those born of JENOVA instinctively consider humans traitors as JENOVA considered The Cetra to be.Moogle Girl also showed a degree of awareness of Aerith(And funnily enough,Moogle Girl`s voice actress Andrea Bowen would go on to voice the younger Aerith in "Crisis Core").I`d like to add that The Remnants being taken into The Lifestream represents the false Cetra JENOVA reuniting with the true Cetra Aerith and Aerith adopting The Remnants through The Lifestream could be considered a spiritual ceasefire in the 2,000 Year-long war between The Cetra and JENOVA,at least for now.

Good video Pez, very interesting I really like this one! Just some things I think are stated wrong. 4:12 Erm, the music is the Main Theme of FF VII not Aerith's Theme in the scene between Cloud and Marlene. And everybody from the original party have a pink ribbon/bow somewhere on them as a tribute to Aerith. I just figured that Marlene asked for a braid like Aerith had. Also... What song is "Those who fight for the planet" ?? Pretty sure that dose not exist. The battle theme can be translated as: "Those who fight" or "The people who fight" and the Boss Theme: "Those who Fight Further", "More Fighting People" "People Fighting More/Further". And one more thing, Danzel revived a phone call in the movie and he simply replied with: "Church?... Oh, I know the one". And then the phone rang again after the battle with Sephiroth and Danzel and Marlene would run to the streets, with all the phones in town ringing and the children knowing were to go because they all had gotten that same phone call as Danzel (from Aerith supposedly) (according to Nojima at least).

Getting to hold the white materia by Aerith like she got it from her mother I do feel made the connection between Marlene and Aerith much deeper and made Aerith significant slightly like a mother figure to Marlene. Perhaps 🤷‍♀️ haha there is so much to speculate on. Love the theory Pez. I also loved the images of the planet being green and alive again, I really feel the connection to our modern day world. 🌎 ♥ going to take a walk in nature right now 🚶🏻‍♀️

Martine H Aerith is a big sister figure to Marlene.Tifa is her mother figure since she is the one who took care of and raised Marlene for years. After all Marlene herself reffers to Aerith as onee-chan in the original japanese dub.

Yeah, Aerith is to Marlene what Cloud is to Denzel (and I dare to say... Cloud is to Denzel what Zack was to Cloud). These kids look up to Aerith/Cloud as some sort of role models (though, there is a bit of Aerith within Denzel too... since Cloud believed Aerith sent the kid to him... hence feeling doubly shitty when Cloud felt he failed the kid too... Denzel happens to have a similar fighting weapon as Aerith, seen in the little anime oav about Denzel.... and his hair color also feels similar to Aerith’s).
